The Golden Grizzlies secured a 79-53 win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday (Jan. 6) with a strong defensive showing leading the way, as Oakland held the Norse to a mere 26 percent on the floor and just 16 percent from beyond the arc. Oakland’s Cierra Bond posted career-high marks in points (25), field goals (9) and threes (6), while Taylor Jones netted 11 points to become the 28th player in program history to record 1,000 points in a Golden Grizzlies uniform. LAST TIME OUT The Flames wrapped up a two-game road trip at Cleveland State on Saturday with a tough 70-67 loss. Facing a 56-42 deficit at the beginning of the fourth quarter, UIC put together 25 points and held the Vikings to 23.1 percent shooting, but ended up committing untimely fouls in the final 10 seconds, allowing the home team to sink four free throws as the difference maker. Brittany Byrd led the way with a career-high 31 points, the most recorded by a single player since Ruvanna Campbell’s 32-point showing on Feb. 13, 2016 at Oakland. The junior also had career- highs in field goals (13) and was responsible for five of UIC’s six three-pointers. Tylah Lampley came off the bench and poured in a career-best 15 points, while Gabryelle Johnson recorded her third double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. ANATOMY OF A COMEBACK UIC came back from an 11 point deficit to defeat North Texas Dec. 18. Their rally from 11 points down with 3:24 to play in the third quarter was engineered with shutdown defense. The Flames held the Mean Green to just four field goals on 15 attempts in the fourth quarter and forced six turnovers in the final period, including on North Texas’ second-to-last possession with the Flames leading by one. North Texas shot 54% in the first half, made 6-of-13 threes, and had a 12:4 assist to turnover ratio. After halftime, they went 0-for-5 from long range, and turned the ball over 14 times to just 8 assists. SETTING THE SCENE Watch ..............................ESPN3 Live Stats ............ RACKING UP SECOND CHANCESUIC is second in the Horizon League in offensive rebounds with 15.1 per game. Gabryelle Johnson leads the team with 50, and has nearly as many offensive rebounds as defensive (55). Three players (Johnson, Byrd, Toney) have at least one game with five offensive rebounds. The Flames have out-offensive rebounded their opponents in 12 of 14 games. The team’s 26 offensive boards and 25 second chance points against Indiana Northwest were both season highs.

HISTORIC COMEBACKSThe Flames’ comeback from 15 points down to Eastern Michigan was the second largest comeback in the Regina Miller era. It was the 11th time Miller led her troops to a win after facing a double digit deficit. The 11 point comeback against North Texas was the 12th such win. The Flames were down by 15 as late as the 3:18 mark of the third quarter against EMU, and faced their largest deficit as late as 3:24 in the third period against North Texas.

THREE-PER BY THE DOZENUIC converted 12 three-point field goals against Eastern Michigan Dec. 8, and equaled that number against Evansville. That is a high in the six-plus seasons under Regina Miller. The wealth was spread out against EMU, as six players made at least one triple and nobody had more than three. Brittany Byrd did the heavy lifting against the Purple Aces, converting six of the team’s triples.

FURIOUS FOURTHThe Flames came back from a 15 point deficit to beat Eastern Michigan, outscoring the Eagles 31-19 in the fourth quarter. That is UIC’s second-highest total in any period since quarters were instituted in the 2015-16 season, and their highest scoring quarter against a Division I opponent. They made 11-of-18 field goals, 4-of-8 3’s, and 5-of-6 free throws.

HITTING THEIR SHOTSUIC has shot 40% or better from the floor in seven games this season. The team is 5-2 in those games. The going has been tougher in games in which their shooting percentage dipped below 40%, as they are 2-5 in those contests. That is still two more wins than they got all of last season when making less than 40% of their field goals. The team is much more consistent inside the arc, having made at least 40% of their two-pointers in 11 contests, with a record of 7-4.

TRIPLE DOUBLEFour players scored at least 10 points on Jan. 4 against Youngstown State, and three scored at least 10 points the following game at Cleveland State (Jan. 6) It was the eighth time this year that the Flames placed at least three in double figures. UIC is now 5-3 in those games (Jackson State - L; Indiana State - W; Indiana Northwest - W; Eastern Michigan - W; Evansville - W; North Texas - W; Youngstown State - L; Cleveland State - L).

THE DRIVE FOR FIVEThe Flames recorded their longest home court winning streak in a single season spanning Nov. 30-Dec. 18, but was snapped with Saturday’s loss to IUPUI. The run was UIC’s longest since the 2014-15 team won eight straight from Nov. 14 through Jan. 2.

PERFECT FROM THE LINETaylor Toney was a perfect 12-for-12 at the free throw line against Fort Wayne Nov. 21, breaking the program record for most free throws in a game without a miss. The previous record was 10, set by Shamiea Green on Dec. 22, 2011. Toney made 17 straight foul shots overall until missing one against Bradley. She is the most efficient at the line, making 80 percent (48-of-60) of all freebies this season.

