The board members announced that donors can now dedicate engraved bricks to the project. The bricks will display donors’ names permanently on a donor wall in the courtyard of the new facility. The donation amount is $250 for a 4” × 8” brick and $500 for an 8” × 8” brick. Several project sponsors attended the ceremony, including Champion Sponsors Hu Shao Lean and Cecilia Sze; Visionary Sponsors Leeshan and James Birney of Stone Mountain Properties and Louis and Jessica Lien of USA Sports, Inc.; and Luminary Sponsors Sunny Chang of Formosa Africa Enterprise LP, the Honorable Theresa Chang and Peter Chang, MD, PhD, Charlene Chuang, and Crown Mark, Inc. (represented at the ceremony by Victoria Ma). Breaking Ground on New Horizons

On Saturday May 14 the Chinese Community Center (CCC) held agroundbreaking ceremony to commemorate the start of construction for theNew Horizons expansion project The board members announced that donorscan now dedicate engraved bricks to the project The bricks will display donorsrsquonames permanently on a donor wall in the courtyard of the new facility Thedonation amount is $250 for a 4rdquo times 8rdquo brick and $500 for an 8rdquo times 8rdquo brick

Building Asian American Civic Engagement

Houston Endowment has awarded a grant to the Chinese Community Center(CCC) for a new project called the Empowering Communities Initiative (ECI)The purpose of ECI is to increase the capacity for Greater Houstonrsquos diverseAsian American communities to participate in civic engagement Civicengagementmdashwhich includes volunteerism voting and other forms ofparticipation in the democratic processmdashis widely seen as a symbol of full selfshyincorporation into American society and offers many benefits for society atlarge such as fostering communication across group lines and encouragingimmigrants to contribute their own knowledge and skills toward solving publicproblems

ECI will be led collaboratively by a committee of representatives from severalnonprofits serving Greater Houstons Asian American communities includingthe Chinese Community Center Boat People SOS Emerge USA OCAshyGreaterHouston and VN Teamwork Asian Americans Advancing Justice| AAJC willprovide consultation and help connect ECIrsquos work in Greater Houston tonational Asian American civic engagement efforts

The organizations participating in ECI will work together to provide civiceducation citizenship instruction and ldquoget out the voterdquo efforts to 10000people in Greater Houston during the first year of the project and will hosttrainings to strengthen the capacity of local nonprofits to provide civicengagement services to their clients

On April 15 State Farm presented a $12000 Good Neighbor Citizenship grantto the Chinese Community Center (CCC) in support of its Financial Literacyand Homebuyer Education programs These programs offer free financialeducation firstshytime homebuyer education workshops and oneshyonshyone creditcounseling and financial coaching They are a critical part of CCCrsquos efforts tohelp individuals and families from lowshy and moderateshyincome householdsachieve financial stability by making a longshyterm commitment to budgetingsaving and using credit effectively

Stars and Stripes Summer Camp

This summer the theme of the Chinese Community Centerrsquos Youth SummerCamp is Stars and Stripes A Summer of Civic Engagement In addition toeducational activities designed to minimize summer learning loss studentshave been enjoying participating in special activities and events related to civicengagement These opportunities include taking part in student electionslearning about the history of the United States understanding the importanceof voting and advocacy and interacting with elected officials and governmentrepresentatives

The Youth Summer Camp also features many other fun and educationalactivities including Chinese classes science technology engineering andmath (STEM) activities book clubs and much more

The Youth Summer Camp will be running until August 12 and itrsquosnot too late to sign up For more information about the camp please visitccchoustonorgsummercamp

Day of Caring with Deloitte

On June 10 twenty employees from Deloitte visited the Chinese CommunityCenter (CCC) to carry out a volunteer project through United Way of GreaterHoustonrsquos Day of Caring program The volunteers started the day by engagingyoung children enrolled in CCCrsquos Early Learning Center with fun andeducational games and toys designed to introduce them to science conceptssuch as balance weight gravity force motion and spatial relationships Notonly were the children fascinated by the toys and games but Deloitte donatedthe items so the children will be able to play and learn with them throughouttheir time in the Early Learning Center The volunteers also added a fresh coatof paint to the centers walls and cleaned the kiddie pools in preparation forthe summertime

