Let us help you discoverTuscarawas County. Anyonewho’s ever lived or grown uphere is eager to show it to you -and for a whole lot of reasons.

First of all, it’s beautiful! Justtake a drive down one of ourcountry byways and admire thepanorama of rolling hills cov-ered with forests and pasturesand well-tended farms. Youmay well come upon an Amishbuggy, or a cheesehouse, or awinery inside an old one-room

schoolhouse, all while aimlessly driving to admire our vistas -we promise a surprise around every corner.

Second, we’re very proud of our history. The windingTuscarawas River was a major highway for Native Americans, and frontier trails served as passageways for both British andAmerican troops during the Revolution, bringing conflict to our

Manythanks to those that helped with this photo opportunity to accuratelyportray the Dennison WWII Canteen and its upcoming 75thAnniversary Celebration. During WWII, 1.3 Million service mem-bers were served free food by 4,000 working volunteers at theDennison Depot Salvation Army Servicemen’s Canteen. These serv-ice men and women traveled by troop train along the NationalDefense Strategic Railway and stopped at the Depot as they weregoing off to fight in the war. The hospitality of the volunteers earnedthe village the nickname “Dreamsville, USA.”

“When we married, my husband and I chose to live in theTuscarawas Valley to raise our family in a safe andfriendly environment that also offered excellent

schools, quality higher education and many recreational and cul-tural opportunities. This was a great community in which to raiseour sons, and today we are sharing those same memory-makingexperiences with our grandchildren. We love family outings toTuscora Park where my sons and I worked as teenagers, theunique Warther Museum, the beautiful and inspiring UnionHospital Christmas Tree Festival and the fascinating DennisonDepot Museum. What child doesn’t love the trains at theDennison Depot! We have broadened horizons by attending playsat the Little Theatre and Tuscarawas Philharmonic performances,as well as multiple visits to the Kent State Tuscarawas PerformingArts Center. We look forward to additional family outings tomany other Tuscarawas County attractions.

now peaceful valley. We’ve got the only Revolutionary War fortin Ohio, the state’s first European settlement, a picture-perfectvillage that was home to a 19th-century communal society.History plays an integral part of the fabric of life in theTuscarawas Valley.

Finally, we’ve got the corner on the nostalgia market. Fromquirky museums like one devoted to the World’s Master Carverto the second-oldest drive-in in the world, bygone days aren’treally gone at all in our county. We’re the home of sports leg-ends, the World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock, a railway depot thatoffered hospitality to 1.3 million GIs in the Second World War.Yesteryear is still part of this year in Tuscarawas County. Not tomention, we’re a short and easy drive from attractions in oursurrounding counties, from the Pro Football Hall of Fame inCanton to a classic five-and-dime store and the McCook HouseCivil War Museum in Carrollton.

“Small Towns” - we’ve got a lot of them, each with its own“Big Stories.” Allow us to tell you a few of them.

DENNISON AND UHRICHSVILLE Also known as “The Twin Cities,” the side-by-side towns

of Dennison and Uhrichsville pay tribute to their past in twounique museums.

Dennison was called “Dreamsville” by the 1.3 million GIswho passed through during World War II and were offeredsandwiches and other sustenance by an army of 4,000 vol-unteers in the third largest war canteen in the country. Thesite of that canteen, now the Dennison Railroad DepotMuseum, is itself an architectural gem, but the line of old-time railroad cars pulled up to it pays homage to the town’sstoried past as an important center on the PennsylvaniaRailroad. Experience the heyday of railroad travel by walk-ing through a passengercoach, kitchen anddiner, and a Pullmansleeper decked out asthey’d have appeared inthe 1940s. There’s evena rare WWII militaryhospital car, one ofonly six remaining.

Find out why thisregion was also onceknown as “The Clay Capital of the World” at theUhrichsville Clay Museum, which harkens back to the timewhen more than two dozen local manufacturers providedthe nation with all manner of clay products. Most visitorshere will find themselves pulled to the displays of “whim-sies,” or folk art, that workers created just for fun, such as aclay Bambi or Porky the Pig, alongside elaborate ashtraysfashioned as wagon wheels or dogs and puppies. There’seven a gorgeous Tiffany-style lamp with a clay tree stumpas its base covered with grapes and ivy. Plans call for aworking beehive kiln to be included at a larger facilitybeing renovated close by, so that even more whimsical cre-ations can be produced.

DOVERAn eight-feet long model of Lincoln’s funeral train carved in

ivory. A television set resembling a space helmet. A thank-younote from Elvis’s funeral. A model of your mother’s - orgrandmother’s! - vacuum cleaner. All these can be found inthe quirky, offbeat museums of Dover.

