Welcome back to Semester 2 of the school
year! This term we have enjoyed many
exciting days and events with a visit from
the Moorambilla Voices, NAIDOC Week and
National Tree Day which saw a fantastic
finish to the end of the second school week.
On Wednesday the 2nd of August, Form C
presented their wonderful class performance
‘Tiddalick the Frog.’ Students of Form C
worked exceptionally hard in preparation for
their play, reciting their lines and designing
unique character costumes. Congratulations
to those students who were presented with
merit certificates for all their hard work and
accomplishments this term!
On Tuesday the 25th of July, Artistic Director and
founder Michelle Leonard and Tainga Savage from
the Moorambilla Voices Program connected with our
students to learn about music, dance and
performance.
Moorambilla Voices is a nationally-awarded program
and seeks at its core to give country kids a rare
opportunity to sing, dance and create incredible
performances with artists of the highest calibre. The
friendships the children make, and the incredible
experiences they have along the way, are life-
changing beyond the performances themselves.
Under Artistic Director Michelle Leonard OAM, the
annual program of performances and tours has
flourished, receiving numerous national and state
awards.
Each year 300 students attend a camp where they
dance, sing, compose, paint, weave, play drums and
learn about the cultural traditions and stories of
their landscape. This is delivered in partnership with
the highest quality professional musicians,
performers, composers, choreographers and visual
artists including Taikoz, Song Company and the
Australian World Orchestra.
The choirs meet for two residency camps in
Baradine, in August and September for the Gala
Concert. At these camps, they work alongside leading
composers, musicians, artists and choreographers to
engage in challenging new learning experiences and
collaboratively create repertoire for performances.
The Moorambilla Voices Regional Girls and Boys
Choirs are for primary students in Years 3-6.
Following the Skills Development Workshop Tour,
talented girls and boys are offered a place in the
choir and the chance to participate in the Baradine
Residency Camps, Gala Performances, Tours,
Concerts and recordings throughout the year.
Moorambilla Voices works hard to ensure that any
child who is offered a place is supported financially
to do so through our policies of inclusion and equity.
Very special thanks to Michelle and
Tainga for coming all the way from
NSW to Leonora, Western Australia to
spend time with and inspire our
students.
‘Little Red’ by Bethan Woollvin was
generously gifted to our students to
read which is available in the school
library.

From the 24th – 28th of July, Leonora District
High School proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and
Islanders Day Observance Committee. It is a
time that celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander history, culture and achievements.
NAIDOC Week also recognises the contributions
and knowledge that Indigenous Australians give
to our country and society.
After an inspiring opening
ceremony on Monday morning,
students, staff, family members
and members of the Leonora
community were escorted by our
local police officers as they
paraded down Tower Street
before enjoying a nice sausage
sizzle lunch at the park.
Thank you to Jade, Chris, Kim and
Maurveen from Centrecare for your
kind work and contribution on the
day. Thank you to all the families,
and community members for joining
us and helping to organise what
was a very successful beginning to
NAIDOC Week!
The rest of the week consisted of
bustling, activity-filled days with a
variety of creative and educational
projects planned and provided by
the teachers and AEIOs. Stone and
wood art, jewellery making, wool
crafts, face painting, storytelling
and traditional music were enjoyed
all throughout the week. Thank you
to the wonderful parents who
prepared delicious home cooked
food to share after the assembly.
Special thanks to Cheryl, Gail,
Talbot and Di for singing songs and
telling stories for our students. It
was lovely to see so many visitors
and students at the school enjoying
the day in nice sunny weather.
From the Principal
Dear parents and caregivers,
Welcome everyone back to Term 3. The term is racing along and we are already at the beginning of Week 4!
