2016 Generations in Jazz Senior Band,

Middle Years Soccer

The SAAS association decided to combine year 8 and 9 soccer into a middle years’ competition that has 5 divisions for 2016 and so far it is providing a number of issues that I would like to clarify. The 9A team has been entered into Division 1 and the 9B’s have been entered into Division 3 and this has led to some very close encounters and healthy competition. In order to prepare the year 8’s for future contests together, the decision was made to keep the best players in year 8 as the 8A’s and to play them in Division 2. Unfortunately, this has created two very one sided contests with the 8A’s playing other schools middle B teams and resulted in 32 goals in two games. I am hopeful that we will encounter some stronger opposition as the season progresses and have requested a move into Division 1. The 8B team and the combined 8/9B teams are entered into division 4 which may create confusion when reading the maps from opposing schools, but it should also avoid previous situations where Rostrevor B teams had to play opposing school’s A sides.

Game Summary:

Our Round 2 clash at home found us playing a very well drilled St Peters side.

The contest was fast & physical from the opening bounce with both teams going at the ball with high intensity & when winning it, trying to move the ball quickly. Again our poor finishing in front of goal in the first quarter cost us dearly and allowed the opposition to get out to a small early break. The 2nd quarter was a very even contest with us finally finishing our work off in front of goals, kicking 5 goals straight to close the gap and provide some momentum going into the break.

After half time we seemed to have left our minds, enthusiasm & confidence in the change rooms. The opposition opened the 3rd quarter strongly and exposed us with fast running handball and our lack of defensive hard running contributed to a flurry of St Peter’s goals. With a few adjustments we were able to nullify the opposition’s run late in the quarter but the damage had been done and the opposition had opened up an extensive lead.

The last quarter was a far better effort from us. We were able to get our hands back on the footy a bit more and defensively we were much tighter. Despite an improved last quarter effort St Peters ran out eventual winners by 48 points.

Finding better players for the game was very difficult as everyone had moments but all dropped out of the game at different times. Defensively Mitchell Gum and Hugh Walker held up well under pressure. Through the midfield Brad McCarthy worked tirelessly in tight, Mihail Lochowiak won plenty of ball & Toby Pink had strong moments in ruck. Up Forward Darcy Fogarty took some strong marks and Adam Nichaloff was dangerous with his pace causing problems for the opposition.

Congratulations to year 10 Luke Valente on debuting in the 1st XVIII.

In the first game of the season, with Premiership points up for grabs, Rostrevor played at home against Trinity under lights on the Main oval. An early goal gave Trinity College the lead despite Rostrevor dominating possession throughout the first half. After the high emotion of the spirit Assembly and formation of the RCE (Rostrevor Casual Element) the Red and Black did not appear to suffer any nerves as they created many chances in the first half - yet still ended up being 1-0 down. Knowing a victory would set the season up, the visitors took the lead when a clearance ended up at the winger’s feet, who fired in a low shot. The debutant ‘keeper, Denis Palushaj, parried well but the defence had frozen and the Trinity centre forward tapped home against the play. Dave Signore had a penalty saved after great work by Angelo Maio on the right, Matt Mezzini went inches wide with a header from a Signore corner and several free kicks went in to the crowd as Trinity offered no real threat of their own.

The Rossi men at least woke up after the break and should have made it 1-1 when Mezzini centered to an unmarked Ulaj but to no avail. The large crowd gathered behind the away goal ‘Ooh-ed’ and ‘Aaah-ed’ as the Red and Black camped out in the Trinity half. Patrick Caraccia burst into the area to be brought down and Julian Esposito stepped up to smash the ball at the Trinity ‘keeper, who quite rightly, got out of the way making it 1-1. The boys were up and about now, with attack after attack, seemingly in waves, breaking on the shores of the Trinity penalty area. With 5 minutes left on the clock and Trinity defending resolutely, Julian Esposito picked out the bottom right-hand corner after running across the box. A nervy last 5 minutes of extra time meant some interesting tactics from Trinity, looking for the long ball and spaces out wide. The whistle brought a near pitch invasion by the home support, flags waving and drums beating.

Nathan Monda, the skipper this year said, “A few unexpected losses last year robbed us of confidence and despite it looking shaky at the break, we knew we just needed to regroup at half-time. It could have been very easy to go long at 1-0 down and I think we would have been beaten. Credit to the lads: they were brave and played their stuff and, in the end, got their reward.”

On the first weekend back at school, 56 of our most talented musicians attended the Generations in Jazz National Band Competition. It is the biggest school band and vocal competition in Australia. 4,000 students from every state in Australia travelled to Mt Gambier for the weekend to participate in 5 band divisions and 3 vocal divisions. Though Mt Gambier might seem an unusual choice of venue, it is central to Melbourne and Adelaide, and one of the few places able to accommodate the influx of about 10,000 people for the weekend.

The Senior Band, the Senior Vocal (pictured top right), the Senior Jazz Band (pictured bottom right) and the Intermediate Band performed fantastically, and were recognised as being amongst the finest school ensembles in South Australia.

It was a great weekend, and to be able to be recognised at such a high national level is a credit to the hard work and dedication of the lads, and their ensemble directors.

On Saturday Night, we were privileged to be able to watch one of America’s finest College Big Bands called the “One O’Clock Lab Band” strut their stuff to the adulation of 4,000 screaming musicians. Kate Ceberano joined in with some smooth jazzy vocal charts, and world famous trombone and vocalist Wycliffe Gordon captured the crowd with his husky, soulful vocals and dazzling trombone playing. A capacity crowd cheered, stomped their feet whistled, yelled and screamed for more, as each musician performed some amazing pieces. Even after the huge day that everyone had had, the crowd went nuts…and finished with the crowd on their feet begging for more.

It was a fantastic weekend of music, and camaraderie. Getting to meet over 4000 other students, share meals with, play music with, and compete against was amazing. Everyone had a common link, and everyone had worked hard to earn their place to be there.

Many thanks go to Mrs Tiggemann and Mr Osman for their dedication and hard work in preparing their ensemble for the competition, and a special congratulation to year 11 student Alexander Gentilcore for his outstanding contribution in both preparation and performance. Alexander was awarded the ‘Man of Gambos’
