A Message from the President

Hello Friends,

Old Sturbridge Village’s 70th anniversary year was an amazing year. We began with a beautiful spring and a gathering of nearly 100 members of the Wells family for a reunion and celebration in June. Summer continued with the return of many favorite events, and Fall was, as always, an amazing time of year from the 9th Annual Overseers’ Gala to The Sleepy Hollow Experience and everything in between. Who could have predicted that 7,500 tickets for an entirely new event would sell out in a matter of weeks more than two months before it even began?

We were thrilled to partner with Serenbe Playhouse to bring the outdoor, theatrical The Sleepy Hollow Experience to the Village. With this year’s success in mind, we are already hard at work planning for next year and exploring other new theatre experiences, as well as improvements to visitor orientation, collections and exhibitions, and program and interpretation.

Leading the Village into the future is our new Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Robert “Bob” Reeder. Bob and his family have been involved with the Village for many years, and we are thrilled to have him leading the Board and the museum. To mark his first year as Chairman, Bob and his wife, Lorraine, issued a challenge–they matched all new and increased gifts to the Annual Fund up to $100,000. You helped us more than meet the challenge. Thank you!

Preserve the Past. Support the Future. The George Washington Wells Society

The George Washington Wells family established Old Sturbridge Village, one of the largest outdoor living history museums in the country. George’s sons bequeathed to OSV their vast collections of artifacts of material culture from early 19th-century New England. These became the foundation for educational programs and year-round exhibits that tell the story of everyday life in a small New England town during the years 1790 to 1830.

Today, the George Washington Wells Society recognizes those individuals who name Old Sturbridge Village as a beneficiary in their estate plans. Friends who inform us of their intention to support Old Sturbridge Village with a bequest or planned gift demonstrate their understanding of the importance of leaving a legacy to preserve history.

A bequest in your will or trust to Old Sturbridge Village may consist of a percentage of your estate, a fixed dollar amount, or specific property. You may name OSV as a beneficiary of your retirement plan or IRA, entitling your estate to a charitable tax deduction. Or, have all or part of your life insurance proceeds paid to OSV. OSV is grateful for bequests of any size, which together help ensure that this living museum will be here for future generations.

The Cornerstone Circle

The Cornerstone Circle Old Sturbridge Village’s Cornerstone Circle recognizes those individuals who gave $2,500 or more this year.

The word “cornerstone” indicates the first set of stones in a masonry foundation. All other stones are set in reference to this stone, determining the stability and position of the structure to come. Our Cornerstone Circle recognizes donors whose generosity has a profound impact on our mission to preserve Old Sturbridge Village for future generations.

Cornerstone Society donors receive a complimentary annual Membership, which includes all member benefits, and are invited to the annual Federalist Dinner as well as a special Cornerstone Society Dinner.
