2017 SEMINAR SCHEDULE

Updated: 01/11/2017

UNDERSTANDING WOOD (PAID SEMINAR) y Friday and Saturday: 9:00 am

Problems with failure can always be predicted and circumvented if you understand the structure and nature of the material we all wish to manipulate, wood! From understanding its cellular make-up to reading boards you need to purchase at the local retail store, this course will help you understand just what a changeable, varying subject wood is, and how to work with its features to achieve the end result you hope to attain. Want to know why you should scrape red oak but sand white oak for the best finish? How about which wood to use for an application in moist conditions? Or why the 1,400-hour highboy you just finished building in the basement should not be displayed in the Sunday room? This seminar will give you the answers!

This and extended versions of this course have received consistent rave feedback from previous The Woodworking Shows attendees, Woodworking in America seminar attendees, Popular Woodworking subscribers and Woodworking with Ron students.

This three-hour seminar will give you great information about the physical structure and properties of wood and how to use that knowledge to tailor your woodworking and finishing skills, how lumber is cut and what that means for your projects, how to select the best wood for your project from retail outlets, how to read defects in wood and how to understand the behavior of wood over time. You will understand the need for fleam on saws, adjustable-mouth planes and the different pitch on chisels. This very popular course is derived from a 40-hour course developed in conjunction with the U.S. Forestry Service and the University of Wisconsin at Lacrosse, and Ron has recently completed a 6-hour video on this subject with Popular Woodworking.

SAW SHARPENING (PAID SEMINAR) y Sunday: 9:00 am

Do you own and use a hand saw? Great! Now, how many of you have one that is sharp? Did you ever wonder why there are so many different sizes and shapes of saws and what they are used for? What is so important about point counts of saws? Is it true there is a saw designed for cutting wet or frozen wood? What the heck are rake and thrust pattern and fleam? And why is this all so important for learning how to sharpen a saw?

This is the information everyone wants to know how to properly sharpen saws so they will cut wood well! Ron delivers information on different kinds of saws and saw teeth and their proper uses and then launches right into how to make them sharp so you can get them up and running again quickly. He discusses the correct tools for different sharpening purposes and provides information on simple jigs that are actually living in your scrap pile.

Each attendee will have the opportunity for hands-on instruction in properly sharpening a saw, and will receive printed and on-line resources for successful sharpening at home.

Have you ever asked your neighbor or folks in your wood club if there was someone around who could sharpen saws? Why not BE that person?!

RON HERMANRon has done everything from pit-sawing trees to hand-building log cabins with mule teams to creating and aging historic restorations to match the existing structures, as well as building multi-million-dollar new-construction homes. He is credentialed to meet the strict standards for working on houses registered with the National Historic Trust, and has performed several period restorations.

UNDERSTANDING AND USING HAND SAWS y Friday and Saturday: 1:00 pm

Ron is well-known in the woodworking community as a hand-saw expert, and has several top-selling videos on the topic with Popular Woodworking. In this seminar, he will show you how different saws are intended for different uses: some to leave a smooth edge for glue, others to cut across the grain of hard woods, and others that would be effective in cutting frozen wood, among many others. Learn how to choose the proper saw for your task at hand and make sure it is fitted properly to yourself. You will quickly learn how using the proper saw for the job makes a world of difference! Pairs perfectly with Ron's paid saw-sharpening seminar!

KEEPING IT SHARP & SHARPENING YOUR TOOLS y Friday and Saturday: 2:30 pm; Sunday: 1:00 pm

Sharp tools are safer, faster and more effective and efficient to use. It doesn't take eight hours and sixteen stones of varying grits from different countries to effectively sharpen your tools. Learn how to sharpen like professional housewrights do--quickly, effectively and cost-efficiently--so as not to waste time on the job. Ron will teach you how to know what your tools need--cutting, sharpening and/or honing--and how to produce that keen edge that will glide through your next project. This course covers chisels, planes, knives, turning tools, bits, and other edged tools. Remember--there are only two states to any edged tool: Sharp, and Not Sharp!

MAKE YOUR OWN MOLDING y Friday and Saturday: 4:00 pm

This introduction to molding will educate you as to what molding is and its many uses. From accenting fine furniture to finishing out a room to drawing the eye to or away from architectural features, molding has been around for thousands of years. Ron will show you how molding is easily made by hand or power tools and introduce you to shooting boards as the perfect way to precisely cut and fit molding joints. You will also learn just how easy it is to make bracket feet using molding!

HAND PLANES FOR THE POWER TOOL WOODWORKER y Friday 12:30 pm; Saturday: 11:30 am; Sunday: 10:30 am

Oh, the shame! A dedicated power tool guy going over to the dark side: hand tools! Well, I may be the power tool guy for Fine Woodworking magazine but I'm also an avid hand-plane user and it's not because of some desire to do things the olde-tyme way when life was all puppies that never grow up. I don't think I have the stamina to create serious projects without the help of my 60-cycle friends but once the heavy lifting is done I turn to my well-tuned and much used hand planes. Trimming tenons, working gnarly grain, cleaning up planer marks, fine-tuning a dado, the list is endless and the best tools for these chores are hand planes.

