Korean Government/Global Scholarship Program (KGSP)

A scholarship program by the South Korean Government, implemented by NIIED(National Institute for International Education)

Purpose Develop global leadership and strengthen Korea-friendly network

worldwide

Provide an opportunity to international students to conduct advanced studies and research at higher educational institutes in South Korea,

Details of KGSP

Graduate (MS and PhD) Scholars per year: about 820 from almost all over the world. Including both Embassy and Universities Recommended.

Session starts at September of each calendar year.

Undergraduate Students: 110 students from 64 different countries. Embassy Recommended only.

Session starts at March of each calendar year.

Details of KGSP Graduate Studies

Korea Embassies Recommendation: 490 candidates from 169 countries. 5-Students from Pakistan

Quota Reserved for the University Track: 327 students from 86 nations, 66 university.Quota for Pakistani Students: 8.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicant age must be under 40 years

Must have B.S or M.S degree as of September of the selection year.

Must have a GPA of at least 2.64/4.0 scale, or grades/marks/score of 80%(out of 100%)

Details of KGSP Graduate Studies

Scholarship Duration and Benefits:Master Program: 1 year Korean Language + 2 years of Master

Doctorate Program: 1 year Korean Language + 3 years of PhD

(Language is exempted if you have already Korean level (TOPIK) 5 or above.

Application Procedure and Details

Application Procedure via Embassy.

1. Apply to the Korean Embassy in Pakistan

2. Submit 3 set of documents except the recommendation letter(s).

3. Embassy Sends the documents to NIIED after initial screening.

1. NIIED selects candidates based on reserved quota of each embassy and selection criteria.

2. Notify the results to selected candidates.

1. NIIED sends the documents to the three universities designated by the applicant.

2. Securing admission in University will be the final selection.

Application Procedure and Details

Application Procedure via University.

1. Apply to the University mentioned in the approved Universities list.

2. University recommends the applicant to NIIED.

1. NIIED Selects candidates based on Quota of each Country

2. Notified to selected candidates

2nd Selection is the final selection.

Recommendation Process via University

1st Selection: Each university has own rules based on NIIED criteria

Most of the universities have application deadline around Feb-March

20 students are selected by the university against the quota assigned-countries.

No more than 3 candidates from a single country.

2nd Selection:NIIED Selection Committee selects as many successful candidates as

each country's quota from all of the candidates

University Selection Criteria: Assign points for each of above point

Conduct an optional telephonic interview

Final points of the candidate are finalized at the Department level

Contacting a professor is the key

Try to get recommendation from someone you are sure who will give positive feedback about you

Contacting the Professor

Key is to understand why a professor would recommend you for admission

If a Prof/lab is short of Projects/funding he will prefer a candidate

Who brings in his own funding

Whose research proposal is strong enough that he can apply for a new project/funding

If a Prof/lab has enough projects/funding but is looking researchers he will prefer a candidate

• Who is more flexible about the research topic

• Who will happily work on the idea/project already going on in the lab

Before contacting a Prof it is recommended to contact any Pakistani student in the same lab or department to know what

Prof is looking for.

Write a Good Study Plan (Statement of Purpose)

Finalize your research first

Avoid the attitude of "mein kuch bhi kar lun ga sir"

Should be close to the major your applying and the research area of professor you contacted

Write your Proposal by yourself

Avoid asking seniors to write the proposals for you or using their proposals with minor modifications

What to expect after selection as KGSP scholar

Korean Language institute will be different than your graduate study university and will be in different city

During Korean language learning, scholars are supposed to stay at the dorm of language institution with a roommate, thus cannot bring their family

As you might already know that two main issues in Korea are language and food, so as a KGSP scholar You will hopefully not have language issue except first month or so

Since you will learn language you will be able to experience Korean food as well within Halal limitations

Since not many foreigners are fluent in Korean here yet so its recommended to take part in community activities here

TEPS: 657

TOFEL: iBT 79, CBT 213

Recommendation from Professor

Can apply any university and any major

Benefits: Fee waiver of about 50-100% from University

50% fee is paid by Professor

Master Stipend Allowance: 500$ ~700$

Doctoral Stipend Allowance: 900$ ~ 1400$
