From the PastorDear Members and Friends,

In one of his parables, Jesus taught that the kingdom of God contains treasures that are both new and old (Matthew 13:52). That theme is very evident as Narberth Presbyterian Church celebrates its 125th anniversary. What a treasure our church has been!

We praise God for his faithfulness in the past, and the great cloud of witnesses who have gone before us. Now in 2016, inspired by God’s people in the past, and cheered on by their example, we continue to run the race with perseverance, keeping our eyes on Jesus. Jesus

is the head of the church, the Savior of the world, and will always be both the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:1,2).

It was my privilege to come to NPC as your new pastor back in 1991, just a few weeks after the 100th anniversary celebration. I watched all the sermons of former pastors which had been video taped, and I got a wonderful sense of where we had been in the past, and where he was leading us in the future. I beam with gratitude to God and deep appreciation for our people when I see NPC’s consistent story as a Christ-centered, Biblically based, and loving community. The light of Christ continues to shine brightly from the corner of Windsor and Grayling Avenues.

The famous philosopher Yogi Berra once said: “The future ain’t what it used to be.” Stated positively, we thank God for his faithfulness in the past – and by his grace and for his glory – the best is yet to be! And all the people of God said: “Amen!”

Faithfully and expectantly yours in Christ,

Pastor Steve

The exterior of Narberth Presbyterian Church today would be recognizable to some-

one who last visited here fifty years ago. Its last cornerstone is dated 1956, the year in

which the last major expansion of the building took place. Similarly, a person attending

NPC for the first time since its centennial year would learn that Reverend Stephen

Newkirk Weed, installed as senior pastor in October 1991, still serves in that position.

During the church’s first century, eleven people served in that position.

The interior of our church has been reconfigured and

repurposed numerous times in the last quarter-

century. Doors have been added, removed, and

redone; walls have been torn down, designed, and

decorated. Church staff have been hired, served,

and retired but some are still working. Pastor

Steve and other leaders have dedicated their lives

to overseeing and ministering to church members and the NPC community. Every

year, new people unite with our church or begin to attend—and, as in families, there

are changes due to life events such as births, moves, and death. Many people here

twenty-five years ago are still part of this church body.

One thing that has not changed at NPC is our

commitment to worshipping the Triune God: Father,

Son, and Holy Spirit. Our church is Christ-centered

and biblically-based; our mission statement is:

“We build disciples in the love of Jesus Christ.”

Since the early 1990s, Pastor Steve has preached

and taught about, “Growing up, growing together,

and growing out.” This is a central theme of worship, music, messages, fun, and

fellowship.

As the Holy Spirit leads, we experience what it is

like to be a committed Christian community where

people can experience the love, grace, and healing

of the Lord. Then, as people who love Jesus Christ,

we share the Good News of the gospel in many

ways with each other, locally, in our nation, and with

the world.

We have experienced the constancy of this truth throughout the last 125 years: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb. 13:8, NIV).

Our church body can be sure that He will safely lead us at all times.
