Chowan University is a four-year co-education intuition. It is the second oldest of North Carolina's seven

Baptist Colleges. Chowan opened in 1848 as a four year college for women, Chowan Baptist Female institute.

It was renamed Chowan College in 1910, admitted male students in 1931, and established itself as one of the

leading junior colleges in the South in 1937. In 1992 the college returned to four year status. In April of 2006

Chowan President, Dr. M. Christopher White announced the changing of the institutions name from Chowan

College to Chowan University. The University fulfills its mission with a careful blend of both liberal arts and pro-

fessional courses. Recognizing that such a blend of knowledge and experience is particularly suited to the

needs of contemporary society. Chowan takes as priority the need to connect general education with

specialized education, theoretical learning with practical learning, and intellectual skills with vocational skills.

Set amid 300 acres of woodlands embracing beautiful Lake Vann, Chowan’s main entrance leads gracefully

around a college green to an antebellum mansion known as the McDowell Columns Building. Sixteen major

buildings of contemporary design provide air-conditioned residence, academic and recreational facilities. The

small-town university campus attracts students from at least twenty seven states and several countries each

year. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools fully accredits Chowan University to offer the

bachelor’s degree.

HEAD COACH MELISSA NAKASUJI

Melissa Nakasuji enters her second season as the Head Women's La-crosse Coach. She took over the program in its third year of existence. Dur-ing the 2014-2015 season the Hawks finished with a 4-8 record. Nakasuji produced the DII All-Independant Player of the Year, Mackenzie Reid. Reid, in addition to fellow teammates Sierra Burston and Adriea Herndon, also received DII All-Independent honors. Prior to taking the reins at Chowan, Nakasuji served a two-year coaching stint at Adrian College; first as an assistant coach, and then as head coach. She guided the program to two-straight MIAA regular season and tournament championships (2013, 2014), including a combined 18-0 con-ference record and 29-9 overall record. Adrian secured a berth to the NCAA Tournament in both seasons. In 2014, Nakasuji coached eight All-MIAA players, two All-Region selections and the MIAA Offensive Player of the Year and MIAA Rookie of the Year. Before coaching at Adrian, Nakasuji coached highly successful elite club programs in Ontario, Canada. She also gained valuable coaching experi-ence through an internship at Limestone College under the guidance of head coach, Scott Tucker. Nakasiju competed for Limestone College from 2008-2011. She led the Lady Saints to four consecutive Conference Carolinas Regular Season and Tournament Championships. The squad made NCAA Division II Tourna-ment appearances each of her four years at Limestone and played in the National Championship final her senior year. As a four-year starter for the Lady Saints, she competed in 79 games and compiled 61 ground balls, 24 draw controls and 20 caused turnovers. Dur-ing Nakasuji’s playing career, the Lady Saints collected an impressive 70 wins. In 2011, she was recognized with All-American Honorable Mention honors and was selected to the prestigious IWLCA North-South All-Star Game. She earned All-Conference Carolinas recognition twice (2010, 2011) and earned All-Tournament honors in 2011. Nakasuji graduated from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology in 2012 with a Bachelor of Educations. She also holds a Bachelor of Science from Limestone College and majored in both Physical Education and Strength & Conditioning with a minor in Coaching. The Ajax, Ontario Canada native currently resides in Murfreesboro, N.C.

ASSISTANT COACH

KYLE SMITH

Kyle Smith enters his first season with the Hawks and serves as the Assis-tant Women’s Lacrosse Coach. He noted, "I am so excited to be part of a developing program and am thankful to Coach Nakasuji for bringing me in at such an exciting time". Prior to joining the staff at Chowan, Smith served as the Women’s Lacrosse Coach and Program Director at Otay Ranch High School in California dur-ing the 2014-15 season. While serving in that capacity, Smith was respon-sible for the development and supervision of the varsity and junior varsity programs. Under Smith's direction, the Otay varsity lacrosse team posted a 19-2 overall record and made an appearance in the Division 2 State Semi Finals. The team had four First Team All-Conference recipients and four Second Team All-Conference honorees. That same season, the program enjoyed an 11-game win streak and a Mesa Conference Championship. Smith also gained experience as the Assistant Coach and Vice President of the Black Widow LAX Women’s Lacrosse Club. As part of the organiza-tion, Smith organized practice and tournament schedules, developed prac-tice plans and was an integral part of player recruitment and skill develop-ment and budget management. Additionally, Smith served as an Assistant Coach/Defensive Coordinator for the Olympian High School men’s varsity lacrosse program in 2014. Af-ter the program posted a 4-16 record in their inaugural season, Smith helped guide the team to a 13-7 record the following season including a Semi-Final playoff appearance in the state’s Division 2 playoff. Smith also coached the South Bay Outlaws Boy’s Lacrosse Club for three seasons. Smith has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Western Michigan University and gained Professional Trainer/Nutritional Specialist Certifica-tions from the International Sports Science Association in Carpenteria, Cali-fornia.
