FOOD, which is one of the foundations of our business model and makes us understand that everything is interconnected: the one who sows, the one who transforms, the one who sells and the one who consumes. In the various relationships that we have with food, we evoke empathy for the other and for the environment that we live in, and these connections have a power to transform society.

THE AWARENESS THAT WE LEARN THROUGHOUT LIFE. We believe that the more people learn, especially about what they like, the greater is the will to grow and develop in their personal and professional lives and in relationships. Knowing more about ourselves gives us the power to find our calling, to choose what we want and to work with passion. Knowing more about the world helps us understand what our role in society is and thus act and coexist better with one another.

IMPLEMENTATION OF THE REVIEW OF THIS NEW WAY OF OPERATING IS STILL JUST BEGINNING.

For 2018, this work continues with important challenges, such as that of strengthening all existing initiatives and structuring some programs – for example, volunteering that covers not just the headquarters, but the more than 900 GPA stores throughout Brazil, respecting the needs and particularities of each brand and of the regions where they are located.

TO AWAKEN WORK BY VOCATION

We want to increase the educational possibilities of citizens so that they can follow their callings. We therefore provide more than technical, vocational courses or directions for business. We also provide people with the means for them to develop themselves, to find what they like to do and to be able to generate income with this. We organize our work according to the social vocation and particularities of each GPA business.

Many of the more than 120 stores of Assaí Atacadista, spread throughout 18 Brazilian states, are set up in places distant from the big urban centers. Approximately 50% of the customers of such stores are small local traders, such as owners of pizzerias, pastry shops and grocery stores or people who work at home making cakes and/or sweets to order. They are part of a group that is important to the Brazilian economy: that ofthe small and medium entrepreneur and that of the freelancer.

To help these professionals develop skills and acquire knowledge about the food sector that will contribute to the success of their businesses,

Assaí, in partnership with the GPA Institute, created the Academia Assaí Bons Negócios [Assaí Good Business Academy], which was born as a project resulting from our purpose.

Launched in October 2017 throughout Brazil, with onsite activations in some stores of São Paulo, Mato Grosso and Pará, the Assaí Good Business Academy offers training, face-to-face workshops and an online class platform with 100% free content.

INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF THE SOCIETY, O NATA is a high school integrated with technical education that provides the Baking & Confection and Milk & Dairy Products courses and trains young technicians specialized in food to work in industries, retail chains and quality control.

One of the programs that transformed this idea into a reality is the Núcleo Avançado de Tecnologia em Alimentos (NATA) [Advanced Food Technology Center], located at Colégio Estadual Comendador Valentim dos Santos Diniz, in São Gonçalo (RJ). It was created in 2009, in a partnership between the GPA Institute, the State Secretariat of Education and the Secretariat of Farming and Livestock of Rio de Janeiro.

• Traineeship – A prerequisite to obtain the diploma in the courses. Each student must complete 120 hours of traineeship in the 3rd year of high school. The activities include technical visits, workshops and lectures. They must also undergo a process of learning at GPA stores or in other companies, with at least 90 hours of practice.

• Knowledge improvement exchange – Seven students who had already graduated were given an exchange conducted in the São Paulo – Minas Gerais axis to know the food culture and trends of the dairy products and bakery markets. In São Paulo, they visited the Municipal Market, ice-cream shops, Education Centers and the GPA headquarters. In Minas, they went to farms and artisan cheese producers.

Pão de Açúcar’s social actions are being designed to encourage the production chain of healthy and sustainable foods and are scheduled for 2018. Our focus will be:

• strengthen the management and quality capacity of small producers, training and strengthening healthy and sustainable businesses and helping in the structuring of producers and their chains for access to the market;

• promote innovative models, supporting production models in the area of healthy and sustainable food.

We invited customers and employees to donate Easter eggs and chocolates to the partner institutions in our stores. The chocolates were delivered to thousands beneficiaries of these organizations. On the day of the action, in April, the stores received volunteers from GPA and NGOs to help in the collection and distribution of the eggs.

WINTER CLOTHING

CAMPAIGN IN 2017

We promoted, in partnership with the Cruz Vermelha [Red Cross] and Rotary, our clothes and winter clothes collection campaign. Between May and June, customers of Pão de Açúcar, Extra and Assaí placed their donations in specific places at the stores. The clothes were collected by the institutions and destined to various social actions.

To complement the Winter Clothing Campaign, the Finlandek brand, exclusive for home products, gave a discount voucher in the purchase of a new blanket to customers and employees who donated a blanket or duvet in good state at Extra Hiper and Pão de Açúcar stores.

SOLIDARITY DAY

Held for the fifth consecutive year, the Solidarity Day was special in 2017. In addition to the record collection, we organized the campaign in a different way, with greater involvement of the stores and employees. The GPA Institute gave each store autonomy to choose the beneficiary institutions from their surroundings. Each brand was also able to adapt the communication material according to its language.

Volunteers of partner institutions and GPA employees helped to increase the awareness of customers in the organization of foods donated and in the delivery of these foods to the beneficiaries.

This initiative closed the year 2017 with highlight. The Solidarity Day is the big event promoted in all GPA stores in December. Customers and employees donated foods of the basic basket to social institutions from all over Brazil.

DIGITAL SOLIDARITYOn visiting the site www.paodeacucar.com/amigosdobem, anyone can make the difference to an entire family. In this link, Pão do Açúcar, in partnership with the GPA Institute, created an online donation channel in which customers can help the Amigos do Bem project by buying basic food baskets.

There are three types of baskets. The following were donated from October to December 2017:

PARTNERSHIP WITH INSTITUTIONS FOR COLLECTION CAMPAIGN AT THE STOREThe GPA Institute holds campaigns in which customers and employees can donate foods and other items to social institutions. A long-standing partnership for these actions – since 2013 – is that with the NGO Amigos do Bem, which operates in Alagoas, Ceará and Pernambuco with educational, health, work and infrastructure projects.

