Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot’s Purpose StatementCongregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot is a Reform Jewish community that provides a spiritual home guided by memory and

mitzvah, committed to mentsch making and making meaning.

Memory:• We have a sacred obligation to be guardians of the past and to remember those who came before us. We stand on their

shoulders.• We shall use our collective Jewish memory to guide us on our paths.• We will pass our tradition from generation to generation. We will cherish the past and we will create new Jewish memories for

those who come after us.

Mitzvah:• We will create a community, and by extension, a world, centered in good deeds.• We will serve as a place where people will be inspired to do mitzvot as part of their very being.• We will treat each other with kindness. We will be guided by the biblical dictum, “Love thy neighbor as thyself, I am the Lord

(Lev. 19:18)” and the Talmudic dictum, “What is hateful to you, do not do to another person. (Hillel)”. Our congregants and congregation as a whole will represent the best of humanity.

Mentsch Making:• We will recognize that every human being is created in God’s Image. Our community will emulate that Holy Reflection and all

will bask in its glow.• We will teach that everyone is special and has something unique to offer our community. In so teaching, we strive to further

deepen our relationships to each other, to our community and to the Eternal One.• We will create a holy community, beginning within the walls of the synagogue and then flowing outside the walls; in which

kindness abides, benefit of the doubt is common place and caring is paramount.

Making Meaning:• We recognize that Judaism marks time as holy. From our music to our meetings, every moment will be a time to make

meaning.• We will search for meaning in all that we do. In times of joy and in times of sadness, bringing a Jewish message to those

moments fills time with depth.• We will treat each minute, from the classroom to the boardroom, as a gift from God to be used wisely.

Arie Shikler was born in Palestine under the British rule, before Israel was Israel, to Polish

immigrant parents Moshe and Shulamit Shikler and has an older sister Ilana. He grew up

in Ramat Gan and showed very early talent in art. At the age of ten Arie entered and won

a city-wide art competition. The event led to the opening of Beit Emanuel, an art school

for gifted children where he was the star. He also studied privately with Avraham Tavori, a known art

master.

Arie was athletic and participated in many sports. He was very popular with many friends in the

neighborhood and beyond his youth; was full of fun. Although he played a recorder as many kids there

did, it was the guitar he received as a gift for his fifteenth birthday that changed his life. With his high

school friend Memi, they formed a duo and performed at parties and clubs.

Before being drafted to the army Arie auditioned for a spot in the Central Command ISO group but the

letter of acceptance arrived after he began training to be a Morse Code operator. A show biz career

was missed when his superior commander refused to transfer him to the ISO. Instead he enlisted in

cadet school and became a radio officer continuing to play guitar and was in charge of entertainment

in addition to his duties on the base. His sense of humor and ability to do impressions led to many fun

times.

After the service, he was hired by the Ministry of Posts along with four other radio officers who finished

their mandatory service. They were tasked with a goal to bring the country’s entire communication

systems under one central control. All radio and telephone infrastructure was to be supervised and

controlled from their brand new high-rise office in the Shalom Tower in Tel Aviv. Later this evolved into

Bezek, the government owned entity.

The Six Day war found Arie a year later in the Sinai fighting as a brigade communication officer under

Col. Kuti Adam who reported to Gen. Arik Sharon, the Division commander. They fought a fierce and

successful fight in Abu Ageila, a strategic Russian built fortified complex controlling the main road into

the Peninsula. The war played a part in his desire to study abroad where there were “no wars”. He was

accepted at Cal State University at Long Beach in the Industrial Design program. He continued to draw

and paint and sold out a complete exhibition of his paintings while a student at CSULB.

It was during those years, that in order to make ends meet he taught seventh grade Hebrew at Temple

Beth Emet in Anaheim and was discovered by our founding rabbi, Bernie King, who offered him the

cantor’s job for services and life cycles. The Temple was called

Harbor Reform Temple in those days and services were held at

St. James church on Lido Isle. Later they moved to the Balboa

Peninsula’s Christ Church By The Sea. A man of many interests

Arie learned how to fly a single engine aircraft and enjoyed it

very much. He doubled as a cantor and an industrial designer

until a move to Europe in 1975. Arie worked as chief Designer

for Fokker Aircraft in Amsterdam, a job that brought him to

distant lands in Africa and Asia. He was involved with airlines

and executive planes, many of them ordered by heads of state.

A phone call from Rabbi King in 1978 brought Arie and his young

family back to the congregation that missed him during the

three years he was gone. He resumed his cantorial duties and

went to work for Fleetwood Enterprises as design manager of

class C motor homes, where he invented a few patents for the

company. The Temple was now located in East Bluff’s St. Mark

Church and Arie worked during the week at Tiger Air in Burbank.

