Our History: Established in 1924, with the help of the Wilkes-Barre Rotary Club and United Way of Wyoming Valley, WVCA has been making a diff erence in the lives of local families for 94 years. By addressing the developmental needs of children, and designing quality, state of the art pre-school educati on and therapeuti c programs, we have prepared thousands of children for a lifeti me of learning. WVCA is a formidable provider of early interventi on services and early childhood educati on for children birth to age six, by working to minimize and/or eliminate the eff ects of a disability through home and center-based programs. WVCA provides services to children with developmental delays, as well as typically developing children. We strive to help children develop to the fullest of their ability as they prepare to enter Kindergarten and beyond.

Our Vision: Wyoming Valley Children’s Associati on will establish the foundati on on which children will be accepted and celebrated for their uniqueness, and will be supported by families and the community to achieve an opti mal quality of life.

Our Mission: Wyoming Valley Children’s Associati on (WVCA)

provides the highest quality early childhood educati on to ensure the greatest developmental potenti al of ALL children in partnership with their

Growth – a word that encompasses this past year at Wyoming Valley Children’s Associati on (WVCA). We have seen growth in so many ways: the rising number of enrolled students, amount of fundraising dollars and, most importantly, the developmental progress seen in each unique child. As I refl ect on this past year, I am humbled by the dedicati on of our teachers, staff , volunteers and board members in helping us achieve a level of growth not seen in our organizati on in quite some ti me.

WVCA has a long history of serving children in the Wyoming Valley. Since 1924, we have been helping young children and their families achieve their goals – originally serving children with conditi ons like polio and rickets. As the years went by, we have grown and evolved to meet the needs of today’s children. We are proud to serve children with various developmental delays and disabiliti es, such as auti sm, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, speech delays and many more. Our off ering of a reverse inclusion approach combines children with developmental delays with typically developing children from the community: the results of this teaching method, coupled with our therapeuti c programs, are truly astounding! Our students are bett er prepared for kindergarten and a lifeti me of learning, due to the quality early educati on they receive at WVCA.

None of this could be possible without the unwavering support of our community, volunteers and supporters. From our annual Gala and Walk-A-Thon to volunteer cleanup eff orts - the ti me, talent and resources given to WVCA are invaluable in helping us achieve our mission of student success. Thank you for helping us grow and thrive.

Inside, you will fi nd more informati on about WVCA, some of our accomplishments in the 2017-2018 school year and hear about some of our amazing students. As we near our 95th anniversary next year, I am excited to see the conti nued growth and accomplishments our agency will achieve going forward. Again, thank you for choosing to invest in our community’s future by supporti ng those who need us the most – our children. If you have any questi ons about WVCA’s programs or upcoming events, please feel free to contact me at 570-714-1246 or [email protected].

What about the facility?

WHY choose WVCA?WVCA is a very special school. We truly believe in every child’s unique potential and strive to minimize or eliminate the effects of developmental delays through therapeutic services and quality education. By serving ALL children, WVCA creates an inclusive environment for children to discover and develop into curious learners and compassionate citizens. With our quality programs and dedicated staff, our students are well prepared for Kindergarten and beyond. We have a solid reputation of high quality programs and look forward to serving our community for many years to come.

Wyoming Valley Children’s Association is located at 1133 Wyoming Ave, Forty Fort, PA 18704. Our facility consists of our school building, a handicap accessible playground and an outdoor STEAM learning classroom. WVCA has been at this current location for 10 years – prior to this facility our agency was located at the Kirby Health Center in Wilkes-Barre for 80+ years. While our school is in Forty Fort, we serve children from all over Luzerne County, as well as surrounding counties. WVCA’s school year starts the week before Labor Day and ends in early June. WVCA also runs an extended school year program each year.

“WVCA has been instrumental in not one, but two of my sons lives. My son Isaiah could not express himself verbally at all when he first started at WVCA – now he is a social butterfly! He is holding conversations and even tutoring his older brother, who is Autistic and also attended WVCA. Both of my sons are talking now and I can honestly say that WVCA is such a blessing. This school deserves recognition for their dedication to bettering the lives of special needs children.” Amber Brown, WVCA Parent

“Since starting at WVCA, my family has seen a huge, positive difference in my son - He has become more vocal and is expressing his desire to attend school. I was worried about inclusion in the classroom, but I am told by my son’s nurse that he is always included. WVCA has given my son the priceless opportunity for social interactions with other children. I would recommend this school to any parent in Wyoming Valley.”

