Samujana Villas2006-Present

Koh Samui, Thailand

2006 - 2014

Samujana is located in the north east of the resort island of Koh Samui. The magnificent site has almost 90m of elevation from beach front to summit of the hill and has an aspect which takes in the view of the entire island and the small islands located in the gulf of Thailand beyond.

Gfab are designing 28 villas each tailored to its unique topographical conditions and the requirements of the individual owner. Each villa is set on a 1 rai plot (1600sqm) within a master plan designed by Gfab.

Each villa averages 450sqm living space with private swimming pools. The accommodation offered is typically 4 bedroom/suites with en suite bathrooms, a study which converts to a 5th bedroom, naturally ventilated living & dining rooms and air conditioned rooms for audio/visual activities.

The first 6 villas were completed in 2006. From 2006-present, Addiena has been the project architect for the 20+ remaining villas. Having completed 20 villas on its first stage in 2011, currently, Samujana is undergoing its phase 2 development, consists of 8 villas, due to finish in December 2014.

Samujana Villa 5 was completed in 2012. It’s a second home for a Britain’s well-known documentary cameraman. It has 3 lower bedrooms and one master bedroom that located at the swimming pool level. Its most desirable feature is the pool room, wine cellar, and cinema at lower floor level, which connected to each other. The rooms are only separated by glass partitions/sliding doors.

Samujana Villa 5

In this project, as a project architect, Addiena was involved in the whole stages of design. From preliminary design, design development and construction, until design supervision.

Samujana Villa 9

Samujana villa 9 was completed in 2011, located in 1 rai plot (1600 sqm) also in Samujana villas site. The villa extend horizontally as a respond to the shape of the site. Through its carefully composed entry sequence, with series of local vegetations at different level of planter boxes, series of pond as the element of water, and a combination of rocks and white walls, one may enter the villa. At the top of the entry stairs, one can experience roof pond that extend to the ocean.

Samujana villa 9 was built for a japanese owner. It has certain functions that are different from other villas in the Samujana project. Other than its 3 bedrooms, at lower floor, it has a vast entertainment room, which is to be used as a karaoke lounge with pool table, bar, toilets, and a separated cinema room. Also at this level, there are courtyards for outdoor activities.

Living, dining & kitchen connected with swimming pool & pool deck are located at ground level. Along with service area with separate entrance attached to it. At this level, there are study/4th bedroom, and master bedroom with private roof deck. Another roof deck can be accessed from the main entrance, which located at top floor.

In this project, as a project architect, Addiena was involved in the whole stages of design. From preliminary design, design development and construction, until design supervision.

Samujana Villa 24

Included in the phase 2 development and currently well under construction, this villa is scheduled to be finished December 2014. One of two double-plot villas within Samujana. Villa 24 has the largest built space of any Samujana villa at an impressive 1808 SQ.M. Ultimately a home for a big family, as it showcases eight bedrooms. Providing everybody with plenty of space for enjoying the sunrises and sunsets over the ocean as this villa has both south and west views over the Gulf of Thailand. The villa comes complete with an outdoor dining sala, private gym, cinema, steam room and large infinity edge pool and Jacuzzi.

As a project architect, leading a team of 3 architects, Addiena was involved in the whole stages of design. From preliminary design, design development and construction, to design supervision.

Samujana Villa 26

Included in phase 2 of the development and currently well under construction, this villa is perfectly placed to enjoy the view of the nearby smaller islands from the southern view and then to enjoy the sun setting from its western view. Offering five large bedrooms and six bathrooms, this three-storey villa also houses an impressive large interior garden, private gym, and a cinema. The villa also has two modern kitchens designed with entertainment in mind. The infinity edge pool is long enough for laps and has a garden area adjacent to it.

As a project architect, leading a team of 3 architects, Addiena was involved in the whole stages of design. From preliminary design, design development and construction, to design supervision.

Samujana HotelSamujana Hotel is essentially treated as a villa based developed with “keys” composed of small villas with private plunge pools. The idea being to offer a “mini” Samujana experience. A small number of larger units are included as the site allows which are set over 2 floors.

The Hotel runs on the same cardinal geometry (NSEW) as the tennis court which will give pretty decent views. The villas themselves make best use of the slopes available and the progression through the property (ie to the keys) is intended to be something like that through the larger villas, with pathways dotted with greenery and spaces intended for sculptures and artworks, enlivening the journey.

The spa deliberately placed at the rear corner of the property – it doesn’t need views, and in the position shown ensures that it can be used by outside guests and Samujana (big villas) guests without passing through the hotel itself.

Large rock and tree has been retained as something of a anchor to the property. This rises from a reflecting pool and the lobby and the various additional amenities (spa, gym, meeting room, shop, library) are distributed around this, off covered walkways. A stair rises from the reflecting pool to access the bar/lounge/restaurant/pool level which would be just a touch higher than Frasers pool next door. Essentially we have conceived of this level as being something like an oversized main living area (of a villa) with a 30m pool and extensive lounging areas.

The villa “keys” comprise what is essentially a bedroom/robe/en suite arrangement plus a covered living area with small bar/kitchen and a plunge pool with deck area for sunbathing etc. One enters via a small reflecting pool court and the bedroom/robe/en suite again draws light from a private garden court.

Samujana Hotel will be phase 3 of the development which will start in 2015. Addiena was involved in the preliminary design as a project architect.

Dalaman Tunku House2014

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

A second house for a well-known businessman in Kuala Lumpur. It consists of 7 bedrooms, located on ground floor and first floor. Situated in a significant sloping site, the house was designed to follow its contour. This 4 storeys house also accommodates a generous family/piano room, large living-dining area, wine cellar, maids quarter, a gym, swimming pool, and sala area. Gardens, roof planters, and roof terraces are spread throughout the building.