A few years later he opened his own consulting firm and was

involved with a variety of projects ranging from medical and

consumer products to executive interiors. The largest of these

projects was a Jetfoil ship designed for King Fahd of Saudi

Arabia. Friday nights and Saturday mornings at temple were his

sweet escape from the pressures of the corporate world and a

spiritual refuge. His three children grew up at temple, literally.

He took a job as director of design at Auto Shade, a company in

the San Fernando Valley. And it was in 1994 that Arie became

our full time cantor. During that time Cantor Shikler has recorded

five full length CD’s of original work. Under his leadership, SHM

has instituted the Friday Night Live Program, a youth choir and

youth band, an Adult Choir, yearly concerts, a congregational

musicians band and adds flavor and spirituality to all that

he does.

Beyond his congregational family, Cantor Shikler is married to

Beth Shikler (also our Executive Director) and his children are

Karen (Tim), Merav (Adam), Alexandra (Joe) and his son Gidon

(Andrea) who is a frequent guest performer at Friday Night Live

and annual concerts all live in the US. He has 2 grandchildren,

Elijah and Isaac.

lines of Genesis. Indeed this is a celebration. For we not only

celebrate Torah on Simchat Torah, we celebrate the learning of

Torah by consecrating the newest students to our Temple. Each

student will be given his or her own Torah, and will be called

to the bimah for a special individual blessing with the Rabbi.

In addition, there will be dancing, singing, celebrating, flag

waving, and much more.

PASSOVER

Women’s SederSunday, March 18th at 4:00 pm

Bring your mothers, daughters, sisters and friends and consider

inviting women of other faiths to join you! Before you prepare

for Passover, take a break to celebrate the festival of freedom

with other women and Rabbi Sarah DePaolo. You’ll make new

memories while we recall the past during our catered multi-

generation Passover Seder. Guests are welcome. Let us know if

you would like to participate in the planning.

Passover Community SederSaturday, March 31st at 5:30 pm

More than 90% of Jews all over the world will celebrate

Passover at a seder table this year. Be one of them and join our

congregational family at our second night seder. Look for more

information in the month of March.

Passover Yizkor ServiceMonday, April 6th at 10:30 am

Just as it is customary on the three Pilgrimage Holidays to

hold a service, so too on the last day. On that last day of the

holiday (in this case, Passover) it is customary to observe Yizkor

(Remembrance) and recall those who live in our hearts, but

are no longer with us on this earth. Yizkor commemorates the

end of a holiday and the rich memories that we shared with

loved ones.

YOM HASHOAH SERVICE

Thursday, April 12th at 5:30 pm

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, Yom Ha Shoah, we will join as

an inter-generational community to keep the memory alive of

those who were killed in the Holocaust, and honor the lives of

the survivors of the Shoah.

YOM HA’ATZMAUT ISRAEL

CELEBRATION

Sunday, April 22nd at 10:45 am

Join the Religious School students and the congregation of

Shir Ha-Ma’alot for a fun-filled day of celebration for Israel’s

birthday! Enjoy our traditional homemade Israeli food, Israeli

dance and more!

SHAVUOT SERVICE & STUDY

Saturday, May 19th at 6:30 pm

According to tradition, it was on Shavuot that Moses received the

Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai. To observe this occasion,

the Kabbalists would stay up all night learning, studying, and

celebrating this wonderful revelation of the Jewish People. This

event, for the entire congregation, is a chance to study with

many different teachers about relevant and real issues of the

soul, spirit and mind.

Social Action Programs at SHMShir Ha-Ma’alot strives to provide meaningful opportunities for congregants to participate in social justice projects throughout the

year. We believe that all actions including food drives, blood drives, building a home, serving a meal or writing a letter to Congress

have the potential to heal the world.

actions–Tikkun Olam.

NAMES PROJECT (YAD VASHEM)

For over 50 years, Yad Vashem, the world center for Shoah

(Holocaust) remembrance and education, has led the

historic mission to gather the names of those who perished

and memorialize them. In the Central Database of Shoah

Victims’ Names, close to 4 million names have been recorded.

Congregation Shir Ha-Ma’alot is working together to help ensure

that every victim of the Shoah has a place in our collective

memory.

Our goal is for each family to reach out to their family members

and friends who know of victims who died in the Holocaust.

Then, we must be sure that the names we find are properly

entered in the Central Database.

JESSICA HERRON SHARING &

CARING PROGRAM

Thanksgiving Food Drive Sunday, November 19th, 10:00 am–1:00 pm

Each year Shir Ha-Ma’alot collects food for families throughout Orange County

through our synagogue Jessica Herron Sharing & Caring Program. The families

chosen for this program are among the poorest of the working poor. This

project helps fill a desperate need. Watch for details in the Ma’alot newsletter.

