Asolo Rep proudly presents an FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training touring production of William Shakespeare's JULIUS CAESAR. The eighth annual educational touring production will be helmed by New York-‐ based director and Joseph Jefferson Award-‐winner James Dean Palmer and adapted by Tyler Dobrowsky. This fresh 45-‐minute take on one of Shakespeare's most enduring classics will tour schools and community venues throughout Sarasota and the state of Florida.

Set in the 1980s — a decade marred by greed and indulgence — this fast and fiery adaptation transforms Julius Caesar from Roman politician and general to preeminent Wall Street powerbroker betrayed by his most trusted associates. The consequences of his murder spiral into the streets in a vicious war for control, honor and survival. JULIUS CAESAR endures as a provocative examination of personal responsibility against the backdrop of great political consequences.

Adapter Tyler Dobrowsky is the Associate Artistic Director of Trinity Rep, where he has directed productions of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Julius Caesar, A Flea in Her Ear, It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play, Love Alone (a world premiere with the playwright Deb Salem Smith) and A Christmas Carol. Director James Dean Palmer has served as the Artistic Director of Chicago's Red Tape Theatre for nine seasons. His work has been seen at The Goodman, Victory Gardens, American Theater Company, Trinity Rep, and more.

This performance is free of charge to all FTC Festival badge holders. On stage immediately following the performance, the cast and crew will participate in a “Talk-‐Back Session” workshop, which will explore the students total involvement in the production of The Tragedy of Hamlet, including set design and staging.

SFC – BUILDING E, BLACK BOX STUDIO, ROOM E-‐129 Empowering Student Directors Alexander Nathan Kantor, Astronaut High School In most high schools, students get very few opportunities to develop their theatrical directing skills. Through roundtable discussion and hands-‐on activities, this workshop will focus on opportunities, techniques, and exercises that students and teachers can utilize to encourage more student involvement in the directing process. We will also discuss some of the challenges of students working with their peers and strategies for resolving the power struggles that can occur. SFC – BUILDING E, CHORAL LAB, ROOM E134 IMPROVISATION TECHNIQUES FOR SINGING ACTORS Kathy Morath, AMDA College Basic singing improvisation exercises to help young singers get out of their heads and into the moment. We will spend the entire class on our feet, working through exercises from a variety of Improvisation sources: the Groundlings, Del Close; Second City, Viola Spolin, and the Upright Citizen Brigade, to name a few. Improvisation exercises ground the singing actor's imagination, sense of time, space and physical life in order to discover fresh approaches to Musical Theatre. We will end the class with a mini-‐performance: Solo Singing Improvisations! You will leave the workshop with confidence, clarity and comedy. SFC – BUILDING E, CLASSROOM E-‐105 Journey From Stage to Screen Anthony McMurray-‐ is currently the Academic Ambassador at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. In this workshop discover the differences between acting in front of an audience and in front of the camera. Actors must be able to work in both mediums, but most lack any training in the fastest growing areas of our industry. What are an actor’s responsibilities on-‐stage and on-‐set? How does direction differ? How do you prepare for your scenes without a director? What kinds of choices serve the material in each medium? Take this opportunity to find out about hitting your mark, tracking your continuity, adjusting to your frame, and keeping your performance alive in every take.

Adams, Nova Southeastern University Not all roles demand belting, but you want to know how! Dr. Bill J. Adams (Certified Master Teacher in the Estill Voice Training System) will provide an overview for students, teachers, and performers of vocal technique and demonstrate healthy belting through workshop participants. The singing techniques discussed and practiced in this workshop are used by Tony Award winning artists on Broadway today. Come to the vocal gym and learn how to belt with confidence. SFC – BUILDING E, DANCE STUDIO, ROOM E-‐109 A Fresh Approach to Musical Theatre Jazz Dance Susannah LeMarquand, University of Tampa In the University of Tampa dance program, we offer a variety of technique classes that emphasize a brain-‐ compatible curriculum, meaning dancers are collaborative partners with their peers instructors throughout the class. They connect mind and body to create a learning and thinking environment, so that they walk away understanding more than just the steps. They understand movement concepts, a deeper exploration of technical skills, and creativity. It has been found to be a more fulfilling way to learn and practice their craft, creating a dancer/ performer that will excel in the professional world because they can not only think on their own, but they can have a more well-‐ rounded understanding of their body and how it moves, in order to collaborate in the artistic world. This workshop will be an example of how this type of curriculum can be applied to a musical theatre jazz class. Learning kickline, burlesque, and "chair dance" can help performers and choreographers gain an edge, and potentially help them

