Detroit hit .258 (1435x5556) as a team, which ranked eighth in the AL. The Tigers finished the season with 35 triples, which were the second-most in the AL. On the mound, Detroit's pitching staff posted a 5.36 ERA (1420.1IP/846ER), which ranked last in the AL. NICK THE STICK: Nicholas Castellanos led the American League with 10 triples, while he was $ed for sixth with 72 extra-base hits, ninth with 101 RBI and $ed for 10th with 301 total bases. Castellanos is the first Tiger to lead the AL in triples since Aus$n Jackson in 2012 and was the first Tigers third baseman with 10-or-more triples in a season since Ossie Vi% had 12 triples in 1916. Along with his 10 triples, Castellanos finished the season with 26 home runs and 101 RBI, becoming the sixth Tiger since 1913 and the first since Al Kaline in 1956 to have 10-or-more triples, 25-or-more homers and 100-or-more RBI in a season. Castellanos also became the 10th player in Tigers history to have a 100-RBI season at age 25-or-younger and the first since Miguel Cabrera in 2008. FULMER, UPTON SELECTED TO 2017 ALL-STAR GAME: Michael Fulmer and Jus$n Upton were each selected to the American League All-Star Team. Fulmer earned his first All-Star honor, while Upton was named an All- Star for the fourth $me in his career. Upton entered the game as a defensive replacement in the fi"h inning and went 1x2. Fulmer did not par$cipate in the game a"er star$ng on the Sunday before the All-Star Game. ALL NINE FOR ROMINE: Andrew Romine played all nine defensive posi$ons on September 30 at Minnesota, becoming the fi"h player in Major League Baseball history to accomplish the feat. Romine joined Detroit’s Shane Halter (October 1, 2000 vs. Minnesota), Texas’ Sco% Sheldon (September 6, 2000 at Chicago (AL)), Minnesota’s Cesar Tovar (September 22, 1968 vs. Oakland) and Kansas City’s Bert Campaneris (September 8, 1965 vs. California) as players that have played all nine posi$ons in a Major League game. Romine started the game in le" field and then moved to center field, right field, third base, shortstop, second base, catcher, back to second base, pitcher and finished the game at first base. Romine’s pitching performance was the fourth of his Major League career and he re$red the only ba%er he faced in the eighth inning, inducing a ground out from Miguel Sanó. Romine became the first posi$on player in the live ball era to earn a hold. THREE FOR THE PRICE OF ONE: The Tigers turned a triple play on September 8 at Toronto as Jeimer Candelario, Ian Kinsler and Efren Navarro combined on a 5-4-3 triple play. According to the SABR Triple Play Database, it was the 34th triple play in franchise history and the first for the Tigers since August 1, 2001 vs. Sea%le when Damion Easley, Deivi Cruz and Shane Halter turned one. BOYD'S NEAR NO-NO: Ma%hew Boyd finished one out shy of a no-hi%er on September 17 vs. the White Sox, throwing 8.2 no-hit innings before giving up a double to Tim Anderson. Boyd turned in the first complete game shutout of his big league career, allowing just the one hit with one walk and five strikeouts. It was the first shutout by a Tigers pitcher since Michael Fulmer on August 14, 2016 at Texas and the first one- hi%er by a Tigers pitcher since Jus$n Verlander on August 26, 2015 vs. Los Angeles (AL). WELCOME TO THE SHOW: Eight Tigers pitchers made their Major League debut during the 2017 season. Victor Alcántara, Chad Bell, Myles Jaye, Joe Jiménez, Jairo Labourt, Arcenio León, Ar$e Lewicki and Zac Reininger each saw their first big league ac$on this season. STEWART, SOTO NAMED TIGERS 2017 MINOR LEAGUE PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE YEAR: Ou&ielder Chris$n Stewart and le"handed pitcher Gregory Soto were named the 2017 Tigers Minor League Player and Pitcher of the year, respec$vely. This marks the second year in a row that Stewart has been named the Detroit Tigers Player of the Year. In 136 games at Double A Erie, Stewart hit .256 (124x485) with 86 RBI, 67 runs scored and an Eastern League best 28 home runs. He finished the season in the top five of most Eastern League offensive categories, including home runs (28, 1st), RBI (86, 3rd), doubles (29, T-4th) and slugging