TWIN TWENTIESTaylor Toney and Brittany Byrd each scored more than 20 points in two games this season (Fort Wayne and Evansville). Two Flames had not scored 20 or more points in the same game since Jan. 9, 2016 (Ruvanna Campbell - 29, Kendyl Nunn - 25). Byrd and Toney each have three 20-point games this season. The whole Flames roster combined for just two such games last year.

    GAME 15: UIC vs. Oakland - Jan. 11, 2018 - 7:00 pm CT - UIC Pavilion - page 5

STABILITY AMONG THE STARTERSRegina Miller has sent the same starting five (Etheridge, Byrd, Toney, Johnson, Zagorac) out in each game of the season. This represents a shift from last season’s showing, which included 13 different starting combinations. UIC’s starters are getting the bulk of the minutes, too. Three of them (Byrd, Toney, John-son) are in the Horizon League’s top eight in minutes played. Byrd leads the conference at 35.4 minutes per game.

SHE GOES, WE GOBrittany Byrd set a career-high with 31 points on Saturday at Cleveland State. She made 13-of-18 shots and 5-of-9 three pointers. She is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.0 points per game. Byrd has lead the team in scoring in eight games this season, the most of anyone on the roster. She had back-to-back 20 point outings earlier this year, and has four on the season. Byrd is the Flames’ leader in shot attempts and makes from the field overall and from three-point range. Given all those superlatives, it should be no surprise that her personal struggles have overlapped with those of the team. Byrd is shooting 43 percent in Flames wins, and 35 percent in losses.

SCOUTING OAKLANDOakland improved to .500 (2-2) in Horizon League play with its 79-53 win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday. The Golden Grizzlies are right in the middle of the overall conference rankings, sitting fifth in the 10-team pool.

Oakland is third in the League in scoring offense, averaging 72.6 points per game, but is ninth in scoring defense, allowing an average of 65.3 points per game. The Golden Grizzlies are effective from beyond the arc, making 33.7 percent of their threes for a second-place ranking, and are also solid defensively in three-point range, sitting second in three-point defense, allowing just 25.4 percent of shots. Oakland is also first in the League in steals (10.6 per game) and blocked shots (4.1 per game), and is second in both turnover margin (+4.9) and assist/turnover ratio (1.0).

GABBY GOES DOUBLE-DOUBLEGabryelle Johnson leads the Flames with three double-doubles this season. She contributed on both ends of the floor against Jackson State, posting a career high 18 rebounds, 10 offensive, and tying her then-career mark with 13 points. It was her first double-double, and the most offensive boards by a Flame since Ruvanna Campbell snagged 10 on Feb. 20, 2016. Johnson set a new career high with 17 points against North Texas on Dec. 18 and added 12 boards for her second double-double, and recorded her third of the season on Saturday at Cleveland State with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

LIGHTING THE LAMPTylah Lampley has cemented herself in the rotation as an important bench player. She leads the team in minutes, points, and rebounds off the bench, and is the overall leader in blocked shots. Lampley’s athlet-icism has impacted several games, including the North Texas contest when she scored six-straight points to complete the Flames’ 11 point comeback and give them the lead in the fourth quarter.

RIGHT ON POINTCatera Etheridge has emerged as the Flames’ full-time starter at point guard this season. Though she did start 12 games last year, she averaged only 17.3 minutes. On the floor for 28.3 minutes per game this year, Etheridge has brought a steady hand to the ball handling responsibilities while also increasing her averages in points, assists, and steals from 2016-17. The junior guard posted a career-high 17 points on Saturday, Dec. 30 against IUPUI in the Horizon League opener.

GETTING UP TO SPEEDWith six newcomers on the team, the rotation has tightened up in the early stages of this season. Starters, all juniors and seniors, have accounted for 74 percent of the total minutes so far. Nonetheless, all six newcomers have seen game action. Freshmen Abreanna Lake, Tia Tedford, and Jada Nneji have been on the floor the most. They average 9.5, 10.9, and 8.6 minutes per game respectively.

AFFECTING THE GAMEJada Nneji had back-to-back quality appearances in which she has filled out the stat sheet. On the floor for 13 minutes against Bradley, Nneji had four points, four steals, and a block -- all season highs to that point. She also had three rebounds, one short of her season best. She topped her season scoring high against Indiana Northwest with seven points, tied her rebounding mark with four, and added an assist, a block, and a steal.

GETTING AN EARLY STARTThe Flames no strangers to daytime (before 6:00 pm) tipoffs. They started the season with six out of seven day games, and Saturday’s match-up with Cleveland State was their fourth-straight morning or afternoon start. UIC will play 21 day games this season, and only 8 night games. The team is 4-6 in day games so far, exceeding last season’s win total in day starts, and will look to remain undefeated (3-0) in evening games with tonight’s contest against Oakland.

TURNING YOU OVERUIC has shown a commitment to disrupting opponents’ offensive rhythm, and reaped the benefits in the turnover category. The Flames are second in the Horizon League in turnovers forced. They have a positive turnover differential in eight of 14 games and have capitalized by going 6-3 in those contests. The team’s brand of pressure defense shows up not only in steals, but in deflections and harassment of opposing ball handlers leading to bad passes and traveling violations.