The Warther Museum and Gardens showcases the life’s workof “Mooney” Warther, a man with a booming voice and wildhair, who also just happened to be dubbed “The World’sMaster Carver”. From a “Pliers Tree,” with 511 tiny plierscarved from one small block of wood to 64 working modelsof trains carved from thousands of pieces of ivory, ebony, andwalnut, Warther’s attention to detail may best be demonstratedby a tiny key hanging inside the Lincoln Funeral Train - It stilllocks and unlocks the tiny door beside it. Warther knives, withtheir distinctive swirl patterns, are known far and wide fortheir durability and can be viewed daily from creation to sale.

The Auman Museum of Radio and Television is a strolldown memory lane with hundreds of vintage radios and tele-visions from the early days through the 1950s. Styles rangefrom attractive Art Deco TV sets to the one resembling aspace helmet. Vintage toys, games, comics, and posters fromyesteryear are sprinkled throughout the collection.

The Toland-HerzigFamous EndingsMuseum may soundmacabre, but its 1,700items of funeral memo-rabilia are actuallyrespectful remembrancesof departed world lead-ers, sports figures, TVand film stars, scientists, astronauts and all man-ner of famous and infamous people. Items range from a tinypiece of Mother Theresa’s head garment to a lei worn at DonHo’s funeral to the head rest used by Jesse James’ undertaker.

Step into the opulent mansion of a local industrialist thatappears at the J.E. Reeves Victorian Home. Much of the fami-ly’s original furnishings remain in pristine condition, alongwith plush draperies, gorgeous chandeliers, carved mantels, and stained glass windows. The Carriage House Museum nextdoor focuses on Dover’s history. Make a special request topeek inside the refrigerator of the former Rausch GroceryStore, but brace yourself. The surprise inside has a tie to local“bad boy,” William Quantrill, a Civil War renegade and bandit.

You’ll find the historic vacuum cleaners alongside modernmodels at John’s Sweeper Service in downtown Dover, whereother nods to vintage Americana include a toy shop, candystore, and an ice cream store selling a “Stormin’ Norman,”their answer to a Blizzard.

GNADENHUTTEN ANDNEWCOMERSTOWN

A tall obelisk inside a peaceful cemetery in the now tranquiltown of Gnadenhutten marks the site of one of the darkestmoments in Ohio history - the massacre of 96 ChristianIndians in 1782 by American militia. Today, in addition to themonument, visitors cansee two reconstructedcabins, a small museumwith memorabilia tied tothe town, a “Peace Tree”planted by the DelawareNation, and -most sober-ing of all - the moundmarking the burial siteof the victims, strewnwith remembrancesfrom visitors.

Farther south, Newcomerstown was long ago the capital ofthe Delaware Indians who welcomed the Moravians to theregion, but it was transformed into a thriving center of busi-ness on the Ohio and Erie Canal in the 19th century. TheTemperance Tavern Museum, built in 1841, was a stopover forcanal and stagecoach travelers and still has the massive fire-place and long walnut table where travelers were fed. Legendhas is as well that the fireplace contains a hiding place forescaped slaves on the Underground Railroad. Two sports iconswho hailed from Newcomerstown - legendary baseball pitcherCy Young and renowned football coach Woody Hayes - haverooms dedicated to them.

Next door, the Olde Main Street Museum and Social Centeris a little village unto itself with 23 reconstructed storefrontspulling items from former businesses in the downtown, rang-ing from a huge headdress of electric curlers from Helen’sBeauty Shop to a machine serving “electrocuted hot dogs” atthe town’s luncheonette. There’s even an old-time saloon thatonce faced the wrath of Carrie Nation’s axe.

NEW PHILADELPHIAThere are good reasons why New Philadelphia was once

named one of “Ohio’s Quaint Small Towns” by OhioMagazine. There’s a classic town square dominated by themassive county courthouse, with its huge dome and monu-ment of a Civil War soldier standing guard on a high pedestal.Downtown businesses include an Art Deco-style movie houseand a popular coffee shop. Wide avenues, meant to mimicthose in “Old” Philadelphia, are now flanked with well-tended19th-century homes.

And the town’s park, nestled into a hillside, hasan alluring little lake and amini-amusement parkcomplete with a Ferriswheel and miniature trainride. Anyone who spenttheir childhood here is aptto get misty-eyed remem-bering Tuscora Park’s carousel, with 36 hand-carved horses,14 oil paintings, and music from a Wurlitzer band organ.

New Philadelphia is also the site where the county’s historygot its start. In 1772, Moravian missionaries foundedSchoenbrunn, the state’s first European settlement, to bringChristianity to the Delaware Indians. When the Revolutionerupted, the neutral Moravians were in the crosshairs of boththe Americans and British. Today, a reconstructedSchoenbrunn village showcases the first school and churchbuilt west of the Alleghenies and the original cemetery,“God’s Acre.”

