About the Center The primary focus of the Jackson Family Center for Ethics & Values is to cultivate awareness throughout the academic and surrounding communities of the importance and lifelong rewards of personal and professional integrity. In order to achieve its goals, the Jackson Center sponsors four cornerstones: the Jackson Scholars; the Ethics Fellow; the Visiting Ethicist; and our schedule of events and community outreach projects, aimed at improving awareness of current ethical issues and fostering inclusive conversations on them. In this, we aim to recognize and celebrate the rich history and example of Mary Emily and Nelson Jackson, and their family.

Mission Statement The mission of the Jackson Family Center for Ethics and Values is to create opportunities for open conversations about how ethics and values affect the individual, the university, the region and the world.

Vision Statement The vision of the Jackson Family Center for Ethics and Values is to inspire individuals to make ethical and value based decisions, and thus live lives of courage, compassion and integrity.

Women In Leadership and Philanthropy On February 7, seven Jackson Scholars – Emily Thibeault, Krystina Millar, Carlie Todd, Kaitlyn Dallis, Heather Wozniak, Jeannette Pryor, Yaicha Ocampo, and Shadaisha Hamilton – attended the Women in Leadership and Philanthropy (WIPL) conference at the Myrtle Beach Convention center. The seven current scholars were joined by recent Jackson Scholar graduates Kira Elton and Kaitlyn Powalie. We were proud to have three generations of Jackson Scholars representing the Jackson Center at the event. They were able to attend presentations from varying influential, local and national women. A variety of topics were discussed, ranging from effective involvement with philanthropic organizations in the Myrtle Beach area, to how to translate their skills and training in ethics and leadership to contexts beyond the college campus. Chicago Trip On September 8, 2016 the Jackson Scholars flew to Chicago for a weekend trip. The trip was guided by the center’s own Ethics Fellow, Dr. David Holiday and senior lecturer Eva Kort.. Nine Jackson Scholars joined them. Students commented that what they appreciated most about this trip was meeting with University of Chicago Human Rights Interns to talk about their work on social justice issues, visiting the Art Institute and touring the University of Chicago. Overall, students were enriched by their experiences in Chicago and were grateful to the Jackson Family for their continued support in providing such experiences. Ethics and Leadership Academy The annual Ethics and Leadership Academy took place on January 30, February 6, and February 13. Current Jackson Scholars welcomed rising sixth graders from seven local middle schools to campus. This year’s theme was sustainability. The topics of discussion were well received by the students. On February 6, guest speaker, Professor Till Hahnebuth from the Department of Marine Science presented to the students. On February 13 students enjoyed a campus tour and received certificates for the participation in the Ethics and Leadership Academy Program.
