THE MOST POWERFUL JET SKI SERIES IN HISTORY:MORE POWER. MORE VARIATIONS.

Kawasaki JET SKI personal watercraft have a long history of high performance. While the JET SKI ULTRA 300X and 300LX are already known as powerhouses on the water, Kawasaki engineers were still not satisfied.

By increasing engine efficiency they were able to increase output of the supercharged engine to 310 PS* – the highest in JET SKI’s 40-year history – to ensure the JET SKI brandremains synonymous with personal watercraftsupremacy.

Delivering even higher levels of performance and excitement, the new JET SKI ULTRA 310 Series is comprised of three models. Joining the X, LX models is a new variation, the R (Sport) enabling Kawasaki to meet the needs of a wider range of customers.

* Output measured at the crankshaft under controlled conditions.Actual performance may vary.

DOMINANT PERFORMANCE: MOST POWERFUL JET SKI ENGINE IN HISTORY

DOMINANT PERFORMANCE: MOST POWERFUL JET SKI ENGINE IN HISTORY

Fitted with a supercharger and intercooler, the liquid-cooled 1,498 cm3, In-line 4-cylinder marine engine that propels the ULTRA 310 Series models forward with an exhilarating rush of acceleration produces an output much greater than a normally aspirated engine of the same displacement. This is due in large part to the use of a roots type TVS supercharger, which generates boost even at low rpm to ensure powerful acceleration, right from idle. A number of changes to increase engine efficiency – by reducing mechanical loss, and through other improvements – elevate engine output to 228 kW (310 PS)*.

Supercharger and Intercooler* Twin Vortices Series (TVS) Roots supercharger, featuring twin 4-lobe

rotors, is highly efficient and quite compact. Boost pressure is 16.8 psi.(Photo 2)

* Where some superchargers deliver compressed air in waves, the TVSunit offers continuous delivery, contributing to smooth throttle response.

* Internal planetary gearing increases supercharger speed 2.1 times,to ensure the necessary speed to deliver the high power output. Anexternal pulley has a 0.9 reduction ratio. The combination delivers therequired rotational speed while ensuring a low belt load.

* The roots type supercharger is known as a fixed displacementsupercharger. This design produces large amounts of boost even atlow rpm, for instant and powerful acceleration right off of idle. Withevery revolution it force-feeds the engine 2 litres of air (theoreticalvolume is 2,019.3 cm3 per engine revolution), ensuring a stable supplyof high-pressure intake air at all rpm. The result is a very flat and meatytorque curve and step-free power across the rev range, with none of thetime lag associated with turbochargers. (Photo 1)

* High-flow fuel injectors with 4 orifices complement the engine’ssubstantial output and contribute to combustion efficiency.

* A new fuel pump delivers fuel at a higher pressure (324 kPa[3.3 kgf/cm2, 47 psi] >> 380 kPa [3.87 kgf/cm2, 55.1 psi]), enabling agreater flow volume. This contributes to the increased power, improvedfuel efficiency, and enables a wider range of settings.

* New cast pistons feature a V-shaped groove added to the second land(between the top and 2nd ring grooves). The addition allows moreconsistent oil retention at high loads. Compression ratio is 8.2:1.

* Increasing the number of oil jets per piston from 1 to 2 increases pistoncooling performance. The new jet nozzles are smaller in size (8 mm >>5 mm).

Marine 1,498 cm3 In-line Four Engine* Bore and stroke measure 83.0 x 69.2 mm.

* A single throttle body is used with a bore diameter of 60 mm.

* To ensure ideal intake air pressure, not one, but two air bypass valvesare used. A vacuum air bypass valve is used to balance air pressureupstream and downstream of the throttle body. It works mostly atlow and medium rpm. A second, regulatory air bypass valve aids thevacuum air bypass valve in preventing over-boosting when the throttleis shut (or opened) suddenly. Should the system’s specified maximumpressure be exceeded, the regulatory air bypass valve is activated, allowing air to escape.

* Efficiently cooling the high-pressure intake air is a liquid-cooledintercooler. Friction between the air molecules heats the intake air toextremely high (power-robbing) temperatures, but the intercooler coolsthe air back down to ambient temperature. Cooler air results in highengine output. (Photo 3)

* Lightweight plasticintake manifold wasreshaped. Theslimmer, longer intakeroute (idealised forthe new engine)contributes toincreased low-midrange power. (Photo 4)

Propulsion (Jet Pump / Impeller)* To efficiently convert the ULTRA 310 Series engine’s massive power

into thrust, a large-diameter 160 mm jet pump is used.

* Developed based on feedback from Kawasaki’s race machines, thispump was specially designed to deliver breathtaking acceleration, stable output and good “bite,” even when riding in rough water.

* A large impeller, featuring a sophisticated 3-blade design, delivers bothhigh performance and quiet operation. A revised impeller blade anglecontributes to increased acceleration performance off the line.

* 8-vane guide smoothes and regulates the flow of water from the impellerfor efficient and powerful propulsion.

* Horizontal guide vanes on the grate “grip” the water, keeping the bowfrom rising on acceleration for improved stability. The improved hook-up enables a more efficient transfer of power to thrust.