Chanukah & Christmas Gift DriveSunday, December 17th, 10:00 am–1:00 pm

SHM participates in the Jessica Herron Sharing & Caring Program for the

Holidays by helping needy families celebrate Christmas. You will be given a

choice of families to “adopt” along with their “wish list” of household needs. We

also partner with Jewish Family Services to assist needy families at Chanukah.

Donations of gift cards, cash or checks will go far in helping families in need.

Passover Gift Card DriveDeadline is Sunday, March 18th, 11:00 am–12:00 pm

Please join us in helping needy Jewish families celebrate Passover by donating

grocery store gift cards, cash or checks. All donations are tax deductible.

Passover food donations are welcome too!

Opportunities for Year Long GivingSHM families and friends can donate gift certificates and money throughout

the year for food for the hungry and college or camp scholarships for needy

students. SHM families can also be matched with families in Orange County

to develop a bond for a lifetime. Spread the Warmth! New and/or cleaned,

gently used sleeping bags can be donated all year long. These are given to

families that are sleeping on the floor in apartments that they share with

others. Throughout the year, gently used goods are collected and distributed

to families in need. Contact Barbara King directly at [email protected] for

donation opportunities.

The Jessica Herron

Sharing & Caring Program

Story

This program is dedicated to the memory of

Jessica Herron, daughter of Dana Klein and Jay

Herron, who lost her life in a traffic accident in

October 2005. Jessica had a lifelong history of

caring about the needs of others.

She volunteered at Share Our Selves, helping

with the Thanksgiving and Christmas food

drives, delivered for Meals on Wheels for six

summers, and worked the finish line for the

Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure” among many

other projects.

Barbara and Rabbi Bernie King chose to rename

SHM’s Inner-City Partnership Program in Jessica’s

memory to honor her love for helping others.

There will be three major projects and the

ongoing partnership throughout the year. The

Thanksgiving meal program provides a week’s

worth of groceries to the poorest working

families in Orange County. The Christmas and

Chanukah drives ensure that a family can

provide new holiday gifts for each of their loved

ones. The Passover program provides kosher for

Passover food to Jewish families who could not

afford it otherwise.

These drives make miracles happen! For

more information contact Barbara King at

of their formal Jewish education with a Consecration service on

Sunday morning, October 15th, 2017.

Sibling ClubSundays 8:00-9:25

Many families have children in multiple grade-levels. Those

parents who are bringing 3rd through 6th graders for Hebrew,

and who do not want to return before 9:30 to bring younger

children, Sibling Club is available to simplify your Sundays!

Staffed by teachers and madrichim, children will have an

opportunity for structured free play, both inside and outdoors.

1ST — 6TH GRADE

JudaicaEvery Sunday 9:30-11:45

As students enter into their classroom on a Sunday morning,

they will feel the ruach (spirit/energy) that is welcoming and

contagious. Our students begin their Judaica time in their grade

level classrooms with their teachers.

Judaica class time will be enhanced each week with an

opportunity to participate in one of our Judaica Enrichments:

Conversational Hebrew, Israeli Dancing and Music.

In addition, Sundays will continue to be enriched by participation

in our other chuggim, student chosen electives, such as Jewish

art, drama, teva (nature and group building), cooking, and more.

Chuggim are for our 2nd through 6th graders only.

At the end of the morning, the entire school community will

gather together for meaningful and participatory T’fillah/prayer.

HEBREW

Sunday Hebrew Chavurah 8:00 am–9:25 am—New time this year

Our Sunday Hebrew program meets once a week for Hebrew

before Sunday Judaica session. Students in Sunday Hebrew will

have two teachers in their classroom, which will allow them to

benefit from small group instruction, forming connections and

bonds with other peers in their grade level and, of course, their

teachers!

Tuesday Hebrew Chavurah 4:45 pm–6:15 pm

This is our 2-day a week program. In addition to Sunday Judaica,

students attend on Tuesday afternoons for Hebrew. Students

in this program will be placed in small groups based on their

Hebrew fluency, not grade—Alef (1st level), Bet (2nd level),

Gimel/Dalet (3rd/4th level). Another benefit to this Hebrew

program is that the levels are fluid and students can move

levels throughout the year, based on their understanding and

mastery of the Hebrew language and prayers. Students in the

Tuesday program join together in a T’fillah/prayer time during

the program, giving them twice as much exposure to the prayers

and the melodies as the Sunday program offers.

Tuesday Hebrew Tutoring 4:45 pm–6:15 pm

This year, there is a tutoring option for our Hebrew students who

need some extra help. This tutoring is offered only on Tuesday

nights and is a 45 minute block of time during which a student

can be tutored by an adult with years of experience.

