Notes and Terms

Some numbers in this Factbook differ slightly from numbers in previous Factbooks due

to retroactive changes in historical records.

Indigenous Students: UFV does not require students to declare their status. On their

application form, students may elect to self-declare as Aboriginal, First nations, Métis, or

Inuit.

Academic Year: Sept 1 to August 31 of the following year.

Age: As of July 1 of the fiscal year.

Credential “None”: A program that does not grant a UFV credential upon graduation.

Continuing Education (CE): Non-academic and non-trades programs or courses.

Chandigarh/Domestic/International: This is based on country of the UFV campus and the

type of fees a student pays in the given fiscal year. If a student pays international fees for

part of a given fiscal period, they are counted as international. Chandigarh students pay a

domestic fee.

Fiscal Year: Unless otherwise stated, all data is for fiscal year, which is April 1 to March

31 of the following year.

FTE: Full Time Equivalent student.

Full Time/Part Time (FT/PT): A student is full time if the student counts for at least 0.6

of an FTE, otherwise they are part time.

Graduate: A student who graduates from a program. A student may be granted multiple

credentials in a given academic year.

Headcount: A student who takes at least one course in a fiscal year.

Location: Based on mailing address.

New Student: No previous UFV course registration activity.

Registration: A single student enrolment in a credit level or trades course.

Returning Student: Has previous UFV course registration activity.

Self-declared: Indigenous students at UFV voluntarily disclose their status.

Unduplicated headcount: Each student is counted only once; a student is not counted as a

member of multiple groups.

Section 9: Research and Compliance

At UFV, teaching and research are intimately related. Provost & VP Academic Eric Davis has

said “Creating opportunities for undergraduate research is one of UFV’s highest priorities.” One

way we do this is by supporting established and novice faculty researchers in their endeavours.

They bring their excitement for research to the classroom, and engage students as research

assistants and co-authors on publications. We believe that students who are provided with

experiential learning enjoy greater success in their education and future careers. We know that

having research experience has a high impact on student learning.

26% increase in students participating in

Student Research Day over last year, rising

from 117 to 147 participants!

7% more research assistants were hired

through the Career Centre work study

program.

78 work-study research assistantships were

offered.

Researchers hired an additional 104 student

researchers with grant and contract funding.

25 Undergraduate Research Excellence

awards totaling $25,750 were presented –

the highest numbers to date!

31% more students were provided travel

funding to present at professional