It was indeed a day full of caring and support thanks to Deloitte and UnitedWay of Greater Houston

On May 23 Enterprise Holdings Foundation awarded a $4000 grant to theChinese Community Center (CCC) The grant will be used to support theoperation of CCCrsquos programs which include child care workforcedevelopment senior services and Chinese and English language instructionEnterprise Holdings Foundation is sponsored by the Enterprise Alamo andNational car rental companies and its purpose is to give back to thecommunities where the customers and employees of these companies live andwork Thank you to Enterprise Holdings Foundation for this support

The Chinese Community Center (CCC) congratulates Kelvin Tam for being therecipient of the 2016 Helen Chang Education Scholarship Kelvin also receivedthe 2016 Joint Chinese College Alumni Association Scholarship

Kelvin who graduated from CCCrsquos Chinese School in May showed exemplaryperformance and perfect attendance throughout his time in the program Atthe graduation ceremony he led his classmates in the performance of aChinese song that he arranged for multiple instruments

Kelvin will attend the University of Texas at Austin this fall CCC wishes Kelvinand all of our Chinese School graduates the best of luck and success

CCC thanks Jarvis Cheung ScD and Frank Chou PhD for serving on ourBoard of Directors Jarvis and Frank are leaving the Board because they havecompleted the maximum number of terms CCC has truly benefited from theirleadership and expertise over many years and their contributions have beeninstrumental in helping CCC meet the needs of diverse people throughoutGreater Houston

Darryl de Mello joins CCC as our new Fund Development Director afterspending more than four years with the Houston Symphony where he mostrecently served as Director of the Annual Fund Prior to that Darryl served in adevelopment capacity for The Kennedy Center for the Performing ArtsNational Symphony Orchestra Washington National Opera and Los AngelesPhilharmonic Darryl received his undergraduate degree in Music Performancefrom the University of North Texas and a Master of Business Administrationdegree from the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University

CCC welcomes Darryl and is very excited to have him join our team

Stars and Stripes Summer Camp

This summer the theme of the Chinese Community Centerrsquos Youth SummerCamp is Stars and Stripes A Summer of Civic Engagement In addition toeducational activities designed to minimize summer learning loss studentshave been enjoying participating in special activities and events related to civicengagement These opportunities include taking part in student electionslearning about the history of the United States understanding the importanceof voting and advocacy and interacting with elected officials and governmentrepresentatives

The Youth Summer Camp also features many other fun and educationalactivities including Chinese classes science technology engineering andmath (STEM) activities book clubs and much more

The Youth Summer Camp will be running until August 12 and itrsquosnot too late to sign up For more information about the camp please visitccchoustonorgsummercamp

Day of Caring with Deloitte

On June 10 twenty employees from Deloitte visited the Chinese CommunityCenter (CCC) to carry out a volunteer project through United Way of GreaterHoustonrsquos Day of Caring program The volunteers started the day by engagingyoung children enrolled in CCCrsquos Early Learning Center with fun andeducational games and toys designed to introduce them to science conceptssuch as balance weight gravity force motion and spatial relationships Notonly were the children fascinated by the toys and games but Deloitte donatedthe items so the children will be able to play and learn with them throughouttheir time in the Early Learning Center The volunteers also added a fresh coatof paint to the centers walls and cleaned the kiddie pools in preparation forthe summertime

It was indeed a day full of caring and support thanks to Deloitte and UnitedWay of Greater Houston

On May 23 Enterprise Holdings Foundation awarded a $4000 grant to theChinese Community Center (CCC) The grant will be used to support theoperation of CCCrsquos programs which include child care workforcedevelopment senior services and Chinese and English language instructionEnterprise Holdings Foundation is sponsored by the Enterprise Alamo andNational car rental companies and its purpose is to give back to thecommunities where the customers and employees of these companies live andwork Thank you to Enterprise Holdings Foundation for this support
