We are also laying down plans for a performance tested bull sale. Several ideas are being discussed and you should hear something soon about our plan of action. If you aren't aware of it, the Santa Gertrudis Bull market is getting hot. We are becoming a true breed of choice for those seeking eared cattle. February 2017

Well, there is a lot going on in the Santa Gertrudis world and the Mid-Coast Santa

Gertrudis Association. The board has been hard at work planning future activities for

our members. I hope you will become engaged in our association because this is

your association.

First up, the "International Super Sale" hosted by Mid-Coast, on March 10th at

6:00pm. The all video sale will be on the grounds at the Houston Livestock Show

and Rodeo, upstairs close to the International Room. Debbie Townsend, Patti Ur-

banosky-Ermis, and Richard Graham Hood of American Marketing Service have

worked extremely hard to make this the highlight sale of the year for the Santa Ger-

trudis breed. Mid-Coast will have a large booth space in the show barn for a gather-

ing spot during the show and sale. Please come see the exceptional offering of elite

genetics and enjoy some time with your fellow breeders. You might as well stick

around Houston for the Open Santa Gertrudis show which starts at 2:00pm on Satur-

day, March 11th in the NRG Center show arena.

Next on the list is the Norval and Anna Sells Mid-Coast Junior Show at the Wharton

County Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 6, 2017. The young breeders will have a meet-

ing to elect their junior officers for the ensuing year and will be laying down plans to

represent the Mid-Coast Association at Junior Nationals. This is a great place for

breeders and juniors to get acquainted, so I urge you to come out and see what a

great job these young people do representing you.

Our annual Mid-Coast "Cattleman's Opportunity Sale" and Annual meeting has found

a new home. The board decided to head to a more centralized location and selected

the William and Alton Allen Exposition Center in Hallettsville, Texas. Over the last few

years, it has been hard to secure the sale facility at the fairgrounds in Brenham be-

cause their fair has stretched out to encompass two weekends and the fair board

has decided to extend the unavailability period for another week either side of the

fair. Unfortunately, all other weekends either side of that are already booked, hence

our move to Hallettsville. If you have attended the Bluebonnet sale, you know this is

a great facility.

Matt Kubena is heading up the sale and will be getting consignment information out

very soon. We are going to make this a screened sale, so get your best ready to bring

to Hallettsville.

We are also laying down plans for a performance tested bull sale. Several ideas are

being discussed and you should hear something soon about our plan of action. If you

aren't aware of it, the Santa Gertrudis Bull market is getting hot. We are becoming a

true breed of choice for those seeking eared cattle.

Last, but not least, John Kiker and Delbert Walker are working on a field day. Details

will follow, so stay tuned.

That's about all for now. I look forward to seeing all of you in Houston!

From the Desk of …

John Ford,

SGBI Executive Director

I have taken a short break from packing the SGBI display and breed information for the Na-tional Cattlemen’s Beef Association Trade Show and Convention to write this article. So many positive things have happened during the last 90 days and I am eager to share recent suc-cesses with Midcoast members.

In late November I stopped at the Brazos Livestock Commission Co. in Bryan, Texas for the barn’s 19th Annual Commercial Replacement Female Sale. The second-high selling pen of pairs was a set of STAR 5s (SG x Here-ford) with ¾ Hereford calves at side. They brought $2750/pair. The high selling pen was a group of Tiger-stripe females with much larger calves at side. They brought $2,800/pair. For the most part, the majority of the cattle were black hided pairs and they sold anywhere from $250 to $850 lower than the STAR 5s. One month later, a pen of purebred Santa Gertrudis Females (30 days exposed) were the high selling pen at the Arizona National Commercial Replacement Female Sale. The heifers outsold the Supreme Champion Pen by $400/head. It is important to note the Champion Pen was a set of black hided cattle. The de-mand for red hided females in the desert Southwest is surpassing the supply.

In January, during the SGBI Carcass Quality Roundtable, held on the grounds of the Ft. Worth Stock Show, Tanner Pickett, JBS Five Rivers – Hartley Feeders, shared harvest data on 3,500 head of Santa Gertrudis and Santa Gertrudis influenced animals. The information Tanner provided is turning industry heads. Santa Gertrudis and Santa Gertrudis influenced cattle beat the plant average 8%-16% for Prime/Choice carcasses. For those not familiar with JBS Five Rivers, they are the largest global feeder. Not only is the data sound and creditable it was collected and shared by the world’s largest cattle feeder - now that is exciting!

I could go on and on, but time is limited. I need to head to Nashville for NCBA in time to see Dr. Kent Anderson’s presentation on the increased availability of DNA verified EPDs and the breeds that have adopted and utilize this technology. Yes, Santa Ger-trudis is one of the limited number of breeds that utilizes this cutting-edge genetic technology and Dr. Anderson will be sharing that information with NCBA Cattleman College attendees. It is an exciting time to be a Santa Gertrudis Breeders, let’s keep our foot on the gas!

Mid-Coast Santa Gertrudis Association Members/ Breeders: Have you ever considered advertising in the Santa Gertrudis USA magazine, but found that you’d benefit more from sharing an advertisement with other breeders? We are canvassing our Mid-Coast membership on behalf of the Board of Directors to determine interest in co-op advertising. Hello Jr. Mid-Coast members I hope y’all had a great first major at Fort Worth and

are looking forward to San Antonio and Houston. We had quite a few members
