1 2016 Annual Report

From the Executive Director

Dear Friend of Family Promise:

Our first full year of operation has been one of hard work, gratifying service, and unexpected events. I am honored to be part of Family Promise of Southern Chester County and to work with each one of you to alleviate homelessness in Southern Chester County.

We are very proud to report that Family Promise served 16 families in 2016 with 55 family members, including 36 children who were experiencing homelessness right here in our community. These families went from being hopeless to believing in their futures.

14 of these families are in stable jobs and remain in sustainable housing. We continue to work with them in our Family Support Program to ensure they remain sustainable. I applaud each one of our families for their determination and hard work to make positive changes in their lives.

But, the climb out of homelessness is very difficult. Wages remain low, rents are high, and affordable housing in Southern Chester County is getting harder and harder to find. Families with children make up 40% of the people nationwide who experience homelessness and they are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. There is still lots of work to do.

Lastly, we have learned to count on the unexpected. Last June, we received notice that the facility we occupied was for sale. We are extremely grateful for being able to move into a wonderful old home on Baltimore Pike in Kennett Square that has given us stability for the next 10 years. Our thanks to William P. (Bill) McGovern for helping us make this happen.

All of you have remained committed to providing the resources we need to operate Family Promise of Southern Chester County, and for that, we sincerely thank you. We have worked very hard to be good stewards of the resources you gave us and look forward to continuing our partnership.

We, at Family Promise, believe that every child deserves a home. There is nothing like seeing the face of a child going into their new bedroom for the first time or a mom who never thought that she and her family would have a place to call home again.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and the families we serve, my heartfelt thanks to all of you. It is only with your support that we can make a positive impact on homelessness. Let’s all continue our work together in 2017 to alleviate family homelessness in Southern Chester County.

Susan Minarchi Executive Director

Network of Congregations

Family Promise is built on a unique model, utilizing the resources of congregational partners in our community

to feed and provide overnight accommodations for families until they find permanent housing. Our

volunteers are the heart of the organization, making

the program extremely cost effective. Family Promise is not a traditional shelter. In fact, it is estimated to be 70% less than the cost of establishing and operating a permanent shelter. Here

in Southern Chester County, we are proud to have over 650 dedicated volunteers

and 27 caring congregations in our network.

Comprehensive Case Management

Family Promise is a program that gives a hand up and

empowers families to regain self-sufficiency.

Comprehensive, intensive case management is

provided to connect with the services they need and successfully move families into stable employment

and long-term housing. Our structured Family Support

Program ensures that families remain sustainable

after they leave our program.

OUR MISSION The mission of Family Promise of Southern Chester County is to help children and their families experiencing homelessness achieve sustainable housing and stability by providing shelter, meals, and comprehensive support services through a network of congregations and volunteers.

Part of a National Organization

Family Promise of Southern Chester County is part of

a leading national nonprofit organization addressing the

problem of family homelessness. With over

200 Affiliates, Family Promise has served more

than 700,000 people nationally, the majority children, since being

founded in 1986. Families are in our program an

average of 60 days. Our affiliate operates as a separate non-profit

organization, so we can focus on addressing the

needs of our local community.

“Family Promise provided me with tutoring to get my GED, and they helped me develop a resume and a budget. Before I came to the program, my son and I were staying in a friend’s car.” ~ Single Mom with 1 child

Our Volunteers Say... “When I heard about Family Promise helping families in our community, my husband and I couldn’t wait to help. We find it an extremely rewarding experience, and it brings joy to our hearts when we meet the families and play with the children. To see them happy and forget their troubles even for a little while, is an investment of our time and money that is well worth it!” ~ Congregation Volunteer
