PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I am looking forward to serving as your Branch President this year. We have gathered an excep-tional group of women to serve on the Board and many Appointed Positions. I welcome all sugges-tions from members so do not hesitate to contact me.

Our Co-Executive Vice Presidents are full of enthusiasm and ability. I believe you will approve of their Vice Presidents’ project. The Program Vice Presidents planned a great year of programs and some different venues. Our focus on programs comes directly from last April’s State Leadership Conference. Many women mentioned that although they knew about some of the programs pre-sented, they would like the speaker to tell them ways they could be involved. We relayed this infor-mation to the speakers and hope they will be forthcoming with suggestions. This goes with our stra-tegic goal of being more involved in our community.

There are three fantastic fund raisers planned for the year which will be lots of fun. Our Communi-cations Directors are hard at work on advertisement. Membership has a new member already and, of course, the Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer work all year long to keep our financials in order. Public Policy has many new ideas and the Book Review Breakfasts promise to be very exciting. In-terest and Reading Groups are where we get to know our members/friends better so consider join-ing one.

Much more is in store for this year. I look forward to seeing you at future AAUW Vero Beach events.

Joyce Burkett, President

Report on Co-Vice Presidents

Lorrie Borchert and Avalon McGann have been elected as our new co-vice presidents. To-gether they hope to accomplish specific and measurable goals.

One of their goals is to individually visit with each Study/Interest Group (Duplicate Bridge, Creative Writing Group, International Relations Group, Lunch Bunch, and Public Policy). They will introduce themselves, give a short spiel, answer questions, and hand out brochures to possible new comers. They will attend the five monthly ‘book review breakfast series’ and our yearly major fund-raiser, the BAL (The Book/Author Luncheon). Their reports on each event will be included in Hot-line.

A Note from Membership

Membership has been actively assisting Joyce Burkett with putting together the new 2017-18 Hand-book. It is a lot of work and it was decided that perhaps their is a better way to do it. More discus-sion and planning is needed before next year.

We have 11 new members since January, 2017.

Membership is currently preparing for the Cultural Council Art Fair which is on Sat. Sept. 23 from 10 - 4. We have several volunteers who have agreed to participate in the table event. Suzanne Jones

Make Sure to check your Monday, September 18th copy of Luminaries in the Press Journal. Let Go, the dance theater performance we are sponsoring, will be on the cover, and a write up about the show and about us will be on the inside cover. We are grateful to our Luminaries sponsor, Renaissance Senior Living, for supporting this cover advertisement. And guess what? The Executive Director of Renaissance Senior Living is Liz Earman, daughter of our very own Marlowe Arnold!

We have another second-generation sponsor, too. Catee Ingwersen, therapist at the Posture Clinic, is sponsoring an ad that will appear in the Wednesday, September 13th Newsweekly section of the Press Journal. Catee is the daughter of Norma Whitman, a member who lives at Indian River Estates.

AAUW SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS FOR 2017-18 Education is the most powerful weapon

you can use to change the world.

-Nelson Mandela

AAUW Scholarship recipients for the 2017-18 academic year were selected in April. All five recipients qualified for an AA degree, four will continue their education at Indian River State College, and one will transfer to University of Florida.

Five AAUW Branch Scholarships of $1200 each were awarded to Marjorie Baisley (BSN Nursing), Harlequin Gerry (Pre-Dental), Aquila Smith (BSN Nursing), Ember Pappas (Accounting). The $500.00 AAUW Endowed Scholarship was awarded to Lauren Aldridge (BSN Nursing). Two of our scholarship recipients, Harlequin Gerry and Ember Pappas were able to join us at our April meeting at the Audubon House.

In Spring of 2016 two Certified Nursing Assistant Scholar-ships were created. A $700.00 scholarship was awarded to Danielle Sullivan. After Danielle receives her Nursing Assis-tant certificate she plans to pursue a BSN in Nursing.

Calling for members of a Development Committee.

The committee’s goals will be to understand more about Indian River County for two purposes: to build coalitions of like-minded organizations, and recommend to the Board in February 2108 the organizations we donate money to and volunteer for in the 2018-19 fiscal year.

Please contact Linda Barker, Director for Development

Reducing Taxes through Charitable Giving We usually donate money to our favorite charities from our regular checking accounts – our “after tax” money. But you can donate directly from your ac-counts themselves using “pre tax” money. You donate the amount of securi-ties. You don’t pay taxes on it. Neither does your favorite charity!

Learn more about how to give to your favorite causes and reduce your taxes at the same time.

Monday, November 6th Richardson Center Indian River State College 11:15 AM until 11:50

This meeting takes place after AAUW Vero Beach’s Book Review Breakfast. Join us at 9:30 for a continental breakfast and a review of God in the Wilder-ness: Rediscovering the Great Outdoors with the Adventure Rabbi, by Jamie S. Korngold. Review by Rabbi Michael Birnholtz, Temple Beth Shalom
