What is Gymkhana?

Gymkhana is the action packed, precision sport of the equestrian world. A good

Gymkhana horse must have the speed of a race horse, the turning quickness and

agility of a cutting horse and the control and responsiveness of the stock horse.

The word “Gymkhana” is thought to have originated in India, probably meaning

“games on horseback”. The English military, during the Colonial period, used horses

for both transportation and military maneuvers. On Sunday afternoons, the cavalry

would compete in horseback games to sharpen their horsemanship for war. Thus,

Gymkhana had its beginning. Through the years different events have been added,

some of which originated in Europe and others which were developed in this country.

Ring spearing, an event that is still part of Gymkhana in some areas, resembles the

knight in medieval days riding full charge with his lance aimed at his enemy. The

British Bengal Lancer engaged in tent-pegging, using his lance to unearth the tent

pegs of the enemy, bringing down the tent on his adversaries. Pole bending can easily

be seen as good training for a cavalry charge through dense forest. The rescue race

and cowhide race were originated by the Native American Indians as a way to rescue

their comrades in battle. Similarly, the speedball race may have derived from the

Native American Indians counting "coup" in which they would touch their enemies

without harming them. The pony express race, of course, simulates the old time Pony

Express rider who delivered the mail between St. Louis and Sacramento in the Old

West.

In recent years Gymkhana has been steadily gaining in popularity. New events have

been designed for competition between riders which bring into play the abilities of the

rider and the speed and handiness of the horse. A number of events such as barrel

racing, pole bending and the keyhole race, can be found at gymkhanas throughout the

United States.

Shows start at 8am

1. Preregister

a. Preregistering can help get the show started on time.

b. Preregister for EVERY class you think you’ll run - it’s much quicker to scratch a class than to add

one.

c. If you preregister you won’t be one of the first to run, if you don’t preregister you could be.

2. Post-entries

a. Post-entry - any entry received after 8pm the Wednesday prior to the show.

b. Post-entries will be charged a onetime fee of $10 per horse/rider combination.

c. Anyone not preregistered will be required to fill in their name and their horses name on the time

sheets the morning of the show.

SHOW FEES

Office fee: $3 per horse and rider/handler combination.

Members: $7 per class or All Day $60 (pre-entry) or All Day $70 (post-entry)

Non-members: $9 per class or All Day $70 (pre-entry) or All Day $80 (post-entry)

Please pay the day of the show. Payment MUST be left at the booth before you enter.

Gymkhana Divisions

Leadline/In Hand/Walk-Trot 14 & under (will be disqualified if they break gait for more than 3 strides)

Leadline: Rider is 10 years old or younger. Children riding leadline must show reasonable control

of the horse at all times, both in and out of the show ring. Handlers may not touch the horse and

must stay at or behind the shoulder of the horse.

In Hand: Handlers may not touch the horse and must stay at or behind the shoulder of the horse.

Walk-Trot: Riders may have an attendant in the ring, but the attendant must stay at or behind the

shoulder of the horse and may not touch the horse.

In Hand/Walk-Trot 15 & over (will be disqualified if they break gait for more than 3 strides)

In Hand: Handlers may not touch the horse and must stay at or behind the shoulder of the horse.

Walk-Trot: Riders may have an attendant in the ring, but the attendant must stay at or behind the

shoulder of the horse, may not touch the horse.

14 & Under

Rider is 14 years old or younger as of January 1st 2016

15-19

Rider is at least 15 years old, but not older than 19 as of January 1st 2016

Adult

Rider is at least 19 years old as of January 1st 2016

Green Horse

A green horse is a horse that is new to being ridden or Gymkhana (less than 2 years)

Year End Points

1. Year end points will be determined using the following system regardless of the number of entries in the

class.

1st place = 6 points 2nd place = 5 points 3rd place = 4 points

4th place = 3 points 5th place = 2 points 6th place = 1 point

2. Only members are eligible for year end points. A horse/rider or horse handler team must enter and

compete in at least three of the series’ four shows to qualify for points in any particular class.

3. Year end points accumulate over all four shows, so it’s in the best interest of the horse/rider or

horse/handler to come to all four shows and compete in the same classes.

4. Points earned in Pairs classes to not count toward Sponsor Awards.

RULES, POLICIES and MORE RULES

NBarH Show Rules

1. All participants, including riders, handlers, and spectators, are responsible for a thorough knowledge of

and compliance with these rules and policies, as well as those stated elsewhere in the show book and in

the constitution of the by-laws of the club.

2. An adult must accompany small children at all times and is responsible for not just the child’s safety, but

also that of the horses and handlers that a child may frighten or disturb.

