A message from the Program Manager

I continue to be inspired by the dedication and enthusiasm of YTP students, staff, tutors, and donors. In 2017, every tutoring center visit showed me hard working students, dedicated tutors, and a nurturing and encouraging environment. I was inspired by the amazing growth in our corps of volunteer tutors (95 more than in 2016), which allowed us to serve a growing number of YTP students (63 more than in 2016). I am grateful for our financial supporters who increased contributions to help us serve this larger number and keep up with rising costs. Thank you all for keeping YTP going, now for 26 years. In this report you’ll see the impressive statistics for this thriving program.

The hard-working YTP team (pictured here) had another great year supporting students from low-income and recent immigrant families, addressing the educational inequity they have experienced. In addition to organizing and supporting tutoring sessions, Center Supervisors assisted parents in navigating school systems, and worked with parents and teachers to provide a network of support for their developing youth. The YTP team continues to be devoted to helping students in all grades work towards academic success. We are all inspired daily by the obstacles they overcome through their efforts, with the coaching and nurturing of their matched volunteers. Thank you for joining us on this journey to uplift youth in need. I look forward to working with you all towards continued success for YTP youth in 2018. I invite you all to join me for our annual Dream Big fundraising breakfast on Friday March 2nd, to be inspired by youth and “help their dreams take flight.”

Laura Nelson is a dedicated tutor at Lake Washington Apartments. She enjoys seeing her tutee every week and building a relationship with him while providing academic support. Being a part of YTP, Laura learned about the rich immigrant and refugee community and culture in Seattle. Tutoring provides her an easy and straight-forward way to give back to this community. Laura feels tutoring goes be-yond the student, impacting the family and community as a whole.

After hearing about YTP’s need for culturally significant and specific books, she made it her company’s next community building project. Laura’s company, Pacific Project Management and her colleagues donated over 180 books and games to YTP. Each Pacific Project Management employee selected and purchased books from a specially curated wish list for YTP students. They even had an office party to label the books with reading codes, so they were ready to go at the centers. The students really appreciated receiving brand new books bought specifically for
