  • Water. Clean water. It is the source of life for everything on this planet. And this year it is the focus of DellArtes season. We recently started a collaboration with the Wiyot tribe. In the process, we have titled this years festival The River, Our Home. In Wiyot, Lalilh Jouwra Hinarr Daduk. (You will see all of the signage at DellArte this summer in both English and Wiyot). From the Mad River (Baduwat) that flows just down the road to the Pacific Ocean, we take inspiration from this place, its peoples, its stories, its nature when we create original work that we call theatre of place.

Ping Chong, a great theatre artist wrote in his World Theatre Day message this year:

The very act of theatre-making is a fundamentally utopian act. Creating ensemble is creating community in the rehearsal room; performance is creating community in public. Artists and audiences share collective human experience, contact, curiosity, and today perhaps more urgently than ever, connection. In this time of profound discord and disconnection, of grave injustice around the world (and the resistance to same) and of economic and ecological imbalance, how do we in the theatre, we foot soldiers of conscience, help to shepherd in a new century of hope, compassion, and reconnection? By doing what we do best. By turning our investigative lens on the issues of our time, by using our art to create safe spaces to discuss and resolve conflict and by providing the saving grace of humor, empathy, and understanding in the face of all obstacles. What we do, what we can do, is more urgently needed than ever before.

What we will do this summer is to bring you some trademark DellArte comedy in a new work about water called The Big Thirst, by founding artistic director Joan Schirle. Our big top tent will be home to a family series, we will experiment with new work in our Mad Lab, we will heat up the place with a Red Light cabaret, and will be host to the Humboldt Folklife Festival and the Eureka Symphony.

We will award the 2016 Prize of Hope to Cornerstone Theater from Los Angeles, an international award that DellArte and the Danish Institute For Popular Theatre award every year. The Prize of Hope is summed up in a single sentence: It is given to an individual or theatre who has worked for the hope of humanity; daring, loving, vulgar, serious, poetic!

That is what we aspire to do here at DellArte. So we welcome you to the 26th Mad River Festival. We thank all of the amazing people and businesses who generously support us, especially Pierson Building Center, for helping make this festival possible. You will find their names in this program and we encourage you to support them. THANK YOU for coming to the festival. Without you it would not be possible. Enjoy!

Welcome to the 26th Mad River Festival!

  • Welcome to the 26th annual Mad River Festival. As DellArtes Board President, I am honored to be a part of this dynamic, international organization. Pierson Building Center is this years festival sponsor. Many thanks to Pierson Building Center who has sponsored the Mad River Festival since 2007! Special thanks also to Wildberries Marketplace and PG&E, whose financial support helps us bring unique theatre, music, and family events to our community.

Founded in 1971 in Berkeley, DellArte moved to Blue Lake in 1974, as its founders believed artists should immerse themselves in rural communities to be inspired by and grounded in the natural living world. Since then, DellArte has been an international trailblazer in Theatre of Place, which are works of performance inspired by, for, and with the communities in which they are created. The DellArte Company landed on the national map with original works about current issues, the people, and the other living creatures of our unique part of the planet. Performances at a world-class level made our local stories accessible from L.A. to Baltimore and beyond. Works like the Korbel series, The Scar Tissue Mysteries, Wild Card, and Mary Jane: The Musical built a loyal regional following and international recognition.

The James Irvine Foundation recognized DellArte as one of the 13 Cornerstone Arts Organizations in California for connecting theatre and community via a regional arts center and community partnerships. In 2015, the Irvine Foundation funded a multi-year initiative to deepen our community arts engagement work, and supported our work this year with the Wiyot Tribe at Table Bluff.

On June 10th, DellArtes newest venture in film, Mary Jane A Musical Potumentary, will have a world premiere at the Eureka Theater. Based on the highest grossing show in DellArtes history, Mary Jane: The Musical, Emmy Award Nominee John Howarth created the film as part musical and part documentary. It shines a light on the evolving cannabis cultivation culture that has driven Humboldt Countys underground economy for decades and created an internationally renowned brand. The film features sixteen original songs written by twelve local songwriters, as well as a bevy of local cameos and a scene starring the infamous Ed Asner. This film is a sure-to-be Humboldt cult classic! See more information at www.maryjanemusical.com or dellarte.com.

With grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and the California Arts Council, DellArte developed a series of creative exchanges and theatre works for 2016 called The River, Our Home. This focus brought new partnerships and more awareness of the place in which we live. Enjoy all the shows of the festival, and keep a special eye on Dolly Madisons sleuthing in Joan Schirles The Big Thirstbecause we all need to be involved in caring for our world.

  • In The Big Thirst, a detective is challenged by an elusive, watery mystery; her mystery-writer sister doesnt see whats hidden in plain sight; her activist sister sees too much and feels compelled to solve all the problems, all at once. In the face of an issue so huge, so complex, so basic to our survival as water, the mystery might be what can I do about all this? For as we start to unravel the threads of this mystery, its clear that water is related to climate change is related to pollution is related to loss of the commons is related to social justice is related to the future of human and animal life on the planet. When confronted with such massive stuff, we need laughter! The Big Thirst is first of all a comedy about three sisters, each trying in their own bumbling way to do something constructive with their lives.

The most duh-inducing thing I learned in researching this play is that there is no new water. We have all the water were ever going to get. We are indeed drinking dinosaur pee! What went into dinosaurs and came out of them has simply transformed itself over and over again for billions of years. From liquid to gas to frozen, the change in those elements is amazing. In the ground, in the air, in the atmosphere, in the oceans, in icebergs, or at the poles-- things go up, go down, turn to ice, turn to rain, but its the same water its always been.