WE SUPPORTED AMIGOS DO BEM IN THREE FRONTS:

• food collection campaigns in GPA stores. 700 kilos were collected in 2017;

• sale, in our stores, of some products made by the cooperatives that are benefited by the project, such as cashew nuts, reusable bags made with patchwork, etc.;

• creation of a page in the Pão de Açúcar site for online donation of food baskets.

THIS IS THE FIRST STEP. IN 2018, WE WILL EXPAND THE DONATION TO OTHER ORGANIZATIONS.

About a third of the entire agricultural production is wasted in Brazil. The losses occur from the harvest in the field to the table of the consumer*. To reduce food waste in GPA stores, we created, over 20 years ago, the Partnership Against Food Waste Program. We donate, to over 170 social institutions, excess fruits, legumes and vegetables that are not in ideal conditions of exposure at the stores, but that are still suitable for consumption.

MONITORING A GOOD CAUSEFrom October to December 2017, we made a partnership with the startup Connecting Food for a pilot project to monitor the donations of fruits, legumes and vegetables made in our stores. The data was collected through an application; and the participant NGOs were taught how to use the tool. The idea is for this project to help us more accurately control what is donated, in what quantity and to which institutions the donations are sent.

In 2017, after we identified in a survey that our employee’s engagement is a determinant factor in the customer’s decision to donate, we gave Pão de Açúcar’s checkout professionals the opportunity to choose the entities benefited by each regional store.

Arredondar [Round Up] is an initiative that encourages GPA’s customers to round up the cents of their cash purposes upwards, giving them to institutions that support educational and healthy food projects throughout the country. The Viva Bairro! Project was created in 2014 to strengthen the relationship between Extra stores with the surrounding community, valuing people and promoting actions that create positive impact on all. Viva Bairro! believes that changes take place by recovering the sense of community. People realize that they are part of something bigger and act from that vision. Their learning and their growth thus help the entire community to also develop.

In 2017, the project extended its operations to beyond the five initial pilot stores, in São Paulo and in Rio de Janeiro, and became present in all of Extra’s regional stores. In 2018, it will be extended to all stores of this brand.

To guarantee its consistency, we held workshops and periodical follow-up meetings with store managers, encouraging them to know their neighborhood and build some actions together with the community. There are several sociocultural activities in both public and private spaces, with collaboration and benefits shared by all who frequent there and wish to participate.

Under the proposal of “awaken callings, encourage talents”, the Music Program of the GPA Institute is divided into two pillars: Music Course and Orchestra. Since its foundation, in 1999, this initiative has contributed toward awaken the musical calling of over 15,000 young talents, aged 10 to 21 years. The program has been supported by the Cultural Incentive Act (Law no. 8313/1991) since 2013, which allows companies and individuals to donate part of their Income Tax due to this action.

In 2017, the Music Program opened enrollments for 262 new participants: 180 for Osasco and 82 for Santos.

MUSIC COURSE

These are free classes in musical instruments for students who arrive without any experience, using the Jaffé Method of Collective String Education.

JAFFÉ METHOD OF COLLECTIVE STRING

EDUCATION

Teaches students, youngsters aged 10 to 18 years, to play the violin, viola, double

bass and cello already in orchestra format right from the first class, without the need for prior knowledge and individual study.

This means that practice is always in group, thus evoking values like respect, teamwork,

discipline, concentration and logical thinking. The GPA Institute provides

all the instruments.

The youngsters who excel in the Music Course after two years of study are called to join the GPA Institute Orchestra, which makes several free presentations open to the public. The students remain in it until they complete 21 years, learning and specializing themselves with the maestro Daniel Misiuk and the teacher and arts director Renata Jaffé.

There are 18 years of Orchestra, with almost a thousand presentations throughout Brazil and in countries like Argentina, Italy, France and the United States, and audience of over 447,000 people.

CROSSING BORDERS

In October, there were two more international concerts, in Buenos Aires, in Argentina: at the Youth Orchestra Meet in Luna Park, on the 16th, and at Teatro Colón, on the 17th.

The GPA Institute Orchestra participated, in May 2017, in the Iguazú en Concierto, a mega music festival that unites young people from the world over in Porto Iguaçu, in the border between Brazil and Argentina. There were three presentations, the last of which was at the Final Grand Concert, at the Iguaçu National Park, with the waterfalls as background.

PROSPERAR

To apply for the scholarships at FGV, the candidates must have already passed the entrance exam or the National High School Exam (Enem) in one of the courses mentioned. After undergoing an assessment by GPA, with individual interview and proof of the requirements to secure the vacancy.

The aid is evaluated according to each student and can include full monthly dues, courseware, meals, transport and housing assistance for those who live outside the municipality of São Paulo. The GPA Institute also subsidizes a class of the prep course for FGV’s entrance exam for 30 students per year.

In this program, we offer university education of excellence through scholarships to students from all over Brazil with high potential and performance, but who lack the financial resources to have access to higher education. The scholarships are destined to undergraduate courses in Business Management or Public Administration at Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV).

My whole life I studied in public schools and I obtained my scholarship after two years of intercalating my studies for FGT with high school and fulltime technical education in information technology. Had I not obtained the scholarship, I would not have had the conditions to attend the course and I am certain that my education would not be the same. I also had the opportunity of attending a semester at HEC Paris, in France. The experience was incredible! I participated in a lecture with Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Peace prize, linked to the concept of microfinance. It was inspiring to see how a person who works in a bank can generate a tremendous social impact. My ideal is to learn as much as possible to contribute to the development of Brazil, either in the public or private sector, and to help others to do the same.”
