Koinonia Farm turns 75 in 2017! Martin England and Clarence Jordan moved to the farm in November 1942. Mabel and the England children, John, Beverly, and Florence, joined them by Christmas of the same year. Florence Jordan came in the spring of 1943 with daughter Eleanor and infant son Jim. They began this demonstration plot for the Kingdom of God and we’re still going strong.

Since 1956, the community has sold products through the mail. During the boycott against the farm in the late 50s and early 60s, the mail order business was the only way we could make a living. Throughout the years, we have added baked goods, chocolate, books, artisan partnerships, and more. Our inventory has evolved over the years and the mail order business remains our main source of income today.

In this celebratory edition, you’ll find not only our delicious food, thought-provoking books, and items from our partners, but you’ll also find a little bit of our history and a little bit about who we are today.

Make sure to read all about the Clarence Jordan Symposium and the Koinonia Family Reunion planned for March 2018 on page 19. If you are looking for the perfect gift, consider a Commemorative Brick on page 3 or a backpack for Hospitality Beyond Borders on page 4.

Just like in 1956 and every year since, all purchases or donations help us practice love through service to others: youth, visitors, immigrants, elders, those who are hungry physically and spiritually, and more. Thank you for being a part of our life and work.

Blessings!

MABEL & MARTIN ENGLAND came from the Deep South and served as missionaries to Burma before World War II. When the start of the war forced them back to the United States, Martin wrote an article about peace, justice, and community. It so inspired Clarence Jordan that he sought Martin out and a community was born. When the war ended, the Englands returned to the mission field. Although they did not remain on the farm, their legacy lives on both at Koinonia Farm and in the many places they served.

CLARENCE & FLORENCE JORDAN had just turned 30 years old when they came to co-found this experiment in Christian living. Borrowing from agricultural terminology, they called Koinonia a demonstration plot for the Kingdom of God. Clarence and Florence lived, worked, raised their children, and eventually died here on the farm. Clarence had a degree in agriculture and a doctorate in New Testament Greek and used both to shape the life and work of Koinonia Farm. After his premature death in 1969, Florence carried on the legacy until her death in 1987. She passed on her spirit of perseverance to those who continue to live and work at Koinonia today.

1. Commemorative Brick ProjectDonate a commemorative brick or several and honor a loved one, memorialize a friend, list your name, pen well wishes to Koinonia on 75 years, or be creative! Cost is $75 for 4x8 brick with up to 3 lines, 18 letters per line including spaces; $150 for an 8x8 brick with up to 6 lines, also 18 letters per line including spaces. This purchase is considered a donation and you will receive a tax-deductible receipt.

TWO WAYS TO SUPPORT THE WORK OF KOINONIA FARM

CARRYING ON THE KOINONIA LEGACY TODAY

Born in Mexico, raised in New Jersey, Sandy Thornburgh leads the Products Team. Her Spanish is still quite good, but she’ll tell you her New Jersey slang may be even better. Don’t be fooled by her quiet demeanor — she has a mischievous, fun sense of humor. Her three children are her pride and joy and were all raised here at the farm.

Kathleen Monts works to build relationships with our nearby neighbors, in Americus, and in Sumter County. She loves leading Koinonia’s Circle of Friends, a group of elders from around the county who meet regularly for all sorts of activities. She loves to fish and garden and her favorite color is purple.

2. Hospitality Beyond Borders

Hospitality Beyond Borders is Koinonia Farm’s ministry to immigrants and detainees at nearby Stewart Detention Center. If the men are deported, they are required to wear their prison jump suits on to the plane. However, if provided, they are allowed to carry a backpack with one change of clothes. Koinonia works to provide these items.

Order one or several of these backpacks. If you choose, give as gifts to loved ones or friends and we will send a card explaining the program and the importance of your gift in their honor.

Cost is $75 each and this purchase is considered a donation. You will receive a tax-deductible receipt.

Today it is Norris Harris who makes sure those hickory smoked pecans are smoked just right. He keeps the farm machinery going, the pecans growing, and our spirits humming. Norris ministers to folks on and off the farm by serving as pastor of three churches, a chaplain at Phoebe Hospital and looking after the flock on the farm.

Randy Vanderwilt is a whiz at math and sings like an angel though he’d never tell you so. He comes from a Houston, Texas ‘burb. Habitat, where he worked for twenty plus years, brought him to Americus. Now Randy joins Koinonia to keep our finances in order. He and Bren went to the same high school. The baseball and basketball bug has him rooting for the Astros and Rockets.

“ Georgia is still in the business of producing nuts. We’re still trying to get as many as possible out of the state.”