percentage (.501, 5th). Soto excelled at Single A West Michigan, carrying a 10-1 record with a 2.25 ERA (96.0IP/24ER) and 116 strikeouts, while holding opposing hi%ers to a .204 ba*ng average over 18 starts. His performance earned him a call-up to Single A Lakeland on August 4, where he con$nued s$fling hi%ers, going 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA (28.0IP/7ER) and 28 strikeouts. THREE PROSPECTS NAMED TO YAHOO! SPORTS ALL- MINOR LEAGUE TEAM: RHP Franklin Perez, CF Daz Cameron and C Jake Rogers, who were all acquired from the Houston Astros in exchange for RHP Jus$n Verlander on August 31, were named as honorable men$on to the Yahoo! Sports All-Minor League Team. Perez, who is ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the Tigers organiza$on by MLB Pipeline, pitched in 19 games, including 16 starts, between Single A Buies Creek and Double A Corpus Chris$ and compiled a 6-3 record with three saves, a 3.02 ERA (86.1IP/29ER) and 78 strikeouts. Cameron, who is ranked by MLB Pipeline as the sixth-best prospect in the Tigers system, played in 123 games between Single A Quad Ci$es and Single A West Michigan this season and hit .271 (123x454) with 80 runs scored, 29 doubles, eight triples, 14 home runs, 74 RBI and 32 stolen bases. Rogers, who is ranked as the eighth-best prospect in the Tigers system by MLB Pipeline, posted a .261 (110x422) ba*ng average with 60 runs scored, 25 doubles, four triples, 18 home runs and 70 RBI in 112 games between Single A Quad Ci$es, Single A Buies Creek and Single A Lakeland. TIGERS PLAYERS IN THE COMMUNITY: Members of the 2017 Detroit Tigers got involved in the community like never before, par$cipa$ng in a variety of programs including the following: - Kinsler’s Kids: In partnership with The Birthday Party Project and the Detroit Tigers Founda$on, an affiliate of Ilitch Chari$es, Ian Kinsler and his wife, Tess, hosted 60 children and volunteers at Comerica Park to celebrate the magic of birthdays. Guests were treated to a Tigers game in a luxury suite, received dinner, birthday cupcakes and Kinsler’s Kids t-shirts. The children celebra$ng their birthdays also received a personalized Detroit Tigers jersey and a personalized autographed photo. - Sanchez’s Li"le Smiles: In partnership with the Detroit Tigers Founda$on, an affiliate of Ilitch Chari$es, Anibal Sanchez and his wife, Ana, invited guests to a%end a Tigers game in their personal luxury suite. Each guest received a Sanchez's Li%le Smiles t-shirt, dinner and an autographed photo. In 2017, charitable partners included Children's Hospital of Michigan -- craniofacial unit, Variety -- the Children's Charity, Coali$on on Temporary Shelter and the Ronald McDonald House of Detroit. - Miguel Cabrera Family Scholarship Fund: In 2017, Miguel Cabrera and his wife, Rosangel, in partnership with the Detroit Tigers Founda$on, an affiliate of Ilitch Chari$es, announced the establishment of the Miguel Cabrera Family Scholarship Fund. The fund, a permanent endowment with the Community Founda$on for Southeast Michigan valued at nearly $250,000, will annually award two college scholarships to first genera$on college students. In 2017, the scholarships were awarded to Donnell Williams of Riverview Community High School and Deepa Dey of the Detroit Interna$onal Academy. - Keeping Kids in the Game: Miguel Cabrera joined the Detroit Tigers Founda$on, an affiliate of Ilitch Chari$es, to host the ninth Annual Keeping Kids in the Game event. The sold-out fundraising event, hosted in partnership with the Miguel Cabrera Founda$on, raised over $315,000 to support children's health and youth baseball, while also hos$ng over 200 pa$ents and family members from the Children's Hospital of Michigan and University of Michigan C.S. Mo% Children's Hospital for a special night at Comerica Park. - Autographs for a Cause: Tigers players partnered with the Detroit Tigers Founda$on, an affiliate of Ilitch Chari$es, to raise money for local and na$onal chari$es through a fan mail program called Autographs for a Cause. Through the program, players signed limited edi$on Topps baseball cards in exchange for a dona$on to benefit a charity of the players' choice.
