Dear Friends of Villa Victoria Academy,

On behalf of the Board of

Directors and the Board of

Trustees, I am pleased to

present to you the 2016-2017

Villa Victoria Academy Annual

Report. We had a record-

breaking year! Listed in the pages of this

Annual Report is the proof of your hard work,

generosity and faithfulness to Villa Victoria.

With your financial gifts, and your gifts of

prayer, Villa’s faculty is able to “go and

teach,” just as we have done on the banks

of the Delaware since 1933.

We thank our Villa Board of Directors and our Board of Trustees for their dedication to

our beloved Academy. We also extend heartfelt thanks to our parents who provide

financial support and give of their time and talent to support Villa. We also thank our

faculty and staff for all that they do for our girls every day.

Villa Victoria Academy has undergone many significant changes in the past year. A

planning committee met from May of 2016 to December of 2016 to assess the financial

viability of the Villa Lower School. Sadly, we had to make the hard decision not to

accept enrollment in Grades K to 5 for the 2017-2018 school year. Born out of that

committee was the “Moving Villa Forward Committee” which has been working non-

stop since January 2017 to organize Villa into a “true” Middle School (Grades 6-8)

and the High School (Grades 9-12). This re-structuring involved major renovations to

our main building over this past summer. I invite all to come back to Villa and see

what has been done!

May God continue to bless each of us whose lives have been touched by Villa Victoria

Academy as we live out the mission of Saint Lucy Filippini.

Dear Villa Victoria Family,

To begin, thank you for being

part of the Villa Victoria family.

Thank you to Villa Victoria

Academy for permitting me to

serve as Board Chairperson.

To work with such devoted

Filippini sisters, teachers, administrators, staff

and volunteers has been a blessing.

As you may know, after much deliberation and

market analysis, it was decided not to accept

enrollment in Grades K to 5 and focus on the

Middle School and High School starting with

school year 2017-2018. Such decisions are never easy. The new model was the

one that was financially sustainable for us going forward. We thank everyone for their

patience and understanding during the process.

If you have been to our campus recently, you could not help but notice the significant

investment in our facilities. Thank you to the Religious Teachers Filippini for providing

the generous financial support for these changes and to the staff and volunteers who

gave unstintingly of their time during the summer so everything would be ready for

our girls’ return. Last year we also changed the content and targeting of our marketing

efforts. I am happy to report that those changes have resulted in Villa meeting its’

enrollment goals for the upcoming school year.

I have been a part of the Villa Victoria family since 2000, as

my older daughter graduated from Villa in 2004 and went on

to graduate from the University of Chicago. Our youngest

daughter will be attending Villa this year as a freshman. My

wife and I take extreme comfort knowing that our daughter

is in a community where parents want their daughters to be

spiritually and intellectually strong women.

During the course of the year, we will be offering alumnae, students and parents a

number of opportunities to further develop our sense of community. I invite you to join

me in those efforts as we begin the next chapter. More good things to come! God bless.

Charitable irA rollover: IRA owners ages

70½ or older may directly transfer up to

$100,000 per year, tax free, to charity. You

must be 70½ and transfer funds directly to

VVA from a traditional or Roth IRA. Please

notify VVA of your plans and contact your

IRA custodian to authorize your donation.

gifts of Life insurance: You may name Villa

Victoria the beneficiary or co-beneficiary

on an existing life insurance policy. In the

event of your death, Villa Victoria receives

the proceeds of the policy as a bequest,

generating federal estate tax benefits. If

you also make Villa Victoria the owner of the

policy and relinquish all incidents of ownership, you can claim an income tax

deduction for the cash surrender value.

stock options/Appreciated securities: Appreciated securities that you have held for

more than twelve months can be gifted to Villa Victoria and you can benefit by claiming

a charitable income tax deduction for the full value of the shares and avoiding the capital

gains tax that would have been due if the shares were sold. Gifts of stock are sold

beautifully at Pennsbury Manor to celebrate

the Christmas Season.

The Decibelle choir do Villa proud singing clas-

sic tunes at Newtown Welcome Day.

Members of Villa’s Junior State of America

chapter studied International Relations this

summer at Stanford University and Princeton

University as part of the prestigious JSA Summer School.

The Villa Bees Advanced Math Team placed 5th Nationally in the Advanced Math

Division of the Catholic Math League.

The Upper School enjoyed a special presentation by Iconographer Kristina Sadley:

“Writing” Icons and the Symbolism Found in Them.

Villa’s Track & Field Team came in 3rd place overall at the Penn-Jersey Track & Field

Championships.

Keith Sachs visited Villa on Holocaust Remembrance Day to share the story of his

late wife and former VVA French teacher, Renée Sachs, who was a hidden child

during the Holocaust.

6th grade students wrote letters and created cross bead necklaces to lift the spirits of

children at Boston Children’s Hospital.

Villa hosted its first Alumnae Speaker Series, featuring Devin Butchko (’10) and

Alisandra Carnevale (’02) who shared their experiences after graduation with

our students.

The Upper School bonded over team building activities and practiced their problem

solving skills during a field trip to the Princeton-Blairstown Center.

After two years of research and planning, Villa installed a new

digital sign on the corner of West Upper Ferry Road and Route 29.

a democratic society from Tim Tracey of the

Monmouth University Polling Institute.

The Fall Variety Show was a huge success

Helene Hubscher Vitella ’79 is married to Tom and is the proud mother of Emily

(6th grade) and Tommy (3rd grade).

ellie patounas Burke ’97 and husband James welcomed their first daughter, Ourania

Demita. A future Villa girl in the making!

olga Gonzalez ’01 CEO & Founder of Pietra PR was recently selected as President of

PRSA-NY (Public Relations Society of America-NY Chapter).

katherine kelly Valent ’02 is practicing commercial litigation in Texas representing

architects, engineers and other design professionals. Kate and husband Joe welcomed

son Francis “Frankie” Daniel Valent. He joins sister Mary Elizabeth and brother Lucas.

Marguerite DeHaven ’04 separated from the US Navy after 8 years as a Naval Flight

Officer flying EA-6B Prowler aircraft. She has begun a new career as a Civil Engineer.

alyssa Morey penick ’08 recently graduated medical school and will be a family

physician at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City.

kate Mooney ’12 has started her PhD program in African History at the Ohio State

University in the fall after graduating magna cum laude in English Literature (Honors)

and History and taking a gap year to work for Pitt’s African Studies Program.

Sara Sheffer ’16 and Melissa Simmons ’16, students at The New College of Florida,

were two of three students selected for the Isermann Medal program, which provides

an opportunity for academically talented first-year students from outside the state of

Florida to get hands-on research experience in mathematics and the natural sciences.