3. All dogs must be tied and the leash must attach to a handler, in a car with the window down, at all times

for the safety of the dog, horses, handlers, and the general public.

4. No rider/handler shall do more than a brisk walk on the grounds except in the warm-up area. The show

ring will not be used for warming up. The warm-up area is way out back, past the last horse trailer.

5. Riders/handlers aged 16 and older may handle a stallion in individual classes in a closed ring. The

stallion must be under the exclusive control of an adult 18 years or older at all times outside the ring and

before and after the gate is closed. Stallions MUST wear a visible yellow ribbon in their tail while

anywhere on the show grounds. Weanlings are not considered stallions; only intact horses one year or

older (as of January 1st) are considered stallions.

6. Any horse known to kick MUST wear a red ribbon in their tail at all times while on show grounds. These

ribbons are NOT for decoration – please use caution when approaching a horse with a red ribbon.

Registration Policies

1. A negative Coggins report is required at registration for all horses – no horse should be unloaded on Club

grounds before a negative Coggins report has been checked by show management. Reports for horses

stabled in New Hampshire are good for one year; federal law dictates that all horses crossing a state line

must have a negative Coggins report within 6 months.

Please present a clear copy of your Coggins report for every horse at the time of your first registration. (It

would be great if you could bring in a copy to keep on file, there is no copier available at the show) No

horse will be allowed to show and will be asked to leave if the paperwork is not available or if it does not

match the horse. A rabies vaccination is not required but highly recommended.

2. Entry forms must have the COMPLETE name and address of the rider/handler.

3. Each entry is based on one rider/horse combination. If members are lucky enough to have two horses or a

few riders showing, each horse and rider/handler must fill out SEPARATE entry forms and pay separate

office fees. Please state on the forms which order you want them to run.

4. Once a class has started no entries will be allowed for that class (exception – Keyhole)

5. Please be considerate of those working in the secretary’s booth; it isn’t always the same person and they

don’t always know you or your horse. Be consistent with your horse’s name (if your horse is named Giant

Gentle Ben, do not enter him in one show as Giant, one as Ben and another as Gentle Ben). In order to

ensure that you receive all the appropriate year end points, you must be consistent. It is fine to use a

shortened name or nickname/barn name as long as you use it consistently.

6. Age of rider is that as of January 1st of the show year, exhibitors MUST enter age division accordingly;

extenuating circumstances may be discussed with show management.

7. Any rider or handler who wishes to be considered for a breed, color, barn, or age specific award must put

the required information on their entry forms; the VP’s cannot guess and will not research this information.

8. A horse may be entered only once in each class regardless of rider. However, a horse may enter two

classes with the same pattern in different age divisions with different riders, as long as the horse is not

distressed by exhaustion. For example: if Junior rides Tonto in Barrels Jr. Dad can ride Tonto in Barrels

Sr. However, if Junior rides Tonto in Barrels Jr. Sissy may not ride Tonto in Barrels Jr.

9. A horse and rider/handler may enter only one division per show, cross entry is not allowed.

10. Classes, including add-on, must be paid for before the class begins. Pre-entries do not need to be paid at

the time of registration, but do need to be settled before the first entered class begins. An open check may

be left at the secretary’s booth and settled at the end of the day.

11. In the event a check is returned for insufficient funds, NBarH will charge a $20 fee and the privilege of

paying by check may be revoked and points accrued may be rescinded.

12. Refunds will only be authorized should horse or rider be ill or physically unfit to compete.

13. Pre-entries must be received by 8pm the Wednesday before the scheduled show. Please feel free to enter

for all four shows at the beginning of the year – you do not need to pay at the time of preregistration and

there is no penalty for scratching a class. Phone entries will not be accepted. Any entries received after

this deadline or on the day of the show will be subject to post-entry fees. Additions will be subject to the

post-entry fee and additions must be paid for before the class begins.

14. All additions must be made at least 2 classes in advance – signup sheets will be outside the secretary’s

booth for you to fill out). Any rider/handler in a class who is not registered may be asked to exit the ring

and not be judged in that class. Please plan accordingly to ensure you have time to come to the booth and

make the addition appropriately. Yelling your change to the secretary’s booth is not accepted.

15. You may join and pay for membership the day of the show and receive membership rates for that show

and any future 2016 shows.

16. New members are eligible for benefits the day they become members, including reduced class fees and

accumulated year-end points. However, membership is not retroactive and all points earned prior to

becoming a member will not count towards year-end awards or eligibility.