Leaving A Legacy Wyoming Valley Children’s Association (WVCA) is committed to the long-term vitality of our community and our school. In order to ensure that the needs of local children will be met well into the future, WVCA has created a planned giving program. Through this program, supporters are able to contribute lasting gifts that will continue to help those in need for perpetuity. Planned gifts are made through various assets, to guarantee long-term impact. Whether through a gift of stock, bequest, life insurance policy or a trust, your donation will allow us to sustain and strengthen our impact for the children most in need in our community. All donors who have made a planned gift, or who let us know that they will be making a planned gift, will be included as members of our program.

Leave a lasting legacy for the next generation by including Wyoming Valley Children’s Association in your will or estate plans, contact Nina Zanon, Executive Director at (570) 714-1246 or [email protected].

Over the past year, I have shared the story of my amazing, smart and silly 5-year-old boy Noah with the entire community. Noah’s life has truly been changed by attending Wyoming Valley Children’s Association and words can hardly express how grateful I am that we found WVCA.

Before coming to WVCA, Noah was nonverbal. He didn’t speak at all. For so long it seemed like Noah was stuck in his own world and it broke my heart knowing that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t break through. But that all changed when Noah began school at WVCA when he was three years old. The amazing, patient and kind staff worked with my son every day and the change in Noah was remarkable. Now, I can finally hear the words “I love you mommy” and listen to him count, recite his ABC’s or sing his favorite songs from Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Without WVCA Noah’s life would be drastically different.

I have shared his story in WVCA’s annual appeal, at the organization’s annual meeting luncheon and, most recently, at the United Way Campaign Kick-Off Reception where WVCA received the “Partner of the Year” Award. I am honored to be able to advocate for such an amazing school, we are truly blessed to have this agency in our community. By sharing my family‘s story, I feel that I am able to help give back to an organization that truly gave my son an entire new world.

Thank you to the teachers, staff, therapists, donors and community supporters who help WVCA achieve its mission. I am forever grateful for the future you have opened up for Noah – a future I could have never dreamed of before WVCA!

I cannot wait to see what amazing things Noah will achieve after his pre-school graduation and I will be sure to continue to share his journey with our second-family here at WVCA.

Take a look below at some of our school’s growth and achievements in the 2017-2018 academic year:

Thank you to our staff, donors, volunteers and community members for contributing to our mission!

n WVCA saw one of its largest enrollments in recent years! We had a total of 119 students enrolled in the 2017-2018 school year.

n Through the PA Keystone STARS program, we reached the highest level – a STAR 4 rating! This signifies and recognizes our dedication to meeting high quality standards in education, safety and care.

n WVCA broke ground on the Outdoor STEAM Classroom renovation project.

n Fundraising Successes; WVCA saw increases in funding dollars from Grant funding, the Annual Appeal, Walk-A-Thon and Gala fundraisers. All proceeds directly benefit the school.

n Graduation! Each child’s journey to graduation is a unique path and each year this milestone is something to celebrate! Twenty-nine students graduated WVCA last year and moved on to Kindergarten.

n And much more!

26th Annual “Do it For the Kids” Walk-A-Thon It was a beauti ful spring day for this year’s Walk-A-Thon where over 300 walkers made their way down Wyoming Avenue to support WVCA. From Stars Wars “Meet & Greets”, multi ple community vendors and a picnic lunch – there was something for everyone! A special thank you to our winning teams, who raised thousands of dollars for WVCA through their fundraising: Team Kati e, Antonio Bryk and Caleb Kioske.

WVCA Gala at HogwartsOur 200 guests traveled to a magical wizarding world at our Harry Pott er Themed Gala! The décor, silent aucti on and entertainment by mentalist Denny Corby made the evening truly spectacular! Congratulati ons again to our “Making A Diff erence Award” recipients Bruce & Nancy Weinstock, we greatly appreciate your unwavering dedicati on to WVCA.

Thank you to the hundreds of guests, generous corporate sponsors and talented volunteers who supported our 2018 Gala and Walk-A-Thon events.