A CAREER NIGHTTeodora Zagorac set not one, but two career highs Nov. 30 against Indiana State. She hauled in 16 rebounds, easily eclipsing her previous high of 10. Fourteen of her caroms were on the defensive boards preventing the Sycamores from getting second chances. Zagorac also handed out six assists, mostly after drawing defenders under the basket and finding an open teammate. Her set-ups for easy shots helped the team shoot 41.5% for the game.

HOOSIER HYSTERIAUIC will have plenty of exposure to Indiana schools this season. Five non-conference opponents (Bethel, Fort Wayne, Indiana State, Indiana Northwest, and Evansville) and Horizon League foe IUPUI hail from the Hoosier State. UIC is 5-1 in those games so far.

MAKING ACQUAINTANCESFive of the Flames’ 11 non-conference opponents are first-time foes in program history. All five meetings were at UIC Pavilion, including Bethel (W), Jackson State (L), Santa Clara (L), Indiana Northwest (W), and North Texas (W).

HAILING FROM ALL OVERThis year’s freshman class, which hails from three states and Canada, brought increased geographical diversity to the roster. UIC’s 14 players represent six states (Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, Michigan, Wyoming, and California) and two foreign countries (Serbia and Canada).

Abreanna Lake (Elk Grove, Calif.) is the first Californian to suit up for the Flames since 2003. Jada Nneji (Uxbridge, Ontario, Canada) is the latest in a long line of international players to join the team, but the first Canadian to appear on the roster since 2009.

NEWCOMER ON THE BENCHKristen Morris joined the Flames’ coaching staff prior to this season. Morris was a four-year contributor at LSU, where she appeared in 108 games and three Final Fours. She was also a two-time Academic All-SEC selection. After graduating, she had a six year professional career overseas. She won two league championships and was the Eurobasket.com All-Belarusian League Player of the Year in 2014. This is Morris’ first collegiate coaching position.

    Oakland 78, UIC 50 | February 18, 2017 | Chicago, Ill.Flames Lose Senior Day Contest to Oakland

Oakland used a 20-3 run at the outset of the third quarter to turn a tight game into a runaway, and defeated UIC 78-50 in the Flames’ final home game of the 2016-17 season.

UIC came alive late in the third quarter. Brittany Byrd made a nice jump step through the lane and scored on a layup to highlight an 8-0 Flames run, but by then the damage had been done. The Grizzlies scored the first 15 points of the second half in just over four minutes. Leah Somer-field, who had gone scoreless in the first half, scored nine of Oakland’s first 20 points. They went 4-6 on three pointers during their run.

The Flames fell to 5-22 on the season (2-14 in Horizon League play). Oakland won its fourth straight over UIC and improved to 15-11 and 9-6 in the conference.

Byrd finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Flames. Terri Bender had 10 points for UIC, who couldn’t follow up Thursday’s win over Detroit Mercy with a second consecutive victo-ry for the first time this season. Catera Etheridge tied her career high with six boards.

Both teams had issues with ball security in the opening half. There were 28 combined turn-overs (14 by each team) including two steals by Bender, which elevated her into a tie for third place on UIC’s all time list. Bender finished the game with three steals and 259 for her career, needing just one theft in the Flames’ last two games to secure sole possession of second place.

UIC had a modest three point lead late in the first quarter, having held Oakland to an 0-7 shoot-ing drought. But the Grizzlies closed the quarter on an 8-0 run and led by six after 10 minutes. Buckets in rapid succession by Johnson, Bender, and Byrd constituted a 7-0 run and the Flames were back in the lead just 1:40 into the second quarter. UIC would suffer through a six minute stretch in which they scored just one basket. Their defense kept Oakland from building too much of a lead until an and-one by Taylor Toney ended the drought. Later, Kiki Bynes inter-cepted an Oakland pass and won the race to the rim.

Poll based on votes of head coaches, media, and sports information directors.

Gabryelle Johnson drew three charges in the second quarter alone, the final one coming on Oakland’s last possession and denying the Grizzlies a chance to extend their two point lead. For the second straight game, the Flames were down by two at the half.

Somerfield and Nicole Dodd each finished with 15 points for Oak-land. Hannah Little was held below her Horizon League-leading rebound average but still finished with nine to secure game high honors.

UIC’s three seniors, Bend-er, Laura Litchfield (one rebound in eight min-utes), and Melita Emanuel Carr (sidelined with an injury), were honored in a pregame ceremony. An emotional Bender took the PA microphone after the game to thank the fans and families for their support.

(Merrillville)2017-18: Made her season debut Nov. 16 against Jackson State...did not score a point in five minutes...saw action against Indiana Northwest and contributed several hustle plays...made an aggressive steal that led to a layup...later, was fouled on a drive to the basket, and rebounded her own free throw miss...finished with three points...scored two field goals, the first of her career, and finished with a season high five points in seven minutes against Evansville...made her only field goal attempt, a three pointer, against Loyola.