A small handful of carefully chosen and well tuned handplanes can do those fine tuning chores (and even some heavy lifting chores) faster, quieter and more accurately than power tools and the enjoyment of working with well tuned handplanes really does make for satisfying woodworking. Stop by my hand plane seminar and see the light!

SCRAPING BY WITHOUT SANDPAPER y Friday 2:30 pm; Saturday: 1:30 pm; Sunday: 12:00 pm

It's amazing how quickly and efficiently a simple steel card scraper can clean up and refine a wooden surface. Sandpaper becomes a seldom used item in your shop once scrapers are mastered. But there's the rub, how the heck do you get a sharp, long-lasting burr on a card scraper, and how do you use it to get those beautiful, super-fine shavings? it's really much easier than you think and I'm going to show you how to quickly and easily put a fine, sharp burr on your scrapers, card or cabinet. And I'll show you how easy and fast it is to restore that wonderful burr when it stops being quite so wonderful. The whole process is so easy that it's darned near magic. We're also going to take a look at the Stanley 80 and 82 scrapers, you need these in your surfacing arsenal.

FINISH WITH VARNISH y Friday 4:30 pm; Saturday: 3:30 pm; Sunday: 1:30 pm

Varnish is one of the best finishes for furniture and the great thing about varnish is that it's easy to apply as a wipe-on finish or with a brush. True varnish is a solvent-based alkyd polymer that creates a very durable and easily repaired finish. Since true varnish is a vegetable-oil based alkyd, not a plastic, it can be lightly sanded and re coated without interaction problems between new and old and if the finish is severely degraded the old finish can be easily stripped off leaving a clean, fresh surface ready for new finish.

In this seminar I'm going to show you how to apply varnish by wiping and brushing. Wiping varnish is dead simple to use and the results are amazing. Brushing varnish takes a bit of skill but with the correct brush and a few best practices you can be laying down finish that will rival any finish applied by a spray gun and I'll show you the process.

We'll also take a look at spar varnish for those of us who build furniture that floats. Spar is not only ideal for wooden boats it's also a great finish any project that is going to see a lot of exposure to water.

ROLAND JOHNSONTo me one the real joys of woodworking is that hand tools and power tools can so effectively complement each other. There are days when my shop is a raucous cacophony of whirling cutters and singing blades and other days where hours of tranquilly reflective work create the Zen of Woodworking atmosphere that we often romanticize as the only way, and I enjoy every day.

CHAINSAW TUNEUP (SELECT CITIES) y Friday, Saturday & Sunday 1:00 pm

Chainsaw maintenance is 90% of chainsaw use. This 45-min workshop will save you time and money in repairs. No special tools required. Learn how to make your chainsaw work for you! This talk walks you through the maintenance and use of one of the most useful tools: the chainsaw. As a lumberjack in Idaho in the late sixties, Pat learned how to completely disassemble, clean and reassemble a chainsaw at dusk in order to be most productive during the daylight hours. He has felled trees large and small, limbed them forty feet in the air and rebuilt hundreds of saws. Whether you have a chainsaw that you use once a year to clean up your yard or are thinking of buying your own woodlot to maintain, this workshop will save you hours and hundreds of dollars in repair-shop and small-engine fees.

Pat will provide a chainsaw to disassemble, clean and reassemble walking you through all of the pieces that may need to be repaired, replaced or just cleaned as well as the best ways in which to clean them. From adjusting the engine speed, sharpening the chain to what type of fuel ratio to mix; he will cover it all.

HOW TO CUT A DOVETAIL TENON WITH HAND TOOLS (SELECT CITIES) y Friday 3:00 pm, Saturday 10:30 am, Sunday 10:30 am

The dovetail is an excellent joint for small and large framing alike. We particularly like using it for floor joists in timber frames as it is not a very demanding joint that is easy to produce and looks beautiful. It is simply a tenon that fits into an oversized joint and tightened with a wedge. In this presentation we will detail the steps in laying out and cutting the tenon with all hand tools including the measuring, scoring and cutting. We will show some of our favorite tools to make the process go smoothly.

HAND TOOL CARE AND MAINTENANCE (SELECT CITIES) y Saturday 3:00 pm, Sunday 11:30 am

We specialize in finding the best hand tools for our clients use. However, we know that sometimes you just can’t find a new hand tool that is as good as the old version. We will spend this workshop demonstrating the best ways to maintain and revitalize your favorite hand tools. Whether you are trying to refurbish your latest flea market find or just maintain the luster on that Lie Nielsen plane you are sure to walk away with a few tricks and maybe some new product ideas.

PAT HENNINPat and Patsy Hennin started Shelter Institute in the early 1970’s on the premise that house building and home ownership are affordable. They broke down the house building process and studied all of the various systems to create a clear picture to homeowners, would-be homeowners, builders and engineers.
