In 2016 the Foundation will continue to use golf to reach out to autism organizations across North America through the hosting of Ernie Els #GameON Autism™ Golf Clinics alongside each of the regional Golf Challenge events. With support from PGA Reach, The First Tee, US Kids Golf, The Honda Classic and Adams Golf, this clinic series looks to build life skills, self-esteem and confidence in a fun, welcoming, and supportive environment. This year over 400 participants will become exposed to golf utilizing specific best practice teaching concepts for individuals with autism which enhances their ability to learn.

The Golf Challenge creates a great way for the local community to come together in each city. Furthermore, a portion of the funds raised on the day of each regional Golf Challenge event is left behind in that city to fund sports and wellness programs for the autism community long after the Golf Challenge has left town.

#GameON Autism Golf Program will be expanded this year to include pilot programs throughout North America and internationally. Each pilot site will participate in one day training where golf instructors will learn about the characteristics of autism and the best practices for teaching participants with autism and other developmental disabilities. These programs provide opportunities for social interaction and contribute to a healthy and active lifestyle.

THE EVENT DETAILS

The Els for Autism Foundation was established in 2009 by PGA TOUR golfer Ernie Els and his wife Liezl shortly after their son Ben was diagnosed with autism.

Els for Autism has foundation offices in the U.S., Canada, South Africa and the UK. The Foundation’s overarching mission is to help people on the autism spectrum fulfill their potential to lead positive, productive, and rewarding lives.

In the U.S., to help fulfill its mission Els for Autism is building a state-of-the-art Center of Excellence in Jupiter, FL, with a local, national and global reach and is in the middle of a capital campaign to finance the development.

THE FUNDRAISING COMPETITION

HONORARY CAPTAINSEach Golf Challenge team is asked to play and fundraise on behalf of an Honorary Captain, a child or young adult on the autism spectrum, who inspires them to make a difference. The three highest fundraising teams from across the series will be presented with awards at the Grand Finale and receive an experience for their Honorary Captain and their family.

After registration, each team is provided with online tools to create a personalized Team Fundraising Page to help secure online donations. Ernie Els will award ‘The Els Cup’ to the highest fundraising team from the series at the Grand Finale in Las Vegas.

THE GRAND FINALE

Finalists will enjoy a two-day extravaganza of golf and entertainment in Las Vegas hosted by Liezl and Ernie Els and the Golf Challenge’s family of sponsors. Guests will enjoy a welcome party, play tournament golf and attend a fabulous gala celebration and awards ceremony. Guests will also have the opportunity to attend an autism seminar.

Els for Autism Canada was established as a Foundation in 2013 by professional golfer and World of Golf Hall of Famer, Ernie Els and his wife Liezl. Ernie and Liezl have been active in organizations providing assistance to people on the autism spectrum since 2008, shortly after their son Ben was diagnosed.

All funds raised from Golf Challenge events hosted in Canada stay in Canada and in the territory or province in which the funds were raised, with proceeds from the events donated to a variety of non-profit organizations focused on helping children and families affected by Autism.

Funds raised through the U.S. Golf Challenge events go towards the building of a physical and virtual Center of Excellence that will reach out and make a difference to individuals on the spectrum and their families across the US and internationally.

Groundbreaking for the state-of-the-art Center began in March 2014. Once complete the facility will include an educational program for 300 students ages 3-21and bring together the critical components of early intervention, education, applied research, transition to adulthood, medical and professional services, and adult services all on one campus. In addition, the Center has the technology, space and design components needed to connect the global autism community and facilitate the sharing of best practices in education and therapy with individuals on the spectrum, their families and the professionals that work with them, across the U.S. and internationally.

Autism is a challenge for those affected by it, their families and the communities in which they live. Together we can increase awareness, provide resources and work towards providing environments in which people with autism spectrum disorders can thrive.
