  • PRESIDENT’S

MessageJunior League volunteers never cease to amaze with their time and dedication to our mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving our community. Harnessing our volunteer talents is our greatest asset and one of many factors that makes us unique and the member experience so special.

Thanks to our members, staff, community and supporters! The 2017-2018 year was filled with so many accomplishments. A small sampling includes:

    • Supported 167 new members and welcomed them to the League

    • Hosted more than 70 community agencies at our open house to talk aboutopportunities to partner

    • Celebrated the 30th Annual Holiday Mart, launched the inaugural C3KCCommunity Leadership Development Summit and shined with Take Five at a newvenue and a new theme

    • Provided volunteers and funds to five community agencies, continued to build onthe success of our Signature programs and identified opportunities to expand in2018-2019

    • Distributed the first grants from the Legacy Fund

I am so grateful for the freedom the League provides for members to continue personal development, gain new skills, make friends and connect with our community. Kansas City is our neighborhood and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of what makes it such a wonderful place.

    Best wishes,

    Jen Johnson, President 2017-2018

    FOCUS AREA: WOMEN AND CHILDREN

ABUSE AND NEGLECTHope and Healing KitsWomen and children often arrive at a domestic violence shelter with nothing but the clothes on their backs. League members assemble kits with basic needed items to ease new residents’ transitions from abusive situations. The committee also hosts fun days for mothers and children at the Rose Brooks shelter, our community partner.

CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENTHealthy U Family MealsOur program brings families together monthly to learn how to prepare low-cost, nutritious meals. League members create menus and cook with the families, serving more than 20 families with 40 children at each session. This year the JLKCMO is partnering with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Kansas City.

Healthy Living KCThe JLKCMO organizes and presents spring and fall Resource Fairs for residents in an urban corridor identified by the Urban Neighborhood Initiative. The fairs give residents access to vaccinations, dental screenings, health and wellness providers, groceries and other community resources.

WOMEN’S SELF-SUSTAINABILITYEmpower to SucceedThis program offers resources and training to help women become gain economic independence and become self-sufficient through sustained employment, in partnership with the Women’s Employment Network.

    LEAGUE SpotlightC3KC COMMUNITY

The League launched its newest fundraiser and community outreach program in 2017-2018. C3KC is a community leadership development summit designed to convene stakeholders from all community sectors so that together, we can find solutions to deeply entrenched and complex social issues. The JLKCMO, with more than 100 years of service to this community, brought its knowledge and history to convene this gathering. C3KC sought to reach the Kansas City community by providing engaging and informative speakers presenting on a variety of topics relating to voluntarism and improving the community. Attendees participated in workshops and attended panel discussions on a variety of topics.

The Community Engagement Fair boasted twenty different community nonprofit organizations, giving attendees an opportunity to see how these nonprofits work and what ways individuals or organizations can help.

C3KC honored Albert P. Mauro with the Branton/Hall Community Collaborator Award. This award recognizes an individual from the greater Kansas City area who has played an active role in civic engagement, leadership, fostering a spirit of service to others and promoting the spirit of collaboration for social good. The award lets the JLKCMO spotlight individuals who have worked to change Kansas City for the better.
