INTRODUCTIONDaltons, established in 1947, are well known as one of New Zealand’s leading suppliers of potting mixes, composts, mulches, granulated bark products and specialty fertilisers for commercial and retail customers.

Daltons are now also the exclusive New Zealand distributors for Garden City Plastics (GCP), Desch Plantpak, HerkuPlast and Javo. Here you will find a comprehensive list of pots, containers, trays, accessories, potting machines, tray automation and substrate handling systems that Daltons now supply wholesale throughout New Zealand.

Garden City Plastics was established in 1975 and is now Australasia’s largest pot manufacturer. They offer quality plastic products and the latest in new technology, competitively priced and always available when required.

For over 35 years, most of their black plastics containers have been made from recycled plastic, which has just been given a boost by the new and recently introduced recycling program in Australia. Pots no longer need to go into land fill, they are 100% RECYCLABLE – a recycling program is yet to be developed in New Zealand but it is being investigated at industry level.

Desch Plantpak is a young, dynamic and innovative enterprise and this is reflected throughout the company’s structure. Concepts such as innovation, service and reliability completely endorse this vision. That’s why Desch Plantpak’s ambitions say: Growing together with the grower!

Since 1972 HerkuPlast has been developing, producing and distributing propagation trays for horticultural and soft fruit growers. Their team of industry experts have kept HerkuPlast an industry leader through the innovation of new designs developed for better plant health and growth potential. Growers and distributors, appreciate HerkuPlast production features, high standards, designs, value, and on-time delivery. HerkuPlast works with high value recycled material and uses solar energy (photo voltaic) in order to reduce our product carbon footprint (PCF).

Javo work on the development, production and sale of potting machines, tray automation systems, substrate handling machinery and robot applications. Their state of the art factory uses modern engineering and electronic technology to produce the highest quality product. Javo operates in more than 60 countries, including New Zealand where they partner with Daltons Ltd.

Substantially better, more suitable and much easier to useSeveral aspects of the pots in the Desch Range have been improved enormously. They now have broader and thus stronger rims. Each pot contains superior drainage canals which ensures improved drainage and water management in the pot. Preforma and Plugs

Square tubes give the opportunity for flat filling at the propagation bench and gives space saving along with water saving. Square tubes naturally guide the roots ensuring no spiralling of roots therefore giving the quickest initiation into the next size they are potted on to.

PROPAGATION


Preforma plugs are versatile and space saving. There are 240 plugs per tray that can be placed and dispatched efficiently. Being used for deflasking at tissue culture, harder to propagate Australian Natives and a consistent high percentage strike rate with general lines. Individual root systems develop meaning no ‘transplant shock’ when potting on or tubing up (into liners).

Kwikpot trays are a wonderful way to maximise space with direct striking of cuttings and specific seed crops. Choose the cell configuration to give you the best spacing, ideal plug size for potting on and maximise the plants on your benches.

All Kwikpot trays fit into a Seedling Tray (TRS349X) which means you can use them again and again and again!

Push-out-plate – for easy plant removal. Most QuickPot trays has a corresponding push-out-plate.

Plug Extractor – for loosening and removing plugs from QuickPot trays. This mobile is either hand or foot operated and requires no electricity, hydraulics or compressed air. The standard push-out-plates are simply screwed onto the push-out table.

The GCP Saucerless Hanging Basket has a raised done in the base for water retention. It comes complete with a hanger or can be sold as separate units.

The GS range is the traditional “Gold Standard” design used for many years by NZ nurseries. They come complete with pot, hanger and saucer, or as separate units. Colours: Green and Black.

The Jacinta is a hanging pot with a smooth surface. The inner base reservoir provides the plant with a generous water buffer that will reduce watering frequency.

Roots easily penetrate the fiber pot walls. Here you can see the lateral branching developing after the roots apical dominance has been stunted by air-pruning. This gives the plant many more root tips with which to uptake water and nutrients.

How the Fertilpot worksAerial Root Prunning

Containers impermeable to roots hair cause deformation to the roots. The most common problem is coiling of roots, but this is not the only one (roots gathering in corners, roots growing upwards, crushed roots etc).

When plants are grown in a Fertilpot, the roots quickly penetrate the pot walls. Contact with the air stops the roots from elongating, root buds start to appear and secondary roots start to develop throughout the pot. This phenomenon is known as ‘aerial root prunning’.

The advantages of this are two fold; one of interest to the user of the Fertilpot (1) and the other to the user of the plant grown in the Fertilpot (2).

1 The volume of the pot is used 100% by a dense network of root hairs. In containers with impermeable walls, a few very long roots use all the area around the pot. This difference in quality of the root system is the main explanation for the marked difference in development between two identical plants grown in a Fertilpot and a plastic pot, using the same pot size.

2 When a plant grown in a Fertilpot is planted or repotted (without removing the pot), the dormant root buds set during aerial containment are immediately activated. There is no shock from transplanting, this difference is particularly marked when ground conditions are difficult (cold, drought, adverse season etc). Finally, as there is no deformation in the root system, the plant establishes easily and settles into the soil quickly.

The Fertilpot is easily biodegradable and transforms into organic matter.

The speed at which it degrades depends on different parameters, primarily linked with the intensity of microbial activity. With spring planting in a temperate climate, only a few fragments of the wall will still be visible after a few months.

The Dioni tray is a new concept in the use and handling of biodegradable containers. Developed jointly by Fertil International and Desch Plantpak, the Dioni tray encourages airflow around the pots for better root formation. The design of the Dioni tray provides an air space between the Fertilpot wood fiber pot and the plastic cell wall. This will promote air pruning of the root tips emerging from the porous walls of the Fertilpot.

Improved plant establishment Seasol provides a synergistic range of natural compounds and trace elements which stimulate root growth, needed for rapid establishment of new plantings. Seasol reduces transplant shock by stimulating root growth providing better access to soil moisture and nutrients.

Improved fruit set and quality The use of Seasol as an organic health tonic significantly improves the benefits of a balanced nutritional program for optimising fruit set and delivering more consistent yields, year after year. Seasol enhances the sugar content in some fruits and treated plants show higher brix readings.