In Week 2, Leonora District High School celebrated NAIDOC week. Students, staff and the community participated in a range of different activities. On Monday we commenced the week with an opening ceremony. Lakeisha did a fantastic job introducing the agenda for the week and addressing to students about what NAIDOC is all about. The whole school gathered together to parade through the town, escorted by our local police. We then had lunch in the town park kindly provided by Centrecare. Thank you to the Leonora Shire for allowing us to use the town park to host our lunch. It was a very successful start to the week and I really appreciate having so many members of our community come along to celebrate with us.
Talbot Muir and Nanny Di also came in during the week to talk to students about the stories and some history of the area. Our students thoroughly enjoyed hearing these captivating stories so thank you to both of you for taking the time to come in.
This term, Jade Maitland and Maurveen Muir have been working on a mural in the school and we look forward to its completion in the near future. I really appreciate all the time and effort these ladies are putting in to helping our students improve our school environment with artistic flair and highlighting the cultural heritage of many of our students.
On Thursday, students participated in a range of fun activities including beading, wool art, stone painting and storytelling. Angeletta Simpson from Meedac also came along to help us with the activities involved.
On Friday we ended the week with an assembly where classes shared some of the songs and information they learnt for NAIDOC. Gail Brownley and Cheryl Cotterill sang us some songs in Wangkatha. Thank you to you both – we loved hearing your songs and I hope that you will come along again sometime. Our shared lunch was a banquet; thank you to the parents who brought food to share. National Tree Day was also on Friday the 28th. Amanda Rukuwai Donnelly from St Barbras Mine and Dustin and Lisa McCreery from Chatfields Nursery brought along some young native tree saplings and helped our student’s plant lots of new trees around our school.
We also were privileged to have Michelle Leonard and Tainga Savage from Moorambilla Voices do some workshops with our students. Their primary purpose was to identify talent and we are very excited that we have the opportunity for three of our Secondary students to attend a camp in a few weeks’ time. I will announce our chosen students when the arrangements have been finalised.
On behalf of our staff and students here at Leonora District High School, I sincerely thank everyone who took time out of their week to come and support us and join in with our activities.
Kind regards,
Jennette Maxfield Principal
From the Principal
Attendance remains a priority at our
school. Unfortunately our bus has been
out of action since the beginning of the
Term. I’m pleased to say that repairs
are completed and we will commence
our morning bus run again soon. Thank
you to our AEIOs Cat and Di who have
been working hard to improve
attendance at our school and driving
the school car to pick up students each
morning to get them to school on time.
Each fortnight, students who have
attended school every day are
commended for their commitment for coming to school and are invited to have morning tea
with Miss Lynch, Miss Jennie and I. Congratulations to these wonderful students who have
achieved 100% attendance for weeks 1 and 2! It is so great to see more of our students
reaching 100% attendance.
When students attend school every day we are able to provide them with the programs that
are going to best support their learning. The table below shows you how quickly time adds up
when children are late or miss days of school. Please support your child and the school by
ensuring they come to school every day!
National Tree Day! On Friday the 28th of July LDHS had
National Tree Day.
Students and staff at LDHS spent time outside in the
sun planting a variety of native tree saplings and
seeds around the school for our environment. National Tree Day aims to inspire,
educate and recruit Australians each
year to actively care for our unique
land and create future generations
of committed environmental
custodians.
Dear parents,
This year we will be participating in the Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Through this program
we will be able to get new educational resources for our school/early learning centre – and all we
need you to do is shop for your groceries at Woolworths.
From Wednesday 26th July to Tuesday 19th September or while stock lasts, we are collecting
Woolworths Earn & Learn Stickers. You will get one Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker for
every $10 spent (excluding liquor, tobacco and gift cards). Place the Woolworths Earn & Learn
Sticker onto a Woolworths Earn & Learn Sticker Sheet and when it’s complete, the Sticker Sheet can
be dropped into the Collection Box here at the school or at your local Woolworths.
At the end of the promotion, we’ll be able to get some great new equipment. The range is extensive
and offers lots of items ideal for our students – including resources for Maths, English, Science and
some fantastic fun supplies for Arts & Craft, Sport and for our library. If you’d like to know more visit
