Graduation Requirement vs. Post Sec. Admission Requirement There are classes that the BC Ministry of Education requires you to have in order to graduate from a BC high school – these are the graduation requirements ie. Any Math 11 There are certain courses that a post secondary school may require you to have with a particular % (but that may NOT be required to meet high school graduation requirements) in order to be admitted to a specific program - these are Post Sec. admission requirements (ie.Math 12 if you want to enter Science programs –

Specific Courses Required for the Grade 10 Year (6 classes)

Humanities 10 Option (Eng. & SS)

• Course is covered over two consecutive blocks; earn credit for both Social Studies 10 and English 10

• Covers issues that thematically connect literature, history and current events.

• Although Humanities 10 is available to all grade 10 students, this course is designed to appeal to students who are passionate about the humanities and interested in pursuing collaborative critical inquiry.

• Successful Humanities 10 students should be motivated, self-regulated and responsible when it comes to their learning.

Communications 10

This course will involve instruction in basic reading and writing skills and is designed for those students with weaker skills in English 9 or students who took Cornerstones strong focus on strategies for planning, organizing and communicating ideas in both writing and oral work. Practical communication skills are emphasized and oral presentations will occur throughout the year. Communications 10 can lead to Communications 11 or English 11. The final exam written by all students is issued by the provincial government and is worth 20% of the final mark.

ENGLISH 10: TRANSITIONS ELL students at an Upper Level 2 or Level 3 in the English Language skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. the aim of this course is to not only improve the student’s language abilities but also to provide exposure to various genres (novel, short story, poetry, essay, etc). the goal of this course is to equip students who perform well for English 11 or Communications 11

NOTE: completion of the course does not guarantee that the student will be placed in a regular English course the following year. Some student may move to En. 10 or Com. 10 At the teacher’s discretion, students may write the English 10 Provincial Exam in June. (Worth 20% of the final mark) Recommendation: Must get recommendation from International Coordinator, School Administrator or School Counsellor. Must be take with Composition 10

English 10 Composition

This course does not meet the graduation requirement of English 10 and must be taken in ALONG WITH with English 10: Transitions This course is designed to help students developing their proficiency with the English skills required on the En. 10 Provincial exams Reading and writing are the primary focuses of this course. Must be taken with TRANSITIONS 10 sign up for BOTH

Math: Pre Calc 10 Option if you are at a comfortable C-C+ or above in Math 9 this is the most appropriate option ; This math course leads to Pre-Calculus 11 and 12 which are required prerequisites for many buisness, science /math based post secondary courses and many other post secondary programs

Apprenticeship and Workplace Math 10

This course meets GRADUATION requirements but does not meet many academic post secondary entry prerequisites

This course DOES meet the prerequisites for many work/career and apprenticeship type programs at post secondary (i.e. Early Childhood Education, Masonry, and so on)

Students who score highly in this course may move to FOUNDATIONS MATH 11 (and 12) which is an academic math and DOES meet post secondary entry requirements in non-science and math academic programs – consultation strongly suggested

Sample ‘typical’ scenarios:Student A: C+ in math 8, C in math 9, but B’s in other academic areas and wanting to go on to an academic post secondary program: MATH 10 Pre-Calc with tutor recommended to support weak skills in this one area

Student B: C’s in Math 6, 7, C in Math 8, C- in Math 9 – C’s in other academic areas – Apprenticeship and Workplace Math recommended

Student C: B’s in Math 6, 7, C+ in Math 8, C+ average in other academic areas; poor work and study habits led to C- in math 9 – MATH 10 Pre-Calc but with tutor support to fill in learning gaps; re-evaluate at the end of gr 10

Planning 10 – required course

Gr. 9 Summer Fully Online– not in gr. 10 course selection; do it spring/Summer; select students only In-Class gr. 10 Yr. – part online/part regular instruction; block in the timetable; best suited for students who need regular monitoring/firm deadlines etc. Fully On-line Sept-June gr. 10 – Sept. to June – independent; select students – not suited to students that do not have a history of strong work/study habits

PLANNING 10 ONLINE SEAQUAM COHORT Sept- June gr. 10 year

PE 10 Leadership Participation in fitness activities as well as team and individual

sports stresses active health, fitness, skill, fair play, and knowledge of the game.

Activities such as hockey, ultimate, soccer, rugby, handball, golf, tennis, and peer teaching.

emphasis on active health, fitness and leadership Students will also take a leadership role within the school planning,

organizing, and running intramurals, tournaments, and sporting events Students should be athletic, self-motivated with a desire to take on a

leadership role within the school. Criteria for selection: Students will be required to complete an

application and will be selected by the Physical Education Department.

