2016 Annual Report
Letter from the Board of Directors
Dear Friend of the Foundation,We are pleased to share with you our annual report calendar which highlights our many efforts in urology research, advocacy and education. Our progress and success today would not be possible without the generosity and passion of our many advocates, supporters and urology partners. Your investment in the Urology Care Foundation helped make a measurable impact on the lives of millions touched by a urologic disease.
This past year, the Foundation expanded and enhanced its communication efforts to raise awareness and educate patients and their loved ones, healthcare professionals and the general public on urologic diseases. UrologyHealth.org has grown to be the nation’s leading authoritative go-to resource, providing more than four million patients and their loved ones with valuable information and decision tools about urologic health. Our increasing collections of resources are medically-reviewed and include the most accurate information on over 110 urologic conditions. These valuable resources help patients and their loved ones navigate their health, providing critically needed information on the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of often life-altering urologic diseases and urologic cancers. The Foundation distributed more than 500,000 patient friendly resources electronically and in print, including expanded distribution of our UrologyHealth extra® quarterly patient magazine to 42 Veterans Centers in 23 states. This magazine is an indispensable resource dedicated to those actively managing their urologic health care and those ready to make direct, positive healthy changes in their lives.
On the state and federal front, the Foundation, in collaboration with the American Urological Association and the Bladder Health Alliance, worked to mobilize support to nationally declare November as National Bladder Health Awareness month. These efforts continue to gain momentum across the country, helping to elevate national awareness about urologic health and diseases.
The Urology Care Foundation research programs also saw unprecedented growth. This calendar year alone, the Foundation committed nearly $2 million to support over 40 early career investigators with research training. The Research Scholar Program—our premier funding opportunity in urologic research—was also expanded in order to maximize the impact of our awards and reach the best and brightest scientists conducting cutting-edge urologic research. As a result, we saw a record-breaking number of applications and a 79% increase over 2015.
We look forward to your continued partnership to ensure the Foundation remains a dedicated leader in the advancement of urologic research and education to improve patients’ lives.
Together, we are ensuring the future of urologic health.
With gratitude,
Richard A. Memo, MD Chair Board of Directors

Research
The Urology Care Foundation is a driving force in the discovery of new treatments because we invest in the next generation of researchers. We do more than fund the best research from talented scientists—we help foster and develop their careers to support a long-lasting commitment to finding breakthroughs in patient care.
Funding cuts and increased competition for federal grants continue to threaten the future of urologic research. Your donation helps fund necessary research and supports talented young scientists during critical phases of their careers. These targeted investments ensure that they receive the resources and training for a successful career in research.
Because of you, the Urology Care Foundation has supported more than 750 scientists with nearly $30 million in research funding dedicated to preventing, diagnosing and treating urologic conditions.

When I was first told I had kidney cancer, I
didn’t hear much else. After the initial shock wore
off, I learned about my treatment options from the
Urology Care Foundation’s education materials,
which encouraged me to learn all I could about
my disease and treatment and talk to my doctor.
Suddenly, I was more optimistic and less
frightened— I knew I could make more informed
decisions about my care.

Donor Spotlight
A Philanthropist Committed to Making a Difference - Kalish Kedia, MD In 2014, Kalish Kedia, MD of Cleveland Urology Associates made a generous gift to the Urology Care Foundation to endow a new research scholar award. To honor the memory of Dr. Kedia and Mrs. Usha Kedia’s son, the award has been named the Indian American Urological Association and Anupam Ted Kedia Research Scholar Award.
The Kedia's commitment will ensure that funds are generated to support the discovery and advancement of urologic research for future generations. This endowment will provide, in perpetuity, support for a two-year award for a scientist engaging in urologic research. We are truly grateful for Dr. and Mrs. Kedia’s dedication to furthering the careers of talented early-career investigators.
The inaugural Indian American Urological Association and Anupam Ted Kedia Award was competitively-selected and awarded to Dr. Vijay Samineni, Washington University, St. Louis, in 2016. Dr. Samineni’s project, titled Optogenetic Dissection of Cell Type-specific Roles in Bladder Pain, is using optogenetics to study sensory neurons associated with bladder pain in order to better understand interstitial cystitis.
Special thanks to the Indian American Urological Association and Dr. Kalish Kedia and Mrs. Usha Kedia for your investment in the future of urologic research and care!
In Memory of Anupam Ted Kedia
“I wanted to make a gift
to an organization that
I felt connected to and that was
conducting promising research and education in the battle against urologic diseases. A
planned gift made sense for my financial
portfolio and created a good return on
investment and tax relief, which allowed
me to make my gift to the Urology Care
Foundation and support a worthy cause.”

32%Education and Outreach
The Urology Care Foundation’s program expenses fall into two major categories: Research and Education and Outreach.
Research grants are awarded to institutions and individuals throughout the United States by the American Urological Association (AUA) Research Department. The AUA Office of Research has a stringent peer-review progress that reflects the highest standards of the National Institutes of Health. Each year, the Foundation grants nearly $2 million in research funding to the AUA Research Department in support of training awards, salary stipends and fellowships to promising investigators. Our awards span the career spectrum of research—medical students, residents, post-doctoral and post-resident fellows and independent investigators.
Education and Outreach expenditures include our efforts to raise awareness of urologic health through national public health campaigns and publications. The Foundation’s online and print materials are based on information from the AUA’s Clinical Guidelines. Our patient-friendly educational tools are designed to promote communication between patients and their health care providers. We also publish UrologyHealth extra®, a quarterly magazine.

Educating patients. IT’S A MATTER OF HEALTH, MONEY, AND PEACE OF MIND.
• Poor urologic health is expensive. Americans spend nearly $40 billion annually treating urological conditions.
• Urological conditions are extremely common. Every 2.3 minutes, a man will be diagnosed with prostate cancer; 33 million Americans live with an overactive bladder.
• Urology is widely misunderstood. Despite affecting millions of women and young people, urology is widely perceived just for aging men.
Funding answers. THE FUTURE OF PATIENTS’ LIVES DEPENDS ON IT.
• Research is responsible for the next cure. Researchers and physician scientists conduct the cutting-edge research necessary to develop new urologic treatments that touch patients’ lives.
• Federal research funding is decreasing. Over the past 15 years, adjusting for inflation, funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), one of the largest contributors to urologic research, has decreased by approximately 20%. Support from private sources, such as the Urology Care Foundation, is more critical than ever.
• Urologists are leaving research. With cuts in federal research funding and the demands of conducting research, talented physician scientists are increasingly lost to careers in private or clinical practice. The Foundation fosters careers in research to keep the best and brightest young physicians focused on finding new treatments and cures.