Cost is $15 per 45-minute session and must be booked through

the Principal by Monday of the week tutoring is needed.

Individual Hebrew Instruction (scheduled based on your availability)

New this year is a learning option for students who attend

Sunday Judaica, but are unable to attend traditional classroom

Hebrew on Sundays or Tuesdays. Our staff will pair students up

with an SHM teacher who will travel to your house once a week

for a 45-minute one-on-one lesson. If you are interested in this

Hebrew program, you must fill out an Individual Instruction

form, so that we can best match you up with the appropriate

teacher to fit the needs of your child(ren).

7TH GRADE

Seventh Grade Judaica9:30-11:45 Every Sunday

7th Grade takes place on Sunday mornings and is taught by

our new Assistant Rabbi. The class is focused on Middot and

Mitzvot (values and sacred actions). This program teaches our

students how a particular Middah (value) can be brought into

their current lives and show them how through an Action Day.

Each Action Day is tied to a Mitzvah that shows a particular

Middah in action. There are multiple opportunities for

hands-on activities within our community, which reinforces

the learning done in class. In addition, there is a 7th grade

Retreat in the beginning of the year where students make lasting

friendships (the weekend of October 22nd). Lastly, our students

culminate their learning by hosting our school’s end of the year

Tzedakah Fair, which is entirely run by our 7th grade students. It’s

a transformative year in their lives and Jewish education!

7th Grade Prayer ClassSundays 8:45-9:25

In preparation for their B’nai Mitzvah celebrations, our 7th

graders have an opportunity to review the prayers that they

learned in their formal Hebrew instruction.

8TH & 9TH GRADE

Every other Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm

8th GradeIn joining the Tuesday night teen community, 8th graders

attend twice a month on Tuesday evenings from 5:00-7:30pm.

Dinner and social time will be available from 5:00-5:30. At 5:30,

students begin their core hour with Heather Rosenthal. In this

class, students will take a deeper look at the Holocaust with

a curriculum entitled, “Our History, Our Time”. Our 8th graders

will be helping lead our Yom HaShoah service, which is the day

we remember those who were lost during the Holocaust, on

April 12th, 2018.

9th GradeAlong with 8th grade, our 9th graders also attend twice a

month on Tuesday evenings from 5:00-7:30pm. Dinner and social time will be available from 5:00-5:30. At 5:30, students begin their

core hour with Rabbi DePaolo. During this time, students will discover the ancient wisdom of Mussar, exploring self-defining traits and

reflecting with themselves and one another how to enhance those traits in themselves to live a healthy and happy life as teens.

At 6:30, the elective hour will allow the 8th and 9th graders to learn together in topics that they choose, ranging from Jewish art to

Jewish cooking to debate to ‘hot topics’ to prayer yoga to Torah study and more.

10TH GRADE CONFIRMATION

Confirmation is a transformative year as our 10th grade students

are affirming their commitment to the Jewish people. The

students will learn about themselves by exploring how the

Ten Commandments can be applied in their everyday lives.

This class will provide a fun, safe, challenging and exciting

environment for our students to explore their Judaism.

Taught by Rabbi Steinberg with Rabbi DePaolo, this year will

provide opportunities to apply the Jewish wisdom to their lives

as teens, as well as expand their Jewish horizons. They will be

confronted with situations where they consider their choices

for their future, therefore confirming their place in the Jewish

community.

Together the class will celebrate their accomplishments with a

year-end Confirmation service created and led by the students

themselves.

11TH & 12TH GRADE

Rappin’ with the RabbiSecond Tuesday of the month, 6:00pm–7:30 pm

Keeping our post-Confirmation teens engaged and connected

is one of the main goals of our program. Having a place where

our juniors and seniors feel comfortable and connected to

our synagogue is crucial for their continued Jewish lives. Join

Rabbi Steinberg once a month for a discussion of today’s issues.

Connection is an integral part of this program as our students

continue to build those lifelong friendships. Come prepared to

be engaged, challenged and of course, have fun!

MADRICHIM

Students in grades 8-12 have the opportunity to give back to their community by serving as a Madrich/a, a Guide or Teacher’s

Assistant, on Sunday mornings or Tuesday afternoons. Madrichim are powerful role models for the younger students! This program

will enhance not only our teens’ Jewish knowledge, leadership capability and identity, but will also enable them to make a difference

in the lives of younger children.

Madrichim will also take part in the Madrichim Leadership Seminar (MLS) every Sunday during Religious School. This class is designed

to empower them as leaders and teach them about working in classrooms and with children.

Before the school year starts all Madrichim must take part in Madrichim Orientation, and first year Madrichim will also take part

in a Leadership Training Institute (LTI). These sessions are an important part of ensuring that our Madrichim are prepared for the

year ahead!
