If 2017 had a theme, it was growth! We broke ground on an $8.25 million expansion and completed construction in 10 months. In 2018, we will be able to care for 73 families each night.

Included in the expansion was the renovation of our existing House to better serve our families. The expansion includes an additional 33 guest suites, an indoor play area, four living rooms, a laundry room on the second and third fl oors, an exercise room, a meditation and refl ection room, an outdoor playground and best of all, a dining room in which all of our families can come together and suppot each other.

That growth also included the addition of a Ronald McDonald Family Room at UAB Women & Infants Center that includes three sleeping rooms. Along with a light snack, families of RNICU and Continuing Care Nursery patients can use laundry facilities and watch TV in comfortable chairs just steps from the crib of their newborn.

We helped more families than ever through our three programs. This was all made possible by our generous donors, tireless volunteers and community partners.

Thank you to every person who helped keep families together and near to the medical care they need so much.

Gratefully,

OUR CHAPTER

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Alabama is an independent, nonprofi t 501(c)(3) organization that provides comfort and care to the whole family whenthey must travel far from home to seek medical care for their sick or injured child.

The charity envisions a community where families never confront their challenges alone but instead fi nd comfort, encouragement and support in their quest for healing, happiness and growth.

Each night, we care for 41 families at our Ronald McDonald House, located just one block from Children’s of Alabama and UAB Hospital. The Ronald McDonald Family Room at DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa provides respite for families whose children are cared for on the pediatric unit and NICU. And our Happy Wheels Cart brings the hospitality and warmth of our charity to families waiting for care at two of the clinics located within Children’s of Alabama.

OUR COVER FAMILY

Ashley Harris gave birth to twin girls in May 2017. Sadly, one of her baby girls passed away, devastating the family. But Ashley says that through the help of her husband, hospital staff and the Ronald McDonald House, she found the strength within to fi ght for her surviving twin, E’mari.

Ashley says the House enabled her to keep her family unit together. And because they were all close to E’mari, feeding her, holding her and talking to her, Ashley says it gave her baby “courage to keep fi ghting, to not give up.”

“To know that there is a place like the Ronald McDonald House brings me so much joy and happiness because it allows me and other parents to be close to their child in the hospital,” she said.

RMHCA ExpansionIn March 2017, RMHCA broke ground on a 28,543-square-foot addition to the existing Ronald McDonald House.

The Max and Lorayne Cooper East Wing was the product of so much eff ort and would not have been possible without the community. Focus groups of donors, volunteers and guest families helped shape the amenities within the expansion. RMHCA extends its heartfelt gratitude to every individual and organization who committed to our $8.25 million Healing Together Capital Campaign.

The charity also began renovations (top left) on an existing space within UAB Women and Infants Center Continuing Care Nursery to transform it into a Ronald McDonald Family Room where RNICU parents could fi nd respite without having to leave the hospital.

Each of these projects offi cially opened in January 2018.

In 2017, the Ronald McDonald House provided 896 family stays for 618 families, many of whom traveled to Birmingham more than once to seek medical care for their child.

This unique room provides a quiet area for parents to rest and take a break while their child is in the hospital.

Located within the pediatric unit and steps from the NICU, the Ronald McDonald Family Room keeps the family unit together. Research also shows that being close helps parents communi-cate better with doctors and nurses.

The Tuscaloosa community is generously involved in making sure the family room is stocked with supplies.

Families visited 162 times to rest and relax. Here are some of the most popular amenities:

73 snack breaks

68 rounds of play time

Events with a PurposeEvents with a PurposeMore than 1,000 supporters attended our 3 Signature Events in 2017, which

include Red Shoe Run, the Ronald McDonald House Classic Golf

Tournament and Heart of the House Gala (pictured along the bottom of this

Dozens more hosted additional Community Events to fund our mission, including the Junior Board’s Red Stiletto Party and Sweet Home Brews (left) and

the Student Leadership Council’s annual Bowl-a-palooza (right).

These events aren’t just a great time and opportunity to share RMHCA’s

mission. In 2017, the combined Signature and Community Events

helped meet 30% of our annual operating budget!

In 2017, we began construction on a three-story, 28,543-square-foot expansion to our existing Ronald McDonald House.

The $8.25 million Max and Lorayne Cooper East Wing became a reality thanks to the generosity of our 2015 Capital Campaign donors and hard work of our Healing Together Campaign Leadership.

We off er our deepest gratitude to every person who made this expansion possible.

With the growth of our House and expansion of existing programs, our annual operating budget will grow in 2018 from $1.8 million to $2.2 million. We are proud to share that our staff was able to exceed our 2017 annual operating goal, making for a bright 2018.

RMHCA receives no federal or state grants. The community’s generosity powers our charity.

Approximately 80% of our annual $1.8 million operating budget is met thanks to individual and corporate doations.

100% of a donation made directly to RMHCA remains in Birmingham to support families served through our programs.