Gymkhana Rules

1. Western tack is encouraged, but any safe, non-abusive tack that allows a rider to adequately control the

horse at the speed of travel is allowed. If show management deems your tack unsafe for your speed, you

will be required to change tack in order to continue. Rider’s footgear must have at least a 1 inch heel; no

work boots or sneakers of any type are allowed. We encourage ASTM-SEI helmets for everyone and they

are REQUIRED for all riders less than 18 years of age whenever mounted.

2. At the Gymkhana shows formal show attire is not required, but your photos will definitely be nicer.

3. NBarH encourages the humane treatment of all equines and assumes that you will not use any severe

equipment. Show management and judges reserve the right to determine if equipment is severe and what

penalty will be imposed should it be found so.

4. Hitting a horse in front of the girth is automatic disqualification and the rider will be asked to leave the

grounds. This rule applies to all seats.

5. Gymkhana management reserves the right to disallow any competitor if he/she does not seem to have

control of his/her horse, for the safety of all present.

6. Children riding leadline must show reasonable control of the horse at all times, both in and out of the

show ring. Leaders may not touch the horse and may not speak except in an emergency.

7. If any competitor has special needs, please see show management; will do our very best to accommodate

you.

8. Gymkhana rider/handlers must be at the gate and ready to enter the ring when called; we announce three

people in advance, so you should always have plenty of time to get to the gate. There will be a 2 minute

gate call. If you are not at the gate within 2 minutes of when it’s your turn to run, you will not be allowed

to enter that class.

9. Broken horse equipment: horse equipment must be repaired or replaced by the end of the class in order to

run the class, a rerun will be allowed if the equipment breaks during the initial run. Multiple equipment

“failures” will be scrutinized.

10. Each class will be run and pointed as long as there is at least one entrant.

11. In the event of a tie, the horse/riders involved in the tie will rerun the course.

12. It is the responsibility of the rider to understand the pattern of each class.

13. Patterns will be set for the show year and will not be changed (exception – Challenge classes)

14. Disqualifications for every class (some classes will have special rules)

a. Unnecessary roughness, abuse of horse, unsound horse, unsafe horse. Any show of blood on the

horse will be an automatic disqualification.

b. Lack of required equipment, use of prohibited equipment, use of performance altering drugs on

horse or rider, any throwing of equipment during an event will result in disqualification.

c. Failure to cross start line within one minute of entering arena.

d. Failure to follow pattern

e. Fall of horse and/or rider

f. Reversal of direction

g. Loss of forward motion: The only penalty associated with loss of forward motion will be the

increased time covering the Gymkhana course. Contestants will not be penalized for loss of

forward motion.

15. The show rules, as written, will remain in effect for the entire show season. Any changes will take effect

the following year’s show season.

16. All shows are held rain or shine. In the case of heavy rain (causing unsafe footing) and/or lightening, the

show may be stopped temporarily or for the remainder of the show. In the case of a show being cancelled

prior to start time be sure to indicate how you want to be contacted on your entry form (phone call, text,

email, other). Makeup show will be run as soon as there is an opening in the schedule.

Chute Rules

1. No one is allowed in the chute on foot unless showing in hand or leadline.

2. You must enter the arena through the chute at the end gate, but you do not have to start or end your run in

the chute.

3. The chute shall be considered part of the arena.

4. Horses will enter from the right side (the side the secretary’s booth is on) and exit from the left. The

openings will be clearly marked.

5. Do not obstruct, hinder or block the entrance & exit openings of the chute.

6. Horses MUST be under control when exiting the chute.

7. Only one horse in the chute at a time.

8. The side gate will only be used in emergencies.

hours to the club during the year. The second option is to pay a higher member fee and does not have any time

the fall fun show. If you do not complete your hours, you will have the choice to either forfeit all of your points

and your year-end awards OR pay the fee difference in full (this will not be pro-rated based on partial

completion of hours)

2016 NBARH GYMKHANA SERIES CLASS DESCRIPIONS

1. Keyhole (In and Out ... don't step over the line) ~ Open

The Pattern

Cross the start/finish line, run into the circle of the keyhole thru the wings, turn 180* in either

direction, then return across the start/finish line. All four of the horse's feet must enter the

circle thru the wings.

Run must start/finish between the start poles and can be run in either direction.

Chute may be used for this course (read rules for using the chute).

Disqualifications:

The rider will be disqualified if the horse's hoof touches the ground on or outside of any portion

of the Keyhole (circle or wings), running off course or separation of rider and horse/pony during

the timing period will disqualify contestant.

