What is the Apprenticeship Accelerator?
Grant awarded in Fall 2016 to Job Service North Dakota Intent of the grant is to raise awareness of apprenticeship
opportunities in the following industries: Healthcare IT/Technology Manufacturing Energy
The Department of Commerce is leading meetings throughout the state during Summer 2017
Partnership between Commerce, JSND, CTE and DOL Office of Apprenticeship

What is an Apprenticeship?

Apprenticeship is a combination of on-the-job training and related instruction in which workers learn the practical and theoretical aspects of a highly skilled occupation. Apprenticeship programs can be sponsored by individual employers, joint employer and labor groups, and/or employer associations.
Types of Apprenticeships
• Time Based– Apprentices complete a required number of hours in on-
the-job training and related instruction.
• Competency Based– Apprentices progress at their own pace – they demonstrate
competency in skills and knowledge through proficiency tests, but are not required to complete a specific number of hours
• Hybrid– Uses minimum and maximum range of hours and the
successful demonstration of identified and measured competencies.

• Structured on the job training – Training from an experienced mentor
• Related Instruction – Technical education at a community college, online or at the job site
• Rewards for skill gains – Structured increases in wages for gaining higher level skills
• Industry recognized credential – Completion results in a nationally industry recognized credential which guarantees the apprentice is fully qualified for the job
