Please join us for our annual non-competitive high school jazz band& combo festival atOhioUniversity!Eachensemblewillreceivewrittencomments,andanimmediatepost-performanceworkshopwiththeclinicians.Participatinggroupsalsoperformasecondtimeduringthedayforthe public at the Baker Center Front Room Coffeehouse. Ensembles will receive participationcertificates. At least one clinic/masterclasswill be scheduled for your students during the daySaturday. 1. APPLICATIONDEADLINEisMonday,March27,2017.Applyonlineorsendattachedform.

2. ENTRYFEE:$125foroneensemble;$50foreachadditionalensembleperschool.PleasemakecheckspayabletoOHIOUNIVERSITYSCHOOLOFMUSIC.

3. SATURDAY “ROAD MAP”. An OHIO student will meet and guide all ensembles from arrival to theconclusionoftheiractivitiesperformanceandclinic.

4. PLEASE LIMIT SELECTIONS TO THREE PIECES! Each group should performworks in a variety of styles(swing,ballad,funk,Latin,etc.).

5. SATURDAYPOST-PERFORMANCEACTIVITIES:• Eachensemblewillreceiveanimmediateclinicaftertheirperformance.• EnsembleshavetheoptionofasecondperformanceintheBakerCenterFrontRoomcoffeehouse.• Various activities will take place throughout the day, including a Nadje Noordhuis jazz

clinic/masterclass(timeTBA).

6. EQUIPMENTSTORAGE: Storage space for school/personalequipmentwillbeprovided. However,OhioUniversityisnotliableforanyschoolorstudentequipment.

7. COMMENTSHEETS:Allensembleswillreceivewrittencommentsandacertificateforparticipation.Theemphasisisuponeducation.Theclinicians’commentswillbemailedtoeachensemble.

8. EQUIPMENT: OhioUniversitywill provide all equipment (stands, amps, drums, percussion, keyboards,etc.)inwarmupandperformancerooms.Drummersmayusetheirowncymbals,snaredrum,andbassdrumpedal.Guardedstoragespaceofschool/personalequipmentwillbeprovided.

Combiningcinematicsweep,transportiveemotion,andrichmelodicgrandeur,Australian-borntrumpeter/composerNadjeNoordhuispossessesoneofthemostunforgettablylyricalvoicesinmodernmusic.Herdeeply-felt,clariontoneandevocativecompositionalgiftmeldclassicalrigor,jazzexpression,andworldmusicaccentsintoasoundthatisdistinctivelyherown.

Noordhuis’duoalbumwithAustralianpianist/composerLukeHoward,“TenSails”featurestenexquisiteminiaturesrecordedinaBerlinapartmentinthesummerof2014.Herlong-awaitedself-titleddebutwasreleasedin2012onLittleMysteryRecords.Featuringthestellarline-upofviolinistSaraCaswell,pianistGeoffreyKeezer,bassistJoeMartinanddrummerObedCalvaire,withappearancesbypercussionistJamesShippandclassicalguitaristRupertBoyd,therecordingisaluxuriousautobiographyinmusic.Composedoverthecourseofadecade,thealbum’seightsongsincorporategorgeousmelodies,lushromanticism,vibrantimprovisation,andinfluencesrangingfromPatMethenytoIrishfolksongstotangotofilmscores.

Noordhuisperformsregularlywithseveralbigbands,includingtheMariaSchneiderOrchestra,DarcyJamesArgue’sSecretSociety,theDivaJazzOrchestra,andKyleSaulnier’sAwakeningOrchestra.ShealsoperformswithRudyRoyston303,andtheAnatCohenTentet.ShehasrecentlyrecordedforSting,andfortheHamiltonmusicalbreakoutstar,LeslieOdomJr.

Noordhuis’journeyhastakenherfromayouthspentstudyingclassicalmusicinhernativeAustraliatoaheadlongdiveintotheworldofjazzthathasearnedheracclaiminthemusic’smecca,NewYork.Shewasoneoftensemi-finalistsinthe2007TheloniousMonkInternationalJazzTrumpetCompetitionandwasselectedasaCarnegieHallYoungArtisttoundertakeaweeklongresidencywithtrumpetgreatDaveDouglasin2010.Alsoin2007,sheattendedaneclecticresidencyattheOmiInternationalArtsCenterinupstateNewYork,wheresheforgedmusicalandpersonalbondswithsinger-songwriters,aSouthAfricanminimalistcomposer,anIrishflutist,aFrenchflamencoguitarist,andatrombonistexperimentingwithelectronicmusic.

Asacomposer,NoordhuishasbeencommissionedbytheSydney-basedBaroqueensembleThoroughBassandthenewmusicensembleExhAust,andwasawardedasmallensemblecommissionatthe2009FestivalofNewTrumpetMusic(FONT).ShehasalsoarrangedasuiteoftraditionalPortugueseFadosongsforalargebandandcomposedforGlass+Brass,whichfeaturedexploratorymusicperformedonAustralianglassinstruments.

HerpenchantforwritingmusicthatconjuresvividimagerymakesNoordhuisideallysuitedforcomposinginvisualmedia.Shecomposedalivescorefortheaward-winningfilmTheProjectionist,performedatthe2005NewYorkForeignExchangeFilmFestival,aswellasasuiteaccompanyingananimatedslideshowofstreetscapephotography.

BorninSydney,Australiain1977,Noordhuishashadalifelongalthoughrockyrelationshipwithmusic.ShestartedplayingclassicalpianoattwoyearsoldandenteredtheYamahaMusicSchoolatthree.Returningfromafamilyvacationattheageofseven,shewasshockedtodiscoverthatherlong-timepianoteacherandhertrumpet-playerhusbandhadbeenkilledinacaraccident.Askedtochooseabandinstrumentinthethirdgrade,shepickedupthetrumpetinhishonor.

Sheattendedaseriesofmusically-orientedschools,butbrieflygaveupplayingaltogethertoearnadegreeinsoundengineeringandmulti-media.Findinglittleopportunityineitherfieldaftergraduation,shewasinspiredbyMilesDavis’landmarkKindofBluetomovetoMelbourneandstudyjazzimprovisationattheVictorianCollegeoftheArts,whereshegraduatedwithHonors.WhileattendingasummerjazzworkshopattheConservatoriumofAmsterdam,shewasinvitedbyavisitingfacultymembertofurtherherstudiesattheprestigiousManhattanSchoolofMusic.NoordhuisrelocatedtoNewYorkin2003andcompletedherMasters,studyingtrumpetwithLaurieFrinkandcompositionwithLudmillaUlehla.
