The Woodlands is a nonprofit human

services organization dedicated to

enriching the lives of children, teens and

adults with disabilities and chronic illness.

Our work is designed to strengthen and

support individuals and groups in five

main areas: socialization, recreation,

environment, culture and spirituality.

Activities are held year-round at the

beautiful, 52-acre, fully accessible facility

in Bradford Woods, Pennsylvania. Our

signature programs focus on art, music,

recreation, fitness and transitional living.

The Woodlands has been enriching lives

for more than a decade, and now serves

thousands of participants per year.

Dear Friends,

In the two years I have served as the Executive Director of The Woodlands, staff

has heard me say many times that I love a good story. Stories help us learn—

new information, facts about people, places, and experiences. Stories are a way

for us to explain a little bit about ourselves and help to understand others.

I recall a story told to me one day last year by a participant’s father. He was

talking about the equipment he needed to purchase for his daughter and that,

often times, when he purchases a piece of adapted equipment, he has to fur-

ther adapt it to fit his daughter’s needs. It made me realize that we don’t always

know the baseline for our participants—the extent to which adjustments and

accommodations must be made.

As staff, it is important that we make the time to ask for and listen to these sto-

ries because they paint the picture, teach us about those we serve, and help

us to relate. While our organizational goals are important, and help to guide

our work, it is the stories we hear that will help us further our understanding of

The Woodlands’ mission to enrich the lives of those we serve.

So as we move forward with plans for the future—improvements to the current

campus, growth in programming and related partnerships, and the develop-

ment of the adjacent property—we will continue to listen to, and even seek

out, the stories.