2. Flag Race (Stab n’ Grab) ~ Open

The Pattern

Cross the start/finish line, holding flag in hand. Race to barrel; stick the flag into the bucket,

grab the other flag while going around barrel and race back across the start/finish line.



Disqualifications:

The rider will be disqualified for dropping the flag. Flag not staying in the “stuck position” in the

material inside the container on the barrel, using the flag for a bat or whip, running off course

or separation of rider and horse/pony during the timing period will disqualify contestant.

3. Bleeding Heart

The Pattern

Cross the start/finish line, racing to one of the far barrels (left or right), turn the barrel coming

around the 2nd barrel in the center, race back up to and around the 3rd barrel, then race back

across start/finish line.



Disqualifications:

Knock down of barrel, broken pattern, running off course or separation of rider and horse/pony

during the timing period will disqualify contestant.

4. Dash (One Barrel ... down, around, and back)

The Pattern

Cross the start/finish line to the barrel, turn barrel in either direction; return across start/finish

line.



Disqualifications:

Knocking barrel over, breaking pattern or separation of rider and horse/pony during the timing

period will disqualify contestant.

5. Barrels (Cloverleaf)

The Pattern

Cross the start/finish line, go to barrel #1 first, making a right turn and then to barrels #2

and #3, making left turns OR to barrel #2 first, making a left turn and then to barrels #1 and

#3, making right turns; then return through the start/finish line.



Disqualifications:



6. Double Barrels (Shot Gun Barrels) ~ Pairs

The Pattern

These are two cloverleaf barrel patterns run at the same time, sharing the middle barrel.

Each horse must run either a right run or a left run. The first horse to cross the starting line will

start the time and the last horse to cross the line at the end of the run will stop the time.

Must be run thru between the start/finish poles, can be run in either direction.

Chute CANNOT be used for this course.

Disqualifications:



7. Speed Barrels (Three barrels in a line ... weave down, weave back)

The Pattern

Cross the start/finish line, pass the first barrel on either side, pass the succeeding barrels on

alternate sides, turn around last barrel, pass remaining barrels on alternate sides, and return

across the start/finish line.



Disqualifications:



8. 1 Jump Scurry

The Pattern

Cross the start/finish line; race over the jump, turn around the barrel, then race back over the

jump and across start/finish line.



Disqualifications:

Knock down of barrel, missing jump, broken pattern, running off course or separation of rider

and horse/pony during the timing period will disqualify contestant.

9. Pole Bending (Run to the end, weave back and weave up, run home.)

The Pattern

Cross the start/finish line, go along either side of the poles to the last pole, turn around last

pole, pass successive poles on alternate sides, turn around first pole, continue to pass

successive poles on alternate sides, turn around last pole and go along the side of the poles to

the timing line.



Disqualifications:


during the timing period will disqualify contestant. A broken pattern occurs if the rider does not

complete the pattern correctly, or if the rider commits any cross-over which is not the standard

6 cross over pattern. A broken pattern also occurs if the rider crosses through the row of poles

before correcting the pattern since this would cause and extra crossover in the pattern.

10. Big T (Two Barrels, Three Poles)

The Pattern

Cross the start/finish line, pass the first pole on either the left or the right; pass the next two

poles on alternate sides. If the 3rd pole is passed on the right side, proceed to the barrel on

your left, making a left turn and then a left turn around the other barrel. Then weave back

through the three poles on opposite sides to go back across the start/finish line. Note: If the

first pole is passed on the right side, the two barrels will both be left turns. If the first pole is

passed on the left side, the two barrels will both be right turns.


Chute may be used for this course (read rules for using the chute)

Disqualifications:

Knock down of barrel or pole, broken pattern, running off course or separation of rider and

horse/pony during the timing period will disqualify contestant.

11. Relay Race ~ Pairs (Around the arena)

The Pattern:

Both riders and horses start in the box, rider 1 carries the baton and races around the arena

between the fence and poles back to the start box. Rider 1 hands the baton to rider 2 while

both sets of horse and riders are in the box. Rider 2 then races around the arena between the

fence and poles back to the box.

Rider 1 does not need to stay in the box when rider 2 returns but must stay between the

barrels.

Note: If the baton is dropped in the box. Rider 1 may dismount, pickup baton, remount horse

then hand off baton to rider 2. Both horses must be mounted and be in the box for the handoff.

Start poles are not used to start the race cannot be run in either direction, must be run as

shown.

Disqualifications:

Knock down of barrel or pole, dropping of baton outside the box, broken pattern, running off

course or separation of rider and horse/pony during the timing period will disqualify contestant.
