What is LBAT? LBAT (Language for Business And Technology) programs are GA Tech faculty-led summer intensive study-abroad program. In 2016 LBAT Japan offers a 2-month program and a 2 ½-month program and students can earn 9 credit hours (2-month program) and 12 credit hours (2 ½-month program).

Where Is Beppu? Beppu is located in

the northeastern part of Kyushu Island. Beppu is a well-known resort city, famous for its numerous hot springs.

Where Will We Be Staying? You will be staying at a dorm called AP House on the

campus of Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU). APU, which is located on the outskirts of Beppu, is our host university for the 2016 LBAT Japan program. (http://www.apu.ac.jp/home/index.php?sel_lang=japanese&lang=english)

Program Contents - VERY Intensive You will take three Japanese language classes

for a total of 9 credit hours in 2-months or takefour courses for 12 credit hours in 2 ½ months. All applicable to major/minor/certificate.

2-Month Program JAPN 3691: Technical & Scientific Japanese

JAPN 3692: Business Japanese JAPN 3693: Japan Today

2 ½-Month Program the above 3 courses plus JAPN 3813: Conversation Practicum

You have two to four 95-min. classes, Monday through Friday except on field trip days.

Program Contents – Fun! Weekend trip to Nagasaki, weekend home-

stay, field trips to companies and factories, school visit, scavenger hunt in Beppu, etc.

You will have opportunities to do cultural activities such as tea ceremony and calligraphy, and have intercultural communication experience with host university students.

You will be staying in a dormitory on campus and have ample opportunitiesto talk to both Japanese and internationalstudents living in a dorm.

Program Requirements You must have completed at least JAPN2002 or

equivalent with a grade of B or above with good attendance & homework submission record, and be in good academic standing by the end of Spring 2016. (If you are in JAPN 3001 or above, you need to maintain a B average in Japanese classes.) In addition, you need to be adaptable to Japanese culture.

You need to self-study as much content of JAPN 3001 as possible if you will have only completed JAPN 2002 by the end of Spring 2016.

Cost - Continued What’s included in the program fee? What is not included?

The program fee includes accommodation, textbooks, health/repatriation insurance, and ground transportation for program-sponsored mandatory activities.

The program fee does not include air fares (international flights to/from Japan and domestic flights within the U.S. and Japan), ground transportation for non-program activities, summer tuition

and fees, and most meals (est. $1,250-$1,480).

Summer tuition: $327 per credit hour (i.e. $2,943 for 9 credit hours and $3,924 for 12 credit hours) Out-of-state students pay additional $250.

Scholarships Various study-abroad scholarship programs are

available. (See http://oie.gatech.edu/scholarships). Many scholarships have the application deadlines

earlier than the LBAT Japan. If you want to apply for study-abroad scholarship, apply early. Campoamor Scholarship (

): Usually about $400, depending on the # of applicants (Apply at http://modlangs.gatech.edu/special-programs/campoamor-scholarship-application

. Application Deadline: March 30, 2016) LBAT Japan Scholarship Amount: $250 (in the form of the program fee deduction in

exchange of some work helping the program)

Students will be notified by email of the LBAT Japan Scholarship application procedure once s/he is accepted into the program.

Scholarships (continued) OIE Administered Scholarship Application is open and ready to accept applications! The application deadline is January 15, 2016. This will be the last chance for students studying abroad during the summer 2016 term to apply for OIE-administered scholarship funds.

Students can apply online. The scholarships are open to all Georgia Tech students and first semester students are encouraged to apply. Students can also apply for funding well in advance of their proposed study abroad term.

Hope Scholarships applies. You can use HopeScholarship to pay for the summer tuition.

If you are using a scholarship or loan to pay theLBAT Japan program fee (NOT the summer tuition)and the money is not going to be available before the payment deadline(s), you must submit a letterrequesting a deferment of the payment to the program director (Kimiaki Yamaguchi). In this letter,you must specify a new payment date. You are alsorequired to submit a copy of the scholarship award letter or loan approval letter.

Required Orientations If you are accepted into the program, you must

In addition to these the OIE orientations, you are required to attend two orientation meetings for LBAT Japan. Your participation in these meetings is mandatory.
