Leadership, teamwork, commitment and hard work: These are just a few of the values that guide teams in their quest for the First National Bowl.

For more than 25 years, First National Bank Alaska has proudly served as ASAA’s Title Sponsor to help support 30,000 high school student-athletes and activity participants statewide.

FFrom higher grades and better attendance, to fewer dropouts and higher graduation rates, the value of sports and activities is clear. Together, we are giving our all for a brighter tomorrow.

On behalf of the Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) and our corporate partners, welcome! Over the next two weekends you’ll see how Alaska’s passion for the pigskin has given rise to a new level of celebration in high school football . In 2003, ASAA and First Nation-al Bank Alaska transformed the state-culminating event into Alaska’s ONLY football bowl . This grand tradition continues through the efforts of a dedicated committee, who have organized local celebrities, special events, and in-depth recognition to heighten the excitement and un-derscore the glory of the game during these championships .

In the spring of 2011 the ASAA Board of Director approved the creation of a new classifications for football . The new football classification are Small Schools, Medium Schools and Large Schools The creation of these new divisions has brought even more excitement to the First Na-tional Bowl Series .

Each champion is awarded the possession of a "Traveling Trophy .” These beautiful trophies have been donated by First National Bank Alaska . Winners of these hard earned trophies take them home for a year before passing it on to the next year’s champions or retaining it for themselves .

During halftime of Large School First National Bowl Semifinal games, you’ll see a sneak preview of the high school football stars of the future.

Four Boys & Girls Clubs teams will demonstrate the new, safer USA Heads Up blocking and tackling fundamentals taught by USA Football trained and Certified coaches.

BGC Football is Anchorage’s premier youth football league for Alaskans grades 3-8 (ages 8 -14). More than a hundred Certified Coaches and dedicated volunteers work with local high schools to prepare young Alaskans for high school, college and even NFL football careers.

So watch closely, you just may see a future All-Conference Linebacker or All-State running back. These kids play hard, they play safe and they dream big!

See the Stars of Tomorrow, Today!

The first football championships were organized by the Cook Inlet Conference who invited teams which they felt deserved a opportunity to com-pete for the Invitational State Championships. These invitational continued until 1990 when ASAA set up a qualifying process for the three conferences (Cook Inlet, Railbelt, and Northern Lights) to send teams to an official Alaska State Tournament.

Then as more smaller schools started football programs, a fourth conference called The Great-land Conference was formed in 1997 with four schools (Nikiski, Seward, Glennallen, and Houston). The top two teams in that conference played each other for an unofficial “Greatland State Championship”. In 2000, there was a re-shuffling of teams into a Large Schools Division and a Small Schools Division. Teams with en-rollments of 850 or less were now classified as “small schools” and a new state championship was held with the winners of the semi-finals of the Northern Lights and the Greatland Conferences.

Presently, there are 31 schools in Alaska with football programs grouped into five conferences based on school size. In 2005, Juneau moved from the Cook Inlet to the Railbelt Conference as the Cook Inlet was adding two new schools (South Anchorage and Eagle River.) Barrow is the most northernmost school to start a football program. They played a non-conference sched-ule in 2006 and then entered the Greatland Con-ference in 2007 as a varsity team.

In 2008, Houston moved from the Greatland to the Northern Lights Conference as their enroll-ment had increased to over 400 students making them a 4A school. And in 2009, Thunder Mountain (Juneau) started football joining the newly formed Southeast Conference along with Sitka and Ketchikan.

In 2008, the small schools expanded playoffs to include quarter-finals. Playoffs for both divisions now

involves quarterfinals with the top four teams in each conference advancing to the semifinals that are hosted by ASAA. Winners advance to the State Championships the next week.

In 2011, the ASAA board approved the creation of one more division, the Medium Schools di-vision, in preparation for the new classification starting in 2012-13 school year.

FIRST and 10 reasons one Alaska bank believes in high school activities

Leadership, teamwork, commitment and hard work: These are just a few of the values that guide teams in their quest for the First National Bowl.

For more than 25 years, First National Bank Alaska has proudly served as ASAA’s Title Sponsor to help support 30,000 high school student-athletes and activity participants statewide.

FFrom higher grades and better attendance, to fewer dropouts and higher graduation rates, the value of sports and activities is clear. Together, we are giving our all for a brighter tomorrow.