PE: Women's Volleyballprogram replaces the regular required (P.E.) course/credit and offers 100 plus hours of instruction combining on-court and physical training. COURSE FEE: $250 Volleyball curriculum as set out by Seaquam Volleyball Coaches and in compliance with the BC Ministry of Education's Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Physical Education. Opportunity given to complete their Level I Referees Certification. Earn dual credits towards high school graduation and graduation from Kwantlen Polytechnic University ; students will design, plan and build a learning farm at a small school set on 8 acres.

Topics include food systems and resource management with a focus on innovative sustainability and agricultural sciences. Other topics include Entrepreneurship, Emergent Technologies, Foundations of Inquiry and Independent / Group Inquiries. Sustainability Sciences (Agricultural / Environmental Studies).

Students will have a unique skill set applicable to varied career paths as well as the competencies in demand from today’s employers: leadership, collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, and communication. The innovation aims to make learning relevant and connected to students’ lived experiences.

GRADE 10 – would need to speak to the program director at the school district to see who this could pair with your grade 10 requirements.

The importance of ALTERNATES . . .

Please note that you will be asked to select TWO alternates. Choose WISELY as you may be required to stay in an alternate.

What if I get an alternate in my timetable? Can I come in for a course change in Sept. ?

No. It isn’t an ‘error’. It means there was no room in your first choice(s). Therefore, the alternate is your selection. Take the time now to really think about your choices!

A Note about Provincial Exams

Required for Graduation

Written only in JUNE at Seaquam (Jan./June at semester schools)

You MUST write all 3 gr. 10 exams Science Math English

In addition to the 3 you write in gr. 10, there are 2 more – SS 11 and English 12

What are the Provincials ‘worth’?

The Provincial Exam Marks for Sc. 10, Math 10 and English 10 are worth 20% of your FINAL gradeYou Grade 10 Provincial Exam marks are used to determine Provincial SCHOLARSHIP eligibility (students who earn high marks are eligible for money towards Post Secondary ) The Provincial Exam Mark for SS 11 is 20% of your final mark The Provincial Exam Mark for Eng. 12 is 40% of your final mark

What if I fail a gr. 9 Class? REMEDIAL SUMMER SCHOOL

July 2016 North Delta Sec; 2 hrs. per day (a.m. or p.m. )

Registration info. will be available April 2016 on the SD37 website under Continuing Education

4 academic areas only : Math 9, SS 9, Science 9, English 9

there are NO remedial classes for French 9 (you could try Surrey) OR Core Math 9/Cornerstones 9 – you would have to repeat the 9 level next year

there is NO PE 9 classes – you would have to repeat PE 9 as it is required; other electives do not need to be repeated

Summer School can I ‘jump ahead’?

Yes, however if you take a 6 week full academic gr. 10 course in the summer Please Note:

NO repeats (students will need to upgrade in the summer of gr. 10, not in the school year if they have already passed the class in summer but are not satisfied with the grade)

Cannot be registered here AND at summer school – If your name appears on the summer school list (and you have not discussed your plan with me) in June I will remove it from your course selection and add an alternate

Seaquam cannot guarantee placement in a gr. 11 course – approx. 2 wk. wait before determining if there is space & if it fits with existing timetable CONSULTATION WITH MS. COSTIN SRONGLY ADVISED

Further Considerations for jumping aheadall gr. 10 academic classes (other than SS 10) have Provincial Exams – students have only 6 weeks to cover all material before the mid-Aug. Provincial Exam

having a full year to develop skills in your academic areas is strongly recommended if going on with an academic grade 11 program

taking a gr. 10 class in the summer then not getting that same subject placement until the following year (if gr. 11 classes are full) can lead to possible learning gaps

taking an online class or night school class (2 nights a week, 3 hrs. a night /not always avail.) at the gr. 11 level after the gr. 10 class is done in the summer (if that class is full at SE) is an option but grade 10 students are not given a block ‘off’ in their timetable – they will then carry 9 classes ; support for online courses not available from subject teacher at Seaquam

Language Challenge ExamsIf you can speak and read/write fluently in another language (Mandarin, Korean, German, Spanish, Japanese, Punjabi)

You can take the gr. 11 exam in gr. 10 and the 12 in gr. 11

Application to the School Board happens in November of gr. 10

Exams are written in late Jan, early Feb of gr 10

Second Language credit (4) is given, however some universities (UBC) may NOT accept these marks as one of the 4 top grades they consider in admission averages

IB – how can I apply?IB application happens in early Feb. of your grade 10 year

Students interested in IB will be asked to attend and information meeting in late Dec/early Jan. with their parents

IB is NOT for the faint of heart! It is a strenuous program and students are expected to demonstrate through their gr. 10 year not only academic strength, but the ability to manage a heavy workload while maintaining a balanced lifestyle
