Dear Neighbors: When children face health and hunger issues, it robs them of the simple joys of childhood. At the Joy in Childhood Foundation®, our goal is to help kids feel like kids, even on their most difficult days.
Whether it’s sending kids home from school with food-filled backpacks or giving young patients superhero hospital gowns to remind them of their strength, we know that every moment matters. In 2017, we had lots of great moments. A few that stand out include:
• $5.3 million given to over 200 organizations focused on children’s health and hunger relief • 351,455 meals packed for children and families and 4,604 hours volunteered during the Week of Joy• 10,000 Starlight Gowns delivered to children in local hospitals
Within this report, you will find many more examples of the defining moments that contributed to the impact our Foundation is having across the country. Most importantly, you will be reminded that every grant, every volunteer hour and every dollar raised collectively brought joy to kids when they needed it most.
To all our franchise partners, employees, corporate donors and customers, thank you for supporting us every step of the way and being part of this joy filled work.
With joy,
Karen RaskopfCo-Chair, Joy in Childhood FoundationDunkin’ Brands

YOU BRING JOYOur Dunkin’ Donuts & Baskin-Robbins franchisees, Dunkin’ Brands’ employees and Vendor Partners come from each of our eight Regional Chapters to raise funds and volunteer in local communities, putting a face to our cause in neighborhoods nationwide. Thank you for every moment of impact in 2017!
Constantine (Gus) Scrivanos, Dunkin’ Donuts owner/operator: In his communities, he generously supports local charities, from making donations to a family shelter to purchasing computers for a middle school.
Angie Weir, Operations, West Coast Chapter: Motivated the Baskin-Robbins stores in her Region to lead the nation during the Community Cups® fundraiser.
Cathy Chavenet, Field Marketing, Mid-Atlantic Chapter: Events Cathy organized in her region have raised an impressive $4.25 million since 2007.
Shelley Misiph, Co-Chair Brand Central Chapter: Dedicated to spreading joy by rallying volunteers, organizing events and helping direct $400,000 in grants since 2010.
4
Annie Hunter, Baskin-Robbins owner/operator: A fundraising leader in her community and a brand ambassador for the Food Bank of the Rockies. Annie helped pack food for 2,000 children and families during the Week of Joy.
Rich Products associates came together in March 2017 at their HQ in Buffalo, NY, to volunteer for the Food Bank of Western NY and presented a grant from the Joy in Childhood Foundation for $10,000. Special thanks to the Rich Family Foundation which has supported the Foundation since 2011 and in 2017 committed support through 2021.

How Our Partnership Brings Joy:
Starlight Gowns, giving kids in hospitals high-quality, comfortable and brightly-colored gowns to wear while undergoing treatment.
Starlight Sites, transforming sterile hospital environments into brighter and happier spaces to support healing and inspire kids to have fun.
PARTNERSHIPSIn 2017 we made a $3 million, multi-year commitment to two national charities – Starlight Children’s Foundation and Feeding America®.
Starlight Children’s Foundation was announced as the Joy in Childhood Foundation’s newest national partner this year. Together, we will empower and brighten the lives of millions of hospitalized children in local communities.
Javaze Hart and her twelve-year-old son Keith celebrate our grant to build a new family kitchen at La Rabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago. “My son likes to eat and I’m a mom that likes to cook,” said Javaze. “Having a kitchen that is functional for Keith [who relies on his wheelchair] is a big deal when we are basically living at the hospital for extended periods of time.”
6
How Our Partnership Brings Joy:
Supporting local food banks to feed children and families facing hunger. This includes supporting the School Pantry and BackPack Program, which provides food to children after school, on weekends and during school vacations when other resources are not available.
The Joy in Childhood Foundation marks its 10th anniversary partnering with Feeding America®. In 2017 alone, we provided more than 2.4 million pounds of food to children and families nationwide.
From major national partner commitments with Feeding America® and Starlight Children’s Foundation to over 120 events directly bringing joy to children, there were many defining moments that furthered our mission.

“Nothing compares to bringing a smile to a child’s face who has a daily fight on their hands. It is heartwarming to watch them put on the gowns and literally feel like they are superheroes.”
Mark Norman, Baskin-Robbins Franchisee
Noah, a 7-year-old patient at Novant Health’s Hemby Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, strikes a pose during a Superhero fashion show held during a Day of Joy event.
EVENTSThe Joy in Childhood Foundation, franchisees and employees hosted Day of Joy events to celebrate organizations that bring joy to kids when they need it most. Athletes, mascots, government leaders and media made the days even brighter by helping deliver 10,000 Starlight Gowns at 40 children’s hospitals.
New York Rangers’ Ryan McDonagh and New York Yankees’ Tyler Austin teamed up with us for a Day of Joy, delivering Starlight Gowns to kids at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
Gov. Gina Raimondo with a brave patient at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, RI.

“Our restaurant teams are passionate about fundraising. When our guests see
how much our team genuinely cares about bringing joy to children in need, they are
eager to help.” Mark Cafua, Dunkin’ Donuts Franchisee. His restaurants
raised the most funds in the system during this year’s Community Cups national fundraiser.
National Community Cups & Cones in-store fundraisers set a

CHILDREN’S HUNGER RELIEFIn America, 1 in 6 children may not know where they will get their next meal. This impacts their ability to learn, grow and experience joy. We supported more than 110 regional organizations to help provide meals to children and families, so kids could have the energy to do the everyday things that bring them joy.
In Raleigh, NC, our grant supporting Mobile Tastiness Machine, an Inter-Faith Food Shuttle program, delivered fresh and hot dinners to kids in low-income neighborhoods during the summer months.
The Joy in Childhood Foundation provided more than 1,000 backpacks
of food to kids battling hunger through the Food Bank of Iowa.
“Our local grant to Bread of Life in Malden, MA funded its Motel Meals program, which provided groceries and cooked dinners directly to homeless families sheltered in motels
every week.”

CHILDREN’S HEALTH We’re thankful for the 81 local organizations we supported to bring joyful moments to kids facing health issues. Together, we tackled hospital boredom through bedside story time, art and music, created magical experiences for the whole family and brightened kids’ lives even on the toughest days.
Marcus was the first baby to receive his new books as part of the Bedside Book Club program at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. The Joy in Childhood Foundation’s grant helped supply 246 books to bring the joy of story time to children in the Intensive Care Nursery.
“ It is a privilege to bring kids joy. And to be able to support Bert’s Big Adventure and send critically ill children and their families to Disney World for five days is nothing short of magical.”
Stephen Attard, Dunkin’ Donuts Franchisee, Greater Atlanta Area
Dunkin’ Brands team members brought joy to the tarmac for pediatric patients by participating in a Dream Flight Day in Norwood, MA. This was part of a Foundation grant to Above the Clouds, an organization giving kids facing serious health issues an amazing opportunity to co-pilot a small airplane.

"Even though CHOP sees and supports some of the sickest kids, the important thing to remember is that they are still kids.