Finite. The question is, how are we going to protect the availability for all who need it, protect the cleanliness of that water so we dont drink toxic sludge, and can we look out for all the interests that need waterfrom farmers to fish to those populations whove depended for centuries upon water as a source of life, as their home?

There is no bit of water in the western states that has not been impacted by humans manipulating it in some way, through dams, diversions, allocations. The cultivation of water-hungry species--almonds, pistachios, marijuana, wine, even rice--is affecting state politics and allocation.

On a global level millions of people are without clean drinking water; its usually young women who may

  • twice a day walk miles, to get drinking water for their families. (It means those girls dont go to school.) So, how to provide for the worlds populations with sufficient clean drinking water is a mystery to be solved. Even within our own country, can we assure that our drinking water is clean and safe? Do rivers have a voice?

I know who you are, dear audience, those of you fans and friends and who have long supported our work by showing up and paying attention. Youre no dummies--many of you know a lot about the water issues facing local watersheds, the state, and the planet. Some of you restore salmon habitat, protect our fisheries, practice sustainable agriculture, etc. This play is a thank-you to those whose work benefits all of us even when it feels like swimming upstream.

A year ago, when we were talking about making a new play, California was in a bad drought and water seemed like an urgent issue on which to hang a story. Though recent local rainfall has us saying gratefully, Its raining! Great! Whew!!, nonetheless, the global water table is at an all-time low. The wars fought over oil will eventually be fought over H2O. And what El Nio gives, it can take away

In this year of The River, Our Home DellArte thinks about our relationship to flowing water. Our partnership with the Wiyot tribe helps us come closer to understanding water as not just life-giving, but as Lifeas the veins and arteries of the earth.

Thanks to Thomas Dunklin, Conrad Bishop, David Simpson, Jane Lapiner,

Mel Kreb, Kristi Frederick, Deborah Slater, Michael Berger, and many others who shared their watery insights.

In its 30 years, Cornerstone Theater Company has commissioned more than 50 playwrights, produced over 80 new works, trained over 2000 students in their methodology, and worked with tens of thousands of

    people across the United States.

Their work for cultural diversity and human justice via a unique interactive theatre methodology makes them unique in the landscape of American theatre. They work in communities that no other theatre

serves. They tackle hard questions of the human condition with the spirit of collaboration and the idea that many voices make all possible. On this, Cornerstones 30th anniversary, it seems fitting to award them with the

  • DellArte International Company and School of Physical Theatre is located on the ancestral territory of the Wiyot Tribe. In 2015, DellArte staff and Tribal adminis-trators met to discuss ways we can share knowledge between the two entities.

In January 2016, our collaboration began with Tribal Chairman, Ted Hernandez and William Sonny Frank IV who shared stories and songs at the third annual Humboldt Steelhead Days Fish Tales Cabaret.

In February, an arts engagement project began with the Wiyot Tribes Tsek Houdaqh (where the children are) afterschool program at the Table Bluff Reservation. DellArte faculty member Zuzka Sabata, Technical Director and Shadow Puppet expert James Hildebrandt, and recent MFA graduates Sarah McKinney and Kaitlen Osburn introduced the magic of shadow puppetry to the youth. The young people made their own shadow puppets and performed in a play adapted from the Wiyot story The Stolen Salmon. The shadow play included images as well as words in Wiyot, serving as a vehicle for the story and language learning. Look for a performance of The Stolen Salmon during Wiyot Days this fall.

During this Mad River Festival, we hope you will join Wiyot Tribal Chairman Ted Hernandez on June 19th for a talk on Wiyot perspectives on culture and history of the North Coast.

Here at DellArte we are installing permanent Wiyot language signage through-out the building. Sign painters Chuck Ellsworth and Lynnie Horrigan are creating signage from Wiyot translations provided by Wiyot Tribe linguist, Lynnika Butler.

  • Students in the one-year Professional Training Program culminate their year with a Rural Residency. Isolated communities are chosen each year to host a group of about 15 DAI students for a 10 day residency. The students camp, offer workshops and create a special show for the community. This year students travelled to Rio Dell. Bridgeville, Petrolia, Forks of Salmon, Orleans, Orick, Whale Gulch (Mendocino County) Spring Valley (Lake County) and Takilma, OR have benefited from this innovative and unique program. Special thanks to the California Arts Council and the McLean Foundation for its support.

With the help of local business sponsors, DellArte has brought free, professional touring holiday shows to the entire Northcoast region for 35 years. Local food banks are the beneficiaries, as audiences bring a canned food item as their admission ticket.

    SERVICE

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW DELLARTE ? While DellArte is an internationally recognized institution that has presented great theatre in Blue Lake and around the world since 1977, weve also been offering arts engagement and community service to our regional communities from Garberville to Forks of Salmon, Petrolia to Cave Junction. Wed love to introduce you to all the

work we do offstage and on, throughout our region!DAI has joined with other local groups to share resources, offer assistance,

and create joint projects to enhance life and the arts on the North coast.

Were one of the only art schools we know that requires community service hours (12 hours for PTP and MFA 1 students, 6 hours for MFA2 and MFA3 students). Serving pancakes at the local Grange breakfast, clowning for children at a fundraiser, planting flora in a marsh restoration project-- students contribute community service in many ways.