The elevation was designed based upon the sunpath as no rooms will be lit by unwanted sunlight.

Addiena was involved as a project architect in the preliminary design, also managing a team of 3 architects to complete its first stage of design.

Nata Residence2009

Bali, Indonesia

Nata Residence is a 5 bedrooms house located in a large housing complex in the middle of the city. The plot is approximately 24x25 sqm with no existing structures and features, it’s a flat land with walls from sorrounding neighbours as its boundaries and 10 m wide street at the front of the site. The site is facing north. The client wanted to have a modern house that stands out in the neighbourhood.

It is very important to have natural light and air flow to the house, but not too much (unwanted) heat and afternoon sunlight, also, privacy is the main factor that the client wish to have. Skylights and screens are used to have natural light and air flow, while keeping the unwanted heat and light of the afternoon sunlight out. The screens also maintained privacy and created unique composition throughout.

Client is a single businessman with many relatives who live out of town and constantly visiting. Client requested no front terraces and one separate entry pavillion. The house will be used mostly as family gathering place, so it has to have large living-dining room & more private leisure room for client, if relatives from out of town are visiting.

Master bedroom is located at second floor with large wardrobe and ensuite. The library is located also at the leisure area above, providing safety at stair area. Roof terrace is added to have more space for friends or family gathering with beautiful sunset view.

Rumah Ramah Hotel2013

Bali, Indonesia

Rumah Ramah Hotel

It is designed as a reaction to alienating mass tourism that currently is happening in Bali. It is a solution for locals to gain profit and compete with international hotel chains.

Rumah Ramah Hotel is a research design project to receive Master degree from Utrecht School of The Arts (HKU). The concept of Rumah Ramah is the reuse of unfinished hotel buildings in Bali as a hotel/housing combination, where tourists can stay with families and get closer to local culture.

Rumah Ramah will empower locals and provide authentic experience for tourists. It will have residential units for locals with business spaces. Therefore, not just any locals can host their guests, but locals with small businesses and of course integrity to serve their guests. As each local has different shops and qualities to offer to their guests, guests will have diverse experience. Guests are expected to extend their stay because of this.

With these hotels, the aim is to achieve as much exchange as possible between tourists and locals, including: cultural and skills exchange, products and services that locals offer, and ultimately empowering the locals by these exchanges. Rumah Ramah hotels will also have an open market dedicated to outside local businesses and will be open daily to outside tourists. Throughout the year inhabitants are expected to profit from their shops and rooms that they rent for guests.

The Birds Shelter2012

Utrecht, Netherlands

The Birds Shelter

What was once used as a Kraanbouw is currently vacant for humans but not for the birds. The birds has been living there since its vacancy in 2002. The transformation is to capture the nature in the city by The Birds Shelter.

Addiena designed the Kraanbouw as a place for birds to dwell and for people with bird-feeding hobby to take care of the birds.

The existing structure of the Kraanbouw is maintained while the zinc that was used as a cover is removed.

In replace is a screen made from recycled wooden pallets which nailed together and has been cut in a pattern which allows entry for the birds. It also provides enough light and ventilation for the birds.

The place for nesting the birds is made from recycled wooden crates. They are stacked and nailed together also in a pattern.

The Kraanbouw is situated at the Mewerdekanaal in Kanaalweg street, near the ophaalbrug, Utrecht. Its sorrounding area is a lively neighborhood consists of housing, offices, park, cafes, cultural house and schools.

It was built in 1978 and used to transport goods from boats to the soy factory. It has been used for more than 20 years. After the municipality bought the soy factory in 2001, the kraanbouw became vacant.

Variant, Use and Resident’s Opinions of Public Spaces in a City Village

Abstract of Research

City village that grows unplanned and as cramped dwellings, often blamed and justified as a sign of un-proper living. However, because the city village reflects self-help development, freedom, and high solidarity, it succeeded in creating a living, working, and recreation space by its own dwellers without government’s help. This research tries to define shapes, activities, and resident’s opinions of Public spaces in the city village.

A research on the use of public space in Kampung Kota Braga, Bandung. It is conducted by Addiena in the year 2005-2006 to receive her bachelor degree in Architecture on 2006. This research has received a perfect score and it has been selected and presented in ITB Faculty of Planning and Civil Engineering Seminar in 2006.

The typology of public spaces (its dimensions and elements), activities and dwellers opinions in and of it, ownerships and its development trends, are derived from the analysis that held in this research.

There are 4 types of corridor open spaces and 3 types of square open spaces that found in the subject of observation which have been categorized based on the shapes and building boundaries.

Stella McCartney Fashion Centre

2004

Bandung, Indonesia

Stella McCartney Fashion CentreBandung, Indonesia

In the year 2004, Bandung, especially Jl. Dago, the most important street in Bandung, were lacking proper entertainment facilities to accommodate huge creativities that the youngsters has to offer. Bandung, often called as Paris van Java, is a city with high development in fashion industries. Derived from these facts, Addiena designed a hip Fashion centre, as her 4th year design studio assignment. Using Stella McCartney as a young and hip fashion label at the time.

The functions of the building are: Parking area & maintenance at ground level; Retail, lobby & lounge at first level which extend to green open space to browse and linger and amphitheatre to accommodate street artists; Cafes & catwalk that extend to long balconies at second level; Discotheque at third level.

The design concept is Nature Abstracted, which used the shape of nature (leafs) to respond its site shape and orientation. Also to accomodate Stella McCartney fashion design concept which is soft and edgy, feminine and sharp. The building, not just leaf-shaped, it behave as one too.

It consumes natural light and air flow throughout. It safes energy and naturally build in the middle of the city, without raping the soil by creating basement. First two main levels, used openable glass & screens to ensure air & light flow. The third level used openable skylights.