September 1960

“ Koinonians discovered that smoked pecans were good after their pecans were ‘smoked’ accidentally in a warehouse fire. They decided to smoke them on purpose after that. But now we don’t have to wait for a warehouse fire—we do it in our own smokehouse for fourteen hours over a low hickory fire, then delicately butter and salt them. They come out crisp and delicious.”

Come to Koinonia and Gloria Hurley will teach you the electric slide as well as lots of home remedies for whatever ails you. “ Because the boycott has already deprived us of three of our major sources of income—eggs, irrigated crops, and farm market—it is obvious that we must find some other means of livelihood. After thorough investigation of many possibilities, we have decided upon the processing and shelling of pecans.”

— KOINONIA NEWSLETTER #15 JULY 24, 1957

“ We think we have an original and delicious product in our smoked nuts and predict that they will be extremely popular. Our pecan dates are so beautiful this year that they make us ashamed of those we sold you last year. The chocolate chunks are a new product and while they’re real good there’s nothing particularly distinctive about them. And for the first time we are packing products in a simple but attractive tin to make a nice gift.”

— KOINONIA NEWSLETTER #34 SEPTEMBER 1966

“ Now, everything looks so sparkling and good … the plant, candy kitchen and fruit cake bakery are so clean I think you could safely eat off the floor. This year, you will get the best pecans and pecan candies and fruit cakes you ever ate. The best is getting better!”

— KOINONIA FALL NEWSLETTER #1

SEPTEMBER 1972

“ The recipe for these excellent fruitcakes was developed by Clarence Jordan back in the late fifties. Florence says that Clarence had people taste experimental fruitcake recipe A, B, C, D, … and on and on, until finally he came up with the one we use now.”

MARCH 8-10, 2018

Dear Friends,

Clarence Jordan and Koinonia Farm have inspired believers around the world who long to connect their faith in Jesus with daily life. Their radical discipleship has challenged the status quo. At the same time, it has also attracted Christians and non-Christians alike who long for the beloved community all of us were created to enjoy. When we gathered in Americus for the first Clarence Jordan Symposium in the fall of 2012, I was overjoyed to see some 400 elders come from around the country to celebrate what they learned from Clarence Jordan. I left with a deep sense that we need to call this circle of elders together again—and invite as many young people to sit with and learn from them. This desire is what compelled me to accept the invitation to chair the 2018 gathering.

Join us for the Clarence Jordan Symposium in Americus, Georgia to celebrate Clarence Jordan’s prophetic witness by plotting how to build up a new world of peace, community, and racial justice today. In addition to keynotes from leaders of today’s God Movement, the Symposium will offer trainings in nonviolent direct action, moral fusion organizing, and sustaining practices for Christian community. Follow news about the Symposium on our website www.koinoniafarm.org.

For myself and the whole Clarence Jordan Symposium team, we look forward to seeing you in March 2018. We’ll celebrate Clarence and Koinonia Farm’s 75 years. Let us all pray for another 75!

Yours in Christ,

Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove, Chair 2018 Clarence Jordan Symposium

CALLED TO COMMUNITY AND SERVICE | FOUNDED 1942

KOINONIA IS THE GREEK WORD FOR COMMUNITY OR COMMUNION. When Clarence and Florence Jordan and Martin and Mabel England founded Koinonia Farm in 1942, they envisioned it as a “demonstration plot for the Kingdom of God.” This meant living out the difficult parts of their faith: radical sharing, pacifism, and reconciliation across racial, religious, economic, social, any and all divides. They modeled their community after the early church in the Acts of the Apostles.

During the 1940s, eyebrows were raised at the pacifist beliefs of the community. During the 1950’s and 1960’s, the dedication to racial reconciliation brought persecution in the form of violence and boycotts. The mail order business came out of this time: when people nearby were boycotting the farm, friends of Koinonia across the country purchased products to keep the farm going. To this day, the mail order business is our main source of income.

As a farmer and a scholar, Clarence Jordan combined his two gifts in his work the Cotton Patch Gospel. This translation of most of the New Testament using Southern vocabulary provides a fresh perspective to the words of Jesus, Paul, and other Biblical writers. Clarence’s other writings and sermons have been published and allow new readers to discover this witty, homespun preacher.

In the late 1960s, Koinonia Partnership Housing was born. Over the next decade, the community built 192 houses in Sumter County and sold them without interest or profit. From this local ministry Habitat for Humanity was born. Koinonia members Linda and Millard Fuller, with the support of their fellow members, took the idea of partnership housing, founded Habitat, and the ministry spread around the world.

These days, our love through service to others takes on many forms. We work to further the ideas upon which we were founded in all areas of service, from visiting men at Stewart Detention Center to working for peace near and far. As a house of hospitality, we welcome guests and interns from all over the world. Every purchase you make allows us to continue this work together.

We are looking for a 27 to 32 inch church bell to hang in our bell tower. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a bell donated in this, our 75th year!
