Citizens of Georgia Power, You guys continue to shine through events, I’m amazed by the things I see submitted on Relay for Life, March of Dimes, Earth Day and your various other volunteer opportunities. Take a moment and check out all the great things happening real time on the Citizens of Georgia Power Facebook Page as well!
I’d like to take a look at another of our charities to spotlight this month continuing the theme of educating our members and peers about the assistance Citizens offers our Georgia Power family. While we would hope it’s never needed, the reality is that the assistance is needed and is provided by the Electric Kids/Colin Banks Foundation
What is it? Founded in 1991, Electric Kids/Colin Banks was designed to help the children of deceased or disabled Georgia Power OR Southern System employees based in Georgia. Colin Banks pro-vides up to $4k/year per child for 5 years of educational expenses at secondary, post-grad-uate, professional, technical and vocational schools. Electric Kids provides $4k/year per child with an annual max per family of $12k. Funds for Electric Kids can be used for things such as medical and dental insurance premiums, various school associated expenses, musical les-sons or anything that benefits the child that would have been curtailed due to the decrease in family income.
How does it work?In my experience, co-workers or family members will bring situations to the State Board’s attention. At the right time and in the right way the family is approached with all the paperwork for them to fill out. The process is completely confidential. We will not share if you are getting assistance, how much or for what purpose!
What are the requirements?Child must be the parents legal dependent, live in a household where the income is not greater than 60k/year and other income sources (savings/stocks/bonds, etc) are worth no more than 60k (home, car and GP/SC savings plan are exempt from worth)
How is it funded/How can you assist? You can help most by letting the state board know of situations that may require assistance (death of an employee, accidents on or off the job, etc). And make sure your peers are edu-cated on the assistance available!!
Electric Kids/Colin Banks are funded 100% by donations from employees via citizen’s dona-tions, fundraisers and through the Club of Hearts!

The General Office Chapter held a membership meeting to learn more about the Atlanta Mission and then they went to work. Members assembled over 150 toiletry kits for the Shepherd’s Inn, a shelter that houses up to 450 men and includes overnight shelter, recovery programs and vocational training. Shepherd’s Inn is just one of the shelters managed by the Atlanta Mission.

Kingsland ChapterThe Kingsland Citizens chapter has found a unique way to recycle plastic bags and also aid the homeless in their community. The chapter uses plastic bags to make Plarn (plastic yarn) that is then crocheted into a 3ft by 6ft sleeping mat! These are given out to the area homeless for bedrolls. Great job Kingsland!

Customer Care Center ChapterThe Customer Care Center held a Coat & Blanket Drive from March 27th-April 7th. A good amount of items were donated and all donations were given to Hands Out For The Homeless to assist with their vision to educate, advo-cate and feed the homeless. Special thanks to Lanel Richardson, Daundra Fletcher and Kimberleigh Mueller for leading this project.
Forest Park ChapterForest Park Citizens partnered with Huie Elementary School for the second year of their “Real Men Read” program on March 2nd. The annual event brings positive male role models from the local community into the school so they can spend time with the students. Eleven Forest Park volunteers read Dr. Seuss stories to the children and answered questions.
Plant Vogtle ChapterCitizens of GA Power members at Plant Vogtle organized a collection of
household goods for the Ronald McDonald House in Augusta. The Ronald McDonald House mission is to keep families with sick children close to each other and provide the care and
resources these families need. These supplies will support those families.

Metro West ChapterThe Metro West Chapter Citizens of Georgia Power assisted North Fulton Chapter with assembling 33 Easter baskets that were donated to Children’s Restoration Network in Roswell.
Statesboro ChapterStatesboro Citizens Chapter partnered with the local Red Cross in Statesboro for their first Blood Drive of year. With several members volunteering and donating, this blood drive was a huge success. Not only did they meet their unit goal of 28, but exceeded with a total of 42 units collected. Each unit saves up to three lives so they should truly be proud of their accomplishment. Members from the local Ambassadors group were there to assist as well.

Augusta Citizens mem-bers recently helped frame the i-CARE Safe Home in Augusta. With the help of two expert framers, the volunteers helped complete a basement in the home and picked up debris around the home. ICare is an organization that helps youth get out of human traffick-ing. The project was organized by Augusta CGP president Linda Goble who serves on their board.