* ø88 mm steeringnozzle, designedto be short andslim, ensures alight steering load.Handling feels lightdespite the highpower output.(Photo 5)

* Thicker water jacket distributes water evenly around the cylinder forincreased cooling performance. To help prevent dilution due to over-cooling, a newly added check-valve opens to release the water from thejacket when the engine is idling or turned off; closes when running toallow the jacket to fill.

* Oil cooler features an additional water-cooling layer to ensure adequatecooling at higher rpm.

* Baffle plates (2 longitudinal, 1 cross), added to the oil pan act aspartitions, helping to keep oil from collecting on one side of the panduring tight turns, or sudden acceleration/deceleration.

* Oil return holes (4) in the bottom of the crankcase are larger to facilitate(speed up) the return of oil to the oil pan.

* The ULTRA 310 Series models feature a 4-into-2-into-1 powerboat-styleexhaust system, which routes the exhaust pipe upwards. This allowsthe smoothest flow for exhaust gases, maximising exhaust efficiency.

* A second water muffler, added to the right side, provides greatervolume, which reduces exhaust back pressure. This in turn contributesto increase performance.

* With the second water muffler, volume is about double, which reducesmuffler noise for a quieter ride.

DOMINANT PERFORMANCE: SUPERB CALM AND ROUGH-WATER HANDLING

DOMINANT PERFORMANCE:SUPERB CALM AND ROUGH-WATER HANDLINGLoaded with technology from Kawasaki’s championship winning machines, the race-developed hull handles with precision and stability, with a high level of seaworthiness – and at speeds from idle to its impressive top end. Specifically designed to handle the enormous output from the supercharged engine, the hull achieves a balance of strength and light weight.

Lightweight Hull

Ride Plate

Sponsons

Quattro KSD* Like that of its predecessor, the deep-V hull design enables a high

bank angle, motorcycle-like turning performance. This reduces thelateral G-loads imposed on riders during turns, allowing them to betterconcentrate on riding. Measuring 22.5°, the idealised V-angle at thebottom of the hull helps prevent spinouts during sharp turns. As aresult, the ULTRA 310 Series models deliver the neutral handling andturning characteristics for which Kawasaki JET SKI watercraft arefamous.

* Feedback from Kawasaki’s numerous IJSBA championship winningracing machines contributed to a hull specially designed to cope withthe engine’s massive output while offering high stability and responsivehandling in both calm and choppy-water conditions.

* The bottom of the hull slants upwards steeply from the centre sectionto the bow, allowing the ULTRA 310 Series models to penetrate swellsand waves with less shock. At low speeds the result is great stability; athigher speeds the massive thrust enables the hull to push through mostwaves rather than bounce over top of them.

* The lower hull is specially designed to distribute the engine and powerdelivery loads over a wide area.

* With hull thickness determined based on a detailed strength analysis, the hull offers an idealised strength balance matched to the engine’shigh output, and a lightweight package. (Photo 6)

* A groove running from the centre to the rear of the ride plate makes iteasier to hold a straight course when running straight ahead.

* Ridges across the bottom of the bow, Kawasaki Splash Deflectorsdeflect water splashing forward from under the hull. A fourth splashdeflector mounted atthe top reduces sprayduring high-speedturns. Whether turningor blasting straightahead, at high speedsor low, the QuattroKSD minimises spray, allowing greater riderconcentration.(Photo 7)

* Sponsons extend from the hull to provide stable straight-line

FLAGSHIP FEATURES

* Accelerator Position Sensor (APS) converts throttle lever input to anelectronic signal. This signal is then used by the ECU to control thethrottle valves via electric motor. A Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) onthe throttle body provides feedback to the ECU.

* Redundancy in the system (APS and TPS each send two sets of signalsto the ECU) ensures some control is maintained in case of failure.

* The APS is located inside the deck (on the ceiling of the enginecompartment, in front of the engine) to ensure adequate protection fromwater and vibration.

* The APS and throttle lever are connected via mechanical cableensuring exposed equipment is sufficiently water resistant.

Electronic Throttle ValvesElectronic throttle valves efficiently manage the engine’s massive power output. They also make minute engine control possible, enabling easy switching between riding modes.

FLAGSHIP FEATURESAs Kawasaki’s flagship personal watercraft, the models of the ULTRA 310 Series look the part. Sleek styling, headed by an aggressive intake-style design at the bow, conveys their sporty prowess and ensures that these JET SKIs stand out on the water. But not all of their flagship features are obvious at first glance. Advanced technology – like electronic throttle valves, and the numerous riding modes – large storage space and largest-in-class fuel capacity are all concealed below deck. Others, like the all-digital instrumentation, ergonomic riding position and handle adjustability, will be best appreciated once seated at the helm.

* The moderate contour of the seat supports the rider’s hips, offeringenhanced lower body support for hard sport riding.

* The seat shape flares less at the thighs than the standard seat of theULTRA 310X. This makes it easier to grip the seat with the knees whenstand-up riding in rough water.

* Textured material, similar to that used on KX motocrosser seats, contributes to a racy appearance.

* Adding to its quality image, having the hand strap start at the patternline creates a more integrated design. A “JET SKI” logo and blackstitching are some other quality touches.
