Transition Offers New Found Independence for Mitchell

Mitchell Martin lived at home with his mom for 54 years. Although he is an individual with a developmental disability, he became his mom’s primary care taker as she grew older and became ill.

Unfortunately, Mitchell lost his mom a little more than a year ago. While losing a parent is hard for anyone, it was especially tough for Mitchell. Living at home and taking care of his mom had been all he knew for many years. However, he has made a remarkable transition from living at home and being a caretaker and son to becoming more independent and living in a home with his peers. “Moving to live in one of the Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara’s group residential sites

has allowed Mitchell to open up and spread his wings,” said Dena Stoneham, Mitchell’s Medicaid Service Coordinator. “He is now truly receiving the support he needs to become as independent as possible.”

Mitchell’s new neighborhood has many places that he can walk to. He especially likes to visit the local 7-Eleven convenient store and church. With his newfound independence, he is quickly discovering what it is that he likes to do and takes every opportunity to do those things – like cooking, a love that he inherited from his mom! Mitchell has realized that he likes to cook. He can be found often helping to prepare meals for his housemates. He’s even thinking about attending a cooking and nutrition workshop offered by the Cornell Cooperative Extension at a nearby church. Mitchell says, “I love my new house, especially the staff and my roommates. They are really nice and they take good care of me!”

Currently, Mitchell works at the Day Services building of Opportunities Un-limited of Niagara in the Environmental Services department where he

performs janitorial work. In his spare time, participates in a weekly bowling league and in Gliding Stars, an adaptive ice skating program that provides

individuals with disabilities the opportunity to increase their personal potential through development of ice skating skills with his niece, Holly. He is also a

die-hard Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres fan and follows them every chance he can.

His niece, Holly Martin, says of Mitchell’s recent move, “I could not be any happier with the transition process into my uncle’s new home and program. Not only has he adjusted remarkably well to the sudden changes, but he has also flourished in many ways thanks to the supports he is receiving. He has discovered a new found happiness with his independence and involvement in work and other programs. The loss of my grandmother was quick and unexpected. The rest of the family and I are beyond grateful for the guidance and swift planning from the Opportunities Unlimited staff that made his move possible.”
