Special Congregational Meeting Minutes—November 13, 2016

The meeting was called to order by Mark Stroman, President of St. John’s Church Council. Pastor opened the meeting with prayer. The President announced that a quorum was present and the meeting proceeded. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the renovation project of the restrooms and kitchen in the fellowship hall. A handout was given to members at the meeting that detailed the scope of the work to be done. Previously drawings of the proposed project had been placed in the church and fellowship hall for members to review. Tim Westphal is to act as liaison with the construction company once selected by the church council. Christy Paulsgrove will chair the committee that will be selecting colors, materials, appliances, etc. for the project. If interested in serving on this committee please let her know.

Joyce Albrecht moved that we relocate and renovate the main hallway public restrooms to comply with the current ADA requirements, expand the existing kitchen to create separate preparation and serving areas, including upgrades to the appliances, cabinetry, and flooring with a limit of $120,000.00 and a 10 % contingency. Wanda Cornish seconded this motion. Voting was done by secret ballot. The motion passed 47-3.

Stanley Oehlke moved and Garrett Oehlke seconded that the meeting by adjourned. Motion carried. Meeting was then adjourned.

November 6 Children’s Sunday School Class

It was wonderful seeing the children in Sunday School. The following were in attendance: Emree and Trey Hoffman,

Cooper and Cutter Mares, Emberlyn Elrod and Daylon Meyer. We continued to practice our Christmas songs during

our opening for our church performance on December 11. They continue to learn The Lords Prayer. The offering collected was

$15. The younger class learned about twin boys, Esau and Jacob who were very different. God loves all of us, even if we are different! The older class learned about Faith. The Bible tells us that Faith is given to us by God, but it is something we

have to practice for it to feel natural.

St. John’s Christmas Project

This Christmas Season St. John’s Church will be participating in the Silver Santa Program that is being

offered for families in Goliad County. We are asking members to donate new toys, books, or clothing to be giv-en to this program. We will have a collection box in the back of

the Church. All unwrapped items must be brought to the church by Wednesday December 7. If you would like to vol-unteer to help wrap these gifts; this will be done at the Method-

ist Church starting at 9 am on Dec 8 and Dec 9. Distribution will be Dec 10. If you don’t want to shop you may donate $$. Please see Christy Paulsgrove if you have questions or wish to

donate money. Our church has always been so generous to help others at this special time of the year.

On Sunday, December 11, St. John's Sunday School children will be singing some Christmas songs for you at the beginning of the

church service. Hope you enjoy their presentation and it puts you in the mood for Christmas as we celebrate the birth of Jesus!

13 Such are the paths of all who forget God; the hope of the godless shall perish.14 His confidence is severed, and his trust is a spider's web. (Job 8:13-14 ESV)

I am not a fan of crab spiders. This must be their time of year because you can find them literally hanging around everywhere; I know because I find them way too often. The reason that they are called crab spiders is they look a lot like small crabs; I know because when I find them I have walked into their web and we are usually face to face. From my perspective they are not very good looking. And even though they are small, when they are an inch or two from your nose, you tend to notice things like their looks. I won’t rule out that they may feel the same way about me. I don’t enjoy walking into one of their webs any more so than I imagine they don’t really enjoy me walking into it. Once entangled my first thought is to get it off. Then again, my second and third thoughts are the same. As embarrassing as it is, I might appear to the casual observer to be throwing some kind of fit or tantrum for a moment as I discard the web. I don’t know how the spiders figure out where I am going to walk, but they do. And I am somewhat concerned that they plan it that way. Having such an organized spider colony is all the more disconcerting. What it all adds up to is that I am not a fan of theirs.

That is until the other day. One of those little spiders caught a fair sized grasshopper. You might think that due to my disdain for the crab spiders I would root for the grasshopper, but you would be mistaken. The grasshoppers behave badly and feel they have Carta Blanc to munch on our plants, so I cheered the crab spider. It made me reconsider my position on the spider. Yes, I don’t like walking into their webs. Yes, I don’t enjoy having them a few inches from my nose. But maybe they provide a benefit too.

Community Christmas Carol Festival

Sunday, December 18, 2016

choirs sing, enjoy special music performances, sing along

to your favorite Christmas carols, and join us for

refreshments afterwards.

When Jesus walked the earth I know from reading the Bible that he walked into many a web. These though were of human making. Many plotted against him for a variety of reasons, but he did not plot against them. He often found himself nose to nose with some ugly people – ugly in the way they acted. Their goal was to ensnare Jesus in their web of deceit and rid the world of his presence. Considering the power and authority that he had, isn’t it interesting that he didn’t brush them off, instead he reached out to them to save them. They were not a nuisance in his mind, they just needed to be put on the right path to walk with God. He saw them as needed and necessary and wanted. He knew that if they would just follow God, they would also provide a benefit to the world.

This is the way we need to view one another. There are people that we agree with and those we don’t, but Jesus was born and died to save us all. Maybe that translates into having some respect for one another. Throwing tantrums if we don’t get our way merely entangles us in a web of deceit – deceived that we are always right. Sometimes things work out how we want them to and sometimes they don’t, but we still need one another. Even though we may not see it at first, we each have some benefit to add.

Just remember that we are each loved by God, and he gave us the baby in the manger to prove it.

St. John’s Lutheran Church Council Meeting November 8, 2016

The regular meeting of the Church Council was held on Tuesday November 8, 2016 at 6:00pm. Pastor and all council members were present for the meeting. Pastor opened the meeting with a prayer.

The minutes from the previous meeting were reviewed and approved. Bil moved and Keith seconded that the minutes be accepted. Motion carried. The Treasurer’s report was reviewed and discussed. Bil moved and Marshall seconded that the report be approved. Motion carried.

Committee Reports

Altar and Communion:

No new report

Cemetery:

No new report

Women of St. John’s:

Thankoffering service will be held Sunday Nov 13. Women will help during the service and a special offering will be placed in the back .

Men’s Breakfast:

There were 20 in attendance.

Long Range Planning Committee:

No new report

Evangelism:

Movie night will be held on Nov 19 at 6pm. Snacks will be provided.

Old Business:

Discussion and reminder about the Special Congregational meeting on Nov 13 following the Church service was held. Renovation plans will be discussed at this meeting with a vote of approval /disapproval for the project. The Council has already voted their approval but now will need the congregation’s approval to proceed.

Pastor stated that the final money made at the BBQ on Mother’s Day was $2,144 and will be given to our Mission Church as previously approved.

New Business:

Christy Paulsgrove, who is in charge of the Christmas Poject, recommended to council that this year our church participate in the Silver Santa program that is being sponsored in our community. Members are asked to donate new toys or new books to be given to families in need. A box will be placed in the back of the church for members to bring items. If you do not want to shop you may donate $$$. There will also be a sign up sheet for any who want to volunteer to help wrap the gifts. Council expressed approval of this project.

Marshall stated that Christmas will be December 25 this year.

Marshall also moved to adjourn the meeting. Bil seconded it.

Motion carried and meeting was adjourned with the Lord’s Prayer.
