6 2016 NEBRASKA WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS MEET NOTES

THE LAST TIME

January 17, 2015Nebraska 197.125, Penn State 196.025

Powered by a program-record 49.75 on vault and Nebraska’s first perfect 10.00 on vault since 2011, the No. 8-ranked women’s gymnastics team exploded for a 197.125 to defeat Penn State. The Nittany Lions picked up a 196.025 against the Huskers in front of a crowd of 1,212 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center that evening. The team’s vault score was the highest in the country at that point in the season. The Huskers put together an impressive team showing as they collected four event titles and the all-around competition.

The Big Red were led by a trio of powerful performances across the board. Ashley Lambert paved the way on vault with a perfect 10.00, only the second in the nation at that point in the season. The sophomore also tied for the bars title with a career-high 9.85. Hollie Blanske also tied for the bars title with Lambert and Penn State’s Briannah Tsang and Sidney Sanabria-Robles. Blanske produced a notable all-around performance as she added the floor title en-route to the all-around crown (39.50). Freshman Grace Williams delivered another stellar beam performance hitting a 9.925 score to take the title.

The Huskers came out firing on vault in their first rotation, earning a school record score of 49.75. NU was sparked by freshman Kamerin Moore who notched a 9.90 score and put in motion a magical lineup. Desire’ Stephens followed Moore sticking a career-high 9.95, while Blanske soared to a 9.925. Lambert went fifth in the rotation and tallied her perfect 10 to put the fans on their feet. Jessie DeZiel anchored the lineup hitting a 9.975 to tie her career-high score and round out the historical lineup.

Penn State posted a 49.025 on bars in their first event of the evening. The Nittany Lions were led by Tsang and Sanabria-Robles who tied for the event title. With one rotation in the books, the Huskers held an impressive 49.75 – 49.025 lead over Penn State.

Nebraska moved to bars in the second rotation recording a 48.875 team score. Blanske and Lambert both stuck identical 9.85 scores to take the event title. Both freshman earned new career high marks on the event as Moore notched a 9.825 score and Danielle Breen added on a 9.75.

The Nittany Lions earned a 49.275 vault in their second rotation. Penn State was led by Sidney Sanabria-Robles, who captured a team-high 9.90. Nebraska extended its lead over Penn State after two events, coming in at 98.625 - 98.30.

NU bounced back in their third rotation on beam, earning a solid team score of 49.25. Nebraska was led by two career-high marks from two freshmen; 9.925 from Williams and 9.85 from Breen. DeZiel tacked on a 9.85, while Jennifer Lauer sealed the effort on the event earning a 9.825.

PSU picked up a 48.75 on floor in the third rotation of the evening. The Nittany Lions were paced by Emma Sibson, who earned a 9.90 on the event. With only one event remaining, Nebraska led Penn State 147.875 – 147.050.

The Huskers sealed their victory on floor in the final rotation, earning a season-high 49.25 as a team. The Big Red was fueled by Blanske’s 9.925 routine. Moore and Stephens both tacked on 9.85 scores, while DeZiel put up a 9.825.

Penn State tallied a 48.975 team beam score led by Briannah Tsang’s 9.90 performance. The Nittany Lions’ squad finished with a 196.025 on the evening but it would not be enough to overcome Nebraska’s 197.125.

Nebraska’s 1-2-3 punch of Blanske, DeZiel and Lambert went head-to-head in the all-around competition. Blanske took her first crown with a 39.500 score, while Lambert took third place (39.375) and DeZiel fifth (39.25). Penn State was led by Sidney Sanabria-Robles in the all-around competition who earned second place with a score of 39.425.

LOOKING AHEAD The Huskers will compete in their home opener on Saturday, Jan. 23, continuing Big Ten competition against Rutgers for the Double Dual. The meet is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. CT. The Nebraska men’s gymnastics team will compete simultaneously at the Devaney Center against Air Force. When Nebraska Head Coach Dan Kendig was hired in 1993, his goals were to return the Nebraska gymnastics program to national prominence and to have Nebraska in a position to win a national title, while also maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence for Husker student-athletes.Kendig has not only accomplished those goals, but made them a standard for excellence in his 23-year tenure, as Nebraska is considered among the nation’s elite in both the gym and the classroom. In the 22 seasons of the existence of the NCAA Super Six Finals, Nebraska is one of only six programs, along with Georgia, Alabama, UCLA, Utah and Michigan, to qualify for nine or more team finals, and the Huskers have earned NCAA Championship berths in 15 of the past 18 years. Under Kendig, 40 NU gymnasts have combined to earn 139 All-America honors since 1995, nearly 10 times NU’s previous total during the program’s first 18 seasons. At the conference level, the results are equally as impressive. Nebraska has won 13 of the past 19 conference titles, including an unprecedented six straight Big Eight/Big 12 crowns from 1994 to 1999. In addition, Nebraska has had at least one individual conference champion in each of the past 19 seasons and 10 all-around champions, while seven gymnasts have been conference newcomers of the year.

Since Kendig arrived at NU, his teams have compiled an outstanding 514-195-4 (.722) record, including a 335-75-2 regular-season record and a 179-120-2 postseason mark. He has also earned national, regional or conference coach-of-the-year honors in 10 of the past 19 seasons.Eleven of Nebraska’s nation-best 15 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards in women’s gymnastics have come under Kendig, while he has also produced two NCAA Woman of the Year finalists -- Shelly Bartlett in 1997 and Richelle Simpson in 2005. In addition, Kendig coached Joy Taylor when she became the 1996 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year, as well as Simpson, who was recognized with a 2005 NCAA Top Eight Award. Kendig has guided numerous other academic all-conference and NACGC/W Scholastic All-America honorees in his time at Nebraska. For his accomplishments with the Husker gymnastics program, Kendig was honored by his peers as the NCAA Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2003.