land a role or a job as a choreographer. Prof. Fanni Green, University of South Florida Whether it’s a poem, play, or song, you’re creating captivating characters embroiled in conflicts of human experience. Before you memorize your lines, before you get on your feet, before the costumes, lights and audience -‐ your work begins with the text. In this 3-‐step, 90-‐minute acting workshop you’ll first ‘diagram’ the text, ‘discover’ the sounds ‘n rhythms of the words, and ‘highlight’ its actions and intentions. Second, with text in hand, you’ll get on your feet and play, applying your work to memorizing your lines and rehearsal. Thirdly, armed with these tools, and trusting your partner, you can be both specific and imaginative, as you make your performance “live” from moment to moment. In this participatory workshop, students will learn do’s and don’ts of a successful college audition for a musical theatre program. Based on a decade of experience as the head of a musical theatre collegiate program, and years of professional audition experience, this workshop will include tips on choosing audition songs, preparing for on campus accompaniment requirements, submitting video auditions, and more. SFC-‐ BUILDING E, ROOM E-‐109 Improving Your Work Through Improvisation Anthony McMurray-‐ is currently the Academic Ambassador at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. We often find ourselves as performers tied in knots before, during, and after performances when in reality our goal is as simple as giving ourselves permission to speak. Improvisation doesn’t have to be what we’ve seen on “Who’s Line Is It Anyway”. Often times the more serious we take the improv exercise the more we can gain. This workshop will lead attendees through a series of improv exercises in the hope of finding a stronger, more specific performative impulse. In this workshop we will engage in a variety of physical and vocal exercises derived from sources including the Michael Chekhov acting technique, Rasaboxes (devised by Richard Schechner and developed by associates of East Coast Artists), and the vocal work of Jo Estill. HIGH SCHOOL ONE-‐ACT PLAY FESTIVAL ADJUDICATORS

JAMES BRENDLINGER is the Chairman of the Arts and Communication at Lake Howell High School in Winter Park, Florida, where he has taught Acting, Directing, and Stagecraft since 1997. James also owns Penguin Point Productions, a nonprofit company dedicated to providing costume, prop and set building resources to local schools, theaters and churches at no charge. In the summer of 2014, James received a scholarship from the English-‐Speaking Union, which enabled him to study at the Globe Theatre in London. He was FATE’s Outstanding Educator of 2014, and has been the recipient of several awards in recent years, including Lake Howell Teacher of the Year, the Florida Theatrical Association Director’s Award, Orlando Fringe Veteran Producer Award 2015, Don Smith Director’s Award 2015, and The Spirit of the Fringe Award at the Orlando Fringe Festival 2015. SANDRA COCKRELL graduated from Mary Washington College with a BA in Dramatic Arts and Speech. She worked professionally with the Vagabond Players at the Flat Rock Playhouse and the Lighthouse Players in Ocean City, Maryland. She was a Thespian Sponsor and theatre educator in Pinellas County for thirty-‐one years. As a charter member of FATE she served as a board member at

large and received the “Fate Educator of the Year” award in 1999. The Florida Theatre Conference awarded her with a “Lifetime Achievement Award” in 2009.

TED LEWIS (Theater Educator/Stage Combat Choreographer/Instructor)-‐Ted Lewis has been involved in theater since 1974 and he has been an Actor, Stage Combatant, Master Fight choreographer, Dancer, Set Designer or Director in over 164 different productions over the past 34 years. He has founded two Semi-‐Professional combat and comedy troupes in the past 30 years that are still actively performing and he still works on occasion as an advisor to these groups. He has worked as a guest Director with numerous theater companies including the Acrosstown Repertory Theater, Gainesville Community Playhouse, and the Gainesville Dance Company. He has been a member of the Florida Association for Theater Education Executive Board and the Florida State Thespians Board for the past 5 years. In addition to teaching Theater Arts at Buchholz High School he also teaches workshops in Stage Combat, Basic Set Design, Production on a Budget, and Effective Directing in the Theater at colleges, high schools, community theaters and for theatrical conferences. APRIL J'CALLHAN MARSHALL [Southeastern Theatre Conference-‐SETC]. From the tobacco fields of NC to live stage, as a director, actor, administrator, board member, and consultant, April has a passion for all theatre. April holds an MFA in Theatre Performance, and an AB degree in Aesthetics in Society. She has been active in virtually all elements of theatre for over 35 years. As her vocation, April is director of Professional Theatre Services of SETC. To most that means "JOBS." April manages the Professional Auditions & Theatre Job Fair connecting theatres with prospective employees both on and off stage. She also adjudicates theatre festivals and leads audition workshops across the Southeast. April has a wealth of experience in working with actors, directors, casting agents, educators, boards, volunteers, and audience members. I've been onstage, backstage, under stage, above stage, in the audience, and even the parking lot! I'm in a unique perspective in that I am involved with both professional and volunteer theatres. Sometimes the differences are great, but overall the goal of both is to provide the participant and the viewer a meaningful artistic experience, so the core values are the same.

