us pay for the rental of the UD Arena, prayer cards, flowers, and other expenses. Your donation helped us continue the tradition of providing this wonderful tribute to our Mother Mary with prayer and the live Rosary without any formal solicitation from the attendees. Our goal is to continue to increase the attendance each year as we pray to our Holy Mother and her son Jesus during these troubled times. We can accomplish this with your support.” Chapter President Ponder encouraged all councils to support the next, and twelfth annual Family Rosary Rally-Dayton to be held on October 9 th, as this is a very visible Chapter activity.

Greater Dayton Chapter Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service (VAVS) Program. DD8 Bob Burns, who is temporarily the VAVS Program focal point, reported on happenings with the VAVS Program:

(i) On Thursday, December 17th, there was a gift giving tour in the VA Medical Center Complex; there were 13 volunteers from 6 councils, with 71 patients visited; he thanked all, who participated.

(ii) He thanked the five Brother Knights (from four different councils), who helped take down the Christmas decorations at the VA Medical Center Complex on Sunday, January 17th.

(iii) He asked all, on a continuing basis, when you travel, please to collect the unused soaps, shampoos, lotions, etc., found on hotel/ motel bathroom counters, as these items will be distributed to deployed service members, many of whom do not have ready access to obtaining them; he said he would collect donated articles at each Chapter meeting.

(iv) This year councils and assemblies in the Greater Dayton Chapter have donated these items to the Dayton VA Medical Center: 101 pairs of gloves, 27 stocking caps, 16 pairs of socks, and 12 sweatshirts.

(v) On a separate topic, DD8 Burns said the next three dates for the return of the Honor Flight are April 2nd, April 30th, and May 28th; as always, parking at the Park-N-Go on National Road is free.

5. OSC Program Staff Reports.

State Community Director. State Community Director Tom Forsthoefel said that councils should accomplish their reports right away to ensure that they’re not forgotten and to get credit in the OSC general program for their activities; that the councils should use the state web site to submit their reports; and that now is the time for councils to ensure “of-the-year” award nominations are completed and submitted. He added that councils should keep sending in reports even if the council has reached the maximum number of points for a particular category, as each report is still eligible for OSC individual recognition.

State Retention Director West. State Retention Director West Bill Wirtz said that there are issues remaining with the OSC website and it is to be refreshed soon; consequently, councils should go the website after posting reports to ensure that the posts are posted correctly; in general, reports should be

done in a separate word processing document, saved, then copied to the OSC website; that way, if a post fails to show, the council just has to copy and paste the same report over and not to recreate it from scratch. Also with respect to Retention, in the OSC General Program Book, Activity #84 is “Establish a Mentoring Program,” whose purpose is to get a new member familiar with how your council works and with how the overall Knights of Columbus organization works, to get a new member feeling welcomed and comfortable and integrated into meetings, and to get a new member to participate in activities in the Knights of Columbus. He concluded by stating that councils should ensure that they complete the appropriate number of activities in order to get credit and for Retention, specifically, it’s to accomplish three of the six activities listed.

District Deputy Coordinator, Cincinnati. No report.

6. Fourth Degree Hennepin Province Staff Report. Ohio District #2, Assistant Marshal Jack Shaw discussed wear of regalia accessories. Ed Hiehle reiterated upcoming Fourth Degree events, such as presenting the colors at an upcoming Wright State University men’s basketball game and various other events, such as confirmations, etc. He said there are many events on the Hennepin Province website (http://hennepinprovincial.org/). 8. Unfinished Business.

Delegate Enfranchisement. In September, Mike Thomas led a discussion on whether council delegates to the Dayton Chapter should be allowed to vote if the delegates’ councils have not paid yet their dues to the Dayton Chapter. Because the Chapter attendees could not reach a decision, Chapter Vice President Shaw said then that Chapter President Ponder will address this topic at the next Chapter meeting in October. At the October Chapter meeting, Chapter President Ponder said he is not ready yet to address this topic and it will be tabled until November’s Chapter meeting. At the November Chapter meeting following discussion, during which it became apparent that the Chapter Bylaws do not address this issue, Mike Thomas agreed to propose a resolution at the January meeting to amend the Chapter bylaws to address this matter. Because Mike Thomas was unavailable for the January meeting, this unfinished business is postponed until the February meeting.

Funds Request. Chapter President Ponder received a request for funds to support an individual’s missionary trip to El Salvador. DD6 Wiedeman made a motion that the Chapter donate $400 to the individual; the motion was seconded; the motion was discussed, during which a motion was made to table the original motion; the motion to table was seconded; the motion to table the original motion was defeated; the original motion to donate $400 then was voted; the motion carried.
