Transforming Lives, One Animal At A Time.

Dear Friends,

At North Country Animal League we do our best each day to help make Vermont a place where every animal receives the love they deserve. For over 24 years, NCAL has provided second chances to thousands of homeless, lost and abandoned animals. Throughout our history, the shelter has evolved from its modest beginning in a small building next to the Morrisville transfer station to our current facility where we are approaching our 15th anniversary this spring. In a quarter century the shelter has undergone incredible growth, and we are indebted to the dedication and unwavering support of our friends who share our vision and belief in the work that we do.

As we look to the future, it’s important that we continue to evolve as an organization so that we can best meet the changing needs of our community and constituents. This is a period of significant and positive transformation for NCAL. Over the past year, our leadership team and staff have put a lot of thought, time and energy into preparing for transition and organizational change. Improvements to shelter operations, procedures and staff structure have allowed us to improve the quality of how we deliver these services and enhance our communications, animal behavior, outreach and fundraising programs. With vital input from our community, we have worked to modify our adoption process to eliminate barriers to adoption and improve our accessibility by the public. We are proud of our collaboration with animal shelters and organizations throughout Vermont in which we work together to confront the issues that imperil animals in our state. These are just a few examples of the work that we’re doing to ensure that community members and at-risk animals have access to the highest-quality services in their time of need.

We cannot help but look to the future with excitement to see these transformations come to fruition. All of these efforts are propelled by the extraordinary love and support shown by our friends and community. On behalf of the entire NCAL team, we wish to express our sincere thanks for your commitment to the work that we do and for your steadfast generosity. Engaging with our Community

60 dogs and owners trained through NCAL’s training classes

1,152 hours contributed by NCAL volunteers

3,600 unique visitors at the shelter

120 students from 8 schools toured the shelter

119 children enrolled in the Reading Buddies Program

6 schools visited by NCAL animals

110 senior citizens visited by NCAL dogs

NCAL animals help promote compassion through school visits and the Reading Buddies Program. In 2017, NCAL cats and dogs served over 240 children in our community.

“I started volunteering at NCAL in 2012. My mom had passed away the previous year, and I had been struggling to find happiness and meaning in my life. I knew dogs brought memore joy than anything else, so I began seeking ways tosurround myself with them. I had always been passionateabout photographing dogs, and I had a feeling that donatingmy skill to NCAL would help me feel better. For the first fewyears, I volunteered weekly and photographed almost everyanimal that came through the doors. My photo shoots werefull of laughter, fun, patience, and empathy; and they werehelping the animals to get adopted! It was a win-win situation. I now get to NCAL as often as I can, and my visits are always the highlight of my week. I love being a part of a positive-minded organization and feel so grateful to the NCALcommunity (especially the amazing staff members who helped with photo shoots over the years) for giving me theopportunity to heal myself through volunteering.”

Turning Lessons into OpportunitiesIn 2017, NCAL’s valued team of volunteers logged in almost 1,200 hours walking dogs, housekeeping, and socializing cats, among other activities. However, we were not always able to delegate responsibilities to their optimum capacities. Recognizing this, well-defined roles have been established and our newly-revised volunteer program launches this spring. As a result, our volunteers will feel a sense of ownership, make tangible differences and continue to be important ambassadors to our cause.

a happy, healthy life full of love and free of pain and

Having owned animals her whole life, Connie has a thorough understanding of the nuances of animal health, behavior, and nursing care. She enjoys using her knowledge and training to help shelter animals that come through NCAL, while also helping to maximize financial efficiency in veterinary care, allowing NCAL’s resources to reach more animals in need.

NCAL’s Spay/Neuter FundEach year, over 7 million animals enter overcrowded shelters

in the United States. A stray cat and her litter of kittens have the potential to produce over 420,000 cats in only 6 years.

NCAL’s Spay/Neuter Fund assures that every cat and dog that passes through our doors is spayed or neutered. Last year, 206 animals were supported by our Spay/Neuter Fund and with the increase in animals that we are serving, we expect this number to greatly increase in 2018. Please consider a gift to NCAL’s Spay/Neuter Fund today and help us reduce the number of homeless pets in Vermont.

Medical CareThanks to our dedicated medical team, all animals receive

spay/neuter, vaccinations, deworming, heartworm and flea preventative, microchipping, as well as any additional medical care including surgeries and dental work, that are necessary to help ensure a successful adoption.
