“We rise by lifting others” – Robert IngersollEvery member of the BROWNS Family – teachers, trainers, students and friends – deserves the opportunity to enrich their Australian experience and contribute towards a better tomorrow.
The BROWNS Elevate Initiative embraces learning with purpose. In the classroom, the principles of Content and Language Integrated Learning bring pressing social issues to life; students develop empathy, intuitiveness and social consciousness alongside their language skills. Outside the classroom, the initiative harnesses these learnings with monthly student involvement in local non-profit and charitable organisations.
One by one, the participation of BROWNS students creates profound change for a range of issues and organisations supported by the BROWNS Elevate Initiative.
Management Commitment
BROWNS endorses corporate social responsibility and seeks to have minimal environmental impact.
BROWNS School Founder, Richard Brown has long supported the provision of English Language Teaching to refugees in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. Full-tuition BROWNS scholarships are made available each year to refugees and humanitarian entrants without any financial assistance from the Australian government. Over 125 scholarships have been awarded to date.
Recycling & Waste Reduction
BROWNS has taken significant steps to reduce its waste by:
ensuring school recycling bins are available and accessible printing information only when necessary moving towards double-sided copying sourcing and using recycled, unbleached,
100% post-consumer paper for printed materials when possible implementing a virtually paperless
administration system conducting student English level placement
tests online donating old computers and mobile phones.
Carbon Emissions and Energy Consumption
Management and staff are further working to reduce energy usage by:
installing energy efficient lighting, including open plan offices and meeting rooms minimising after hours air-conditioning use smart-blinds to minimise energy used in
cooling and heating installing multi-purpose devices to reduce
the number of appliances used and disposed encouraging staff to switch off appliances
and equipment when not in use using energy efficient appliances.
School Design
BROWNS campuses have been constructed under the guidelines of environmentally sustainable design principles. Specifically, in relation to the:
fit-out materials lighting and signage equipment, including water fixtures fittings waste management.
Commuting
BROWNS has a strong health and fitness culture and seeks to provide its people with facilities that allow them to walk or cycle to work. The school has installed bicycle racks at its Gold Coast campus and in Brisbane makes sponsored CityCycle passes available to staff and visitors free-of-charge.
