MarkJ.TomishimaistheHeadoftheSKIStemCellResearchFacility,partoftheCenterforStemCellBiologyandtheDevelopmentalBiologyProgramatSloanKetteringInstituteinNewYorkCity.Dr.TomishimaearnedhisPh.D.atPrincetonUniversitywherehestudiedthemovementofalpha-herpesvirusesthroughneurons.Atthetime,thisworkrequiredprimaryneuronculturethatlimitedthroughput.AfterearninghisPh.D.,heperformedpostdoctoralworkwithLorenzStuderatSloanKetteringwherehelearnedtoconvertpluripotentstemcellstounlimitedamountsofneurons,bypassingtheneedfortheprimaryculture.IntheStuderLab,Dr.Tomishimapioneeredtheuseofbacterialartificialchromosomesthatwereusedtopurifypopulationsofneuralcells.Suchpurifiedpopulationsareusefulinunderstandingthetranscriptomeofdifferentneuralcellpopulations,andallowedfortransplantationofdifferentstagesofESC-derivedneuralcellsintoanimalmodelsof