Not far away, a magnificent hilltop amphitheater is the sitefor “Trumpet in the Land,” an outdoor drama that highlightsthe inspirational story of the Moravians in the form of a“symphonic drama” with plentiful music and dancing to com-plement the action, which includes fires, gunfights, and a re-enactment of the Gnadenhutten Massacre. Its moving finalehas been known to bring spectators to tears.

SUGARCREEK AREA Sugarcreek calls itself “The Little Switzerland of Ohio” and

for good reason. The Swiss heritage of its early settlers isreflected in the chalet-like architecture in its quaint down-town, complete with murals depicting alpine scenery. The“World’s Largest Cuckoo Clock” draws appreciative crowdsevery half hour with itstwirling dancers and oom-pah band, and once a yearthe Ohio Swiss Festivalcelebrates the Old Worldwith yodeling and Swisscostume contests and the“Steintossen,” an eventwhere burly men - andwomen! - compete to toss agiant rock the farthest dis-tance.

Sugarcreek is located in Ohio’s Amish Country, so you’relikely to see and hear the clop-clop-clop of a horse and buggythrough its streets as these friendly folks come to town toshop. Drive a short distance out of town to see them at workin their fields on their tidy farms, complete with red barns, purple martin birdhouses, and windmills or one families’extensive collection of Colman Lanterns. Don’t leave withoutsampling some of the best Swiss cheese in the country orenjoying Amish cuisine in the area’s restaurants.

Get an overview of Sugarcreek’s unique history at the AlpineHills Museum, which has dioramas depicting an Amishkitchen; cheese making, woodworking and blacksmith work-shops; and a display about “The Budget,” a local newspaperstill received by Amish and Mennonite readers worldwide.Just outside town, the Ohio Star Theater has offered high-quality drama and musical comedies with Amish themes since2012 and will open a new 500-seat theater this year in theDutch Valley complex of shops, restaurants, and a hotel.

The nearby town of Baltic offers a new winery inside a his-toric mill, and in the crossroads village of Ragersville, visitthe town’s Historical Society to learn about Alta Weiss, afemale minor league baseball pitcher in the early 20th centurywho called Ragersville home.

ZOAR AND BOLIVAR AREA The picture-perfect village of Zoar this year celebrates the

bicentennial of its founding in 1817 by German religious sep-aratists who fled the Old Country to escape persecution.Shortly after arriving, they formed a communal society thatlasted until 1898, one of the longest and most successful com-munal endeavors anywhere.

The village still looksmuch like the Zoaritesleft it, with a hilltopschool house, a fewlog structures, solidGerman-lookinghomes, a cupola-topped hotel thatwelcomed presidentsand millionaires, and amagnificent centralgarden with religious symbolism - Be sure to walk theStraight and Narrow Path to the Tree of Life!

Better yet, visit when 10 of the original buildings are openand staffed by volunteers in period clothing, perform suchtasks as blacksmithing, baking, or tinsmithing. New attrac-tions this year include an art gallery inside a renovated homewith paintings of historic Zoar.

Nearby Bolivar is thesite of Fort Laurens,Ohio’s onlyRevolutionary Warfort, celebrating itscentennial as a statepark in 2017. The out-line of the original logstockade is still visible, and a modern-daymuseum tells the storyof the fort’s original purpose as a staging area for an attack onthe British at Fort Detroit. Exhibits tell of the hardships suf-fered by the soldiers, who suffered a lengthy siege by NativeAmericans, and artifacts unearthed by excavations are on dis-play, including the very bullet that killed one of the soldiersburied in the adjacent cemetery.

The Tomb of the Unknown Patriot of the AmericanRevolution is also onsite, and The Ohio and Erie CanalTowpath Trail, an 80-mile long recreational trail, passesalongside the beautiful Tuscarawas River.

A more lighthearted destination in Bolivar is Elizabeth’sDollhouse Museum with 50 miniature homes. NearbyStrasburg is home to the Lynn Theater, the oldest drive in the-ater in Ohio and the second oldest in the world.

“Ilive in what many people think is one of the most beautifulcities in the world, but I think my home county is just asbeautiful. I really look forward to my trip home each sum-

mer to visit fam-ily and friends and to refresh and rejuvenate inthe beautiful scenery of Tuscarawas County. For me, there’snothing more tranquil than the hills, fields, and trees in the coun-ty’s countryside or just watching the Tuscarawas River sparkleand flow in the sunlight or seeing the sailboats and clouds pass-ing over Atwood Lake - it’s all a welcome escape from crowded, noisy city living. And the people are so friendly! I just wish Icould visit more often.

Know before you go…Weather in the Tuscarawas Valley matches much of Ohio’s, with

warm and humid summers that are preceded by rainy springs thatbeget the blossoms of May and June and are followed by sunnyautumns with spectacular displays of fall foliage. Winters can bechilly, but our snowfall average of 25 inches is substantially lessthan received in Ohio’s “Snow Belt” to our north. See the mostup-to-date weather at www.TuscWeather.net