EMILY MIXON is a graduate of The Boston Conservatory and resides in Pensacola, Florida, where she is an active part of the theatre arts community. Currently, she is an adjunct faculty member in the Theatre Department at the University of West Florida and a Teaching Artist for the Pensacola Opera. Emily serves as Coordinator and Instructor for Broadway Dance Machine at Ballet Pensacola. She has worked extensively for Pensacola State College, Pensacola Children’s Chorus, Pensacola Little Theatre, and Washington High School.

CHRIS RICH is an Associate Professor in Theatre and Dance at Troy University. His design work has received national recognition in lighting and sound and regional recognition for scene design from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival. Chris works with SETC and the Alabama Conference of Theatre, helping to grow theatre in the region. He and his wife, Sara Dismukes, have opened Studio 116, art+music+community, to promote the music, arts and artists of Alabama.

THEATRE FOR YOUTH PLAY FESTIVAL RESPONDENTS

Jennifer Adams is the Education Director at the Orlando Repertory Theatre. As a theatre artist committed to empowering young people as performers, creators, leaders, and individuals, Jennifer has served as a director, choreographer, and teaching artist in a variety of theatres, high schools, and community service organizations including the Springer Opera House, Rose of Athens Theatre, Dramatic English: Hong Kong, Arts Works, ArtsBridge America, Lexington Children’s Theatre, Kluge Community Learning Center, and First Stage. Jennifer has developed and led playwriting and devising ensembles, teaching artist training programs, student leadership programs, and theatre curriculum development. Jennifer piloted and managed the First Stage Next Steps program designed for students on the autism spectrum, which was the recipient of the Milwaukee Business Journal’s 2013 Eureka Award for innovation in arts based programming. Jennifer holds an MFA in Theatre for Young Audiences from the University of Central Florida. TIFFANY WEAGLY -‐ Tiffany Weagly-‐Wilkie is honored to be an adjudicator at the Florida Theatre Conference. She is the Director of Theatricals for PerformerStuff.com. She also works as head of casting for The Imagination House. Casting credits include work in film, T.V., theatre, and leisure entertainment. Take wing, kids!

SETC PRELIMINARY AUDITIONS ADJUDICATORS

MARK CATLETT is a Talent Casting Director for Walt Disney Creative Entertainment, based in Orlando Florida; casting such diverse product as The Voices of Liberty, The Hoop Dee Doo Musical Revue and many other parades and shows all over Disney Property. Prior to this position he worked as a Guest Talent Casting Manager for the American Idol Experience based at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. He has also served as the Assistant Artistic Director for Seaside Music Theater, and is a proud member of Actors Equity Association. Mark holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Musical Theatre from the University of Central Florida, and a BA in Speech, Theatre and English Education from Augustana College. KODY JONES holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in acting from Western Illinois University and Secondary Education and Acting degrees from University of Michigan-‐Flint. He has acted and directed professionally all over Chicago and the Midwest for the past twelve years and served as the Artistic Director for Shawnee Summer Theatre in Indiana and The Stage at Island Park in Fargo, North Dakota. He’s worked as a Resident Artist for Flint Youth Theatre for three years and taught theatre to children age four and up with Chicago Public Schools, Arts for All, Lil Buds Theatre, and the American Theatre Company. He has also taught at Western Illinois University and Trollwood Center for The Performing Arts in Minnesota in addition to presenting professional master classes on Laban all over the region. He currently serves on committees for SETC and KCACTF and is the Education Director for Florida Repertory Theatre. ALICIA VARCOE is a director, lighting designer and administrator currently serving as Assistant Artistic Director at Mill Mountain. Directing credits at MMT include Little Shop of Horrors, Poe (director/adapter), and 5 original concerts she directed and co-‐created. Recent lighting credits: Cold and She Made Space (Hollins University); HeadVoice (NYMF); Into the Woods Jr (MMT); Next to Normal (Elon University); 18 months as a staff designer for Feinstein’s/54 Below. Prior to relocating to Roanoke from New York City, Alicia worked in a variety of administrative capacities at Manhattan Theatre Club, INFINITY Stages/Darren Bagert Productions (Side Show on Broadway), New York Philharmonic and Juilliard Jazz. BA Theatrical Design and Production and Music from Elon University.
