2016

was brimming with challenge and surprise. Filling the news were stories of water crises, shootings, terror at home and abroad, five years of the Syrian war with its resulting humanitarian crisis, an opening in relations with the U.S. and Cuba, a battle over the rights of persons who are transgender, and an election cycle that left minorities and those on the margins feeling attacked and vulnerable.

In the midst of the swirling of world events, the Alliance of Baptists reaffirmed our calling to be a theological home for open-minded and open-hearted Baptists. We recommitted to accompanying and empowering our ministry partners as together we give witness to God’s justice and love globally and locally.

Bearing Courage: Rooted in Hope—the theme of our 2016 annual gathering—accurately portrays the individuals and congregations who were called to form the Alliance nearly 30

years ago. Their stories—our story— are now told in Reimagining

Zion: A History of the Alliance of Baptists. Our story is a story of hope for ALL who are wounded and ignored by the church, the poor and oppressed—the world God so loves.

We have good work ahead of us. 2017 will be another year of challenge and we look forward to this work and are grateful to do this work in partnership with you. Brazil. Paula Dempsey, director of partnership relations visited with the Alianca do Brasil for their XX annual meeting.

Reimagining Zion. Andrew Gardner’s celebrated work of the history of the Alliance of Baptists was published!

Partner Seminary Visits. We celebrated Alliance Day at Brite Divinity, Wake Forest School of Divinity, McAfee School of Theology and the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. There are gifted ministers emerging from seminaries around the country!

Church Visits. The Alliance staff visited over 50 churches in the last year!

Spirituality Gathering. In September we gathered at Camp Weed, Live Oak, Fla., and considered the intersection between faith and mental health. We enjoyed fellowship, the art of He Qi and our speaker Kate Moorehead.

Faith Formation Consultations. Ken Meyers, faith formation specialist visited with over 15 churches and partners offering insight into faith formation development for all ages.

Summer Communities of Service. Another wonderful summer with XX volunteers serving at XX sites around the country.

Annual Gathering: Bearing Courage: Rooted in Hope. Our meeting at Kirkwood Baptist Church in St. Louis provided space to celebrate all that women have brought to the Alliance and the work ahead of us. We heard from preachers Traci Blackmon, Phyllis Trible and Kyndall Rothaus. We approved statements on #BlackLivesMatter, the global refugee crisis, the expansion of Medicaid and the Cuba embargo.
