The Four-Way Test of the Things We Think, Say or Do

Is it the TRUTH?

Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

*The OBJECT OF ROTARY is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to

encourage and foster:

FIRST The development of acquaintance as an

opportunity for service;

SECOND High ethical standards in business

and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as

an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and

community life;

FOURTH The advancement of international

understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of

service.

The District Directory is not for distribution to non-Rotarians nor may it be used as a commercial mailing

list or for other commercial uses.

ROTARY AT A GLANCE Rotary brings together a global network of volunteers who dedicate their time and talent to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members from more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work impacts lives at both the local and international levels, from helping families in need in their own communities to working toward a polio-free world. Rotary also offers expanded service opportunities including:

• Interact: a service organization organized and sponsored by Rotary clubs for young adults aged 12-18. There are more than 12,300 Interact clubs in 133 countries.

• Rotaract: groups organized by Rotary clubs to promote leadership, professional develop-ment, and service among young adults aged 18-30. There are more than 8,000 Rotaract clubs in 167 countries.

• Rotary Community Corps (RCCs): groups of non-Rotary members who work to improve their communities. There are more than 7,500 RCCs in 80 countries, all orga-nized and sponsored by Rotary clubs.

Membership Snapshot

Who: Rotary brings together the kind of people who step forward to take on impor-tant issues for local communities worldwide. Rotary members hail from a range of profes-sional backgrounds; doctors, artists, small busi-ness owners and executives all call themselves Rotarians. Rotary connects these unique perspec-tives, and helps leverage its members’ expertise to improve lives everywhere.

Where: From Haiti and Greenland to Nigeria and Singapore, Rotary unites a truly diverse set of leaders from across the world. Currently, the largest number of clubs comes from the United States, India, Japan and Brazil. The fast-

est growing Rotary regions include Southeast Asia and Africa.

What: Rotarians contribute their time, energy and passion to sustainable, long-term projects in local communities across the globe. Projects focus on important issues like peace and conflict resolution, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, maternal and child health, basic education and literacy and economic and community development.

Polio Eradication

Rotary is close to eliminating the second human disease in history after small pox, with a 99.9 percent reduction in polio cases worldwide since 1985, when Rotary launched its PolioPlus program. In 1988, Rotary spearheaded the creation of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Polio eradication remains Rotary’s top priority. To date, Rotary has contributed more than US$1.5 billion and countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than two billion children against polio in 122 countries. Currently, Rotary is working to raise $35 million per year through 2018 for polio eradication, which will be matched 2 to 1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

ROTARY AND POLIO FACT SHEETPolioPoliomyelitis (polio) is a paralyzing and potentially fatal disease that still threatens children in some parts of the world. The poliovirus invades the nervous system and can cause total paralysis in a matter of hours. It can strike at any age but mainly affects children under five. Polio is incurable, but completely vaccine-preventable.

PolioPlusIn 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus program, the first initiative to tackle global polio eradication through the mass vaccination of children. Rotary has contributed more than $1.5 billion and countless volunteer hours to immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. In addition, Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $9 billion to the effort.

Global Polio Eradication InitiativeThe Global Polio Eradication Initiative, formed in 1988, is a public-private partnership that includes Rotary, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and governments of the world. Rotary’s focus is advocacy, fundraising, volunteer recruitment and awareness-building.

Polio TodayToday, there are only two countries that have never stopped transmission of the wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Less than 370 polio cases were confirmed worldwide in 2014, which is a reduction of more than 99.9 percent since the 1980s, when the world saw about 1,000 cases per day.

ChallengesThe polio cases represented by the remaining one percent are the most difficult to prevent, due

Page 7: 2016 – 2017 - Microsoft · 1 Rotary at a Glance 2 Rotary and Polio Fact Sheet 4 Paul Harris Founder of Rotary 6 General Offices of Rotary International 7 RI President John F. Germ

5

to factors including geographical isolation, poor public infrastructure, armed conflict and cultural barriers. Until polio is eradicated, all countries remain at risk of outbreaks.

Ensuring SuccessEvery dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-to-one by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation up to $35 million a year through 2018. These funds help to provide much-needed operational support, medical personnel, laboratory equipment, and educational materials for health workers and parents. Governments, corporations and private individuals all play a crucial role in funding.

Rotary in ActionMore than one million Rotary members have donated their time and personal resources to end polio. Every year, hundreds of Rotary members work side-by-side with health workers to vaccinate children in polio-affected countries. Rotarians work with UNICEF and other partners to prepare and distribute mass communication tools to reach people in areas isolated by conflict, geography, or poverty. Rotary members also recruit fellow volunteers, assist with transporting the vaccine, and provide other logistical support.

‘This Close’ CampaignRotary has a growing roster of public figures and celebrities participating in its “This Close” public awareness campaign, including Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; actresses Kristen Bell and Archie Panjabi; WWE superstar John Cena; supermodel Isabeli Fontana; Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu; action movie star Jackie Chan; boxing great Manny Pacquiao; pop star Psy; golf legend Jack Nicklaus; conservationist Jane Goodall; premier violinist Itzhak Perlman; Grammy Award winners A.R. Rahman; Angelique Kidjo and Ziggy Marley; and peace advocate Queen Noor of Jordan. These ambassadors help educate the public about polio through public service announcements, social media and public appearances.

PAUL HARRISFOUNDER OF ROTARY

Paul Harris, the founder of Rotary, was born in Racine, Wisconsin, USA, on April 19, 1868, but moved at the age of 3 to Wallingford, Vermont, to be raised by his grandparents. In the forward to his autobiography, My Road to Rotary, he credits the

friendliness and tolerance he found in Vermont as his inspiration for the creation of Rotary.

Trained as a lawyer, Paul gave himself five years after his graduation from law school in 1891 to see as much of the world as possible before settling down and hanging out his shingle. During that time, he traveled widely, supporting himself with a great variety of jobs. He worked as a reporter in San Francisco, a teacher at a business college in Los Angeles, a cowboy in Colorado, a desk clerk in Jacksonville, Florida, a tender of cattle on a freighter to England, and as a traveling salesman for a granite company, covering both the U.S. and Europe.

Remaining true to his five-year plan, he settled in Chicago in 1896, and it was there on the evening of February 23, 1905, that he met with three friends to discuss his idea for a businessmen’s club. This is commonly regarded as the first Rotary club meeting. Over the next five years, the movement spread as Rotary clubs were formed in other U.S. cities. When the National Association of Rotary Clubs held its first convention in 1910, Paul was elected president.

After his term, and as the organization’s only presidentemeritus, Paul continued to travel extensively, promoting the spread of Rotary both in the USA and abroad. A prolific writer, Paul wrote several books about the early days of the organization and the role he was privileged to play in it. These include The Founder of Rotary, This Rotarian Age, and My Road to Rotary. He died in Chicago on January 27, 1947.

District Governor Russell Bertrand and his wife Karen met Rotary International President John Germ and his wife Judy at the Rotary International Convention in Montreal Canada in June 2010 and at the Zone Institute in September 2015. The two couples were reacquainted again at the International Assembly in San Diego, California in January of 2016.The International Assembly brings all 534 District Governors Elect from around the world for training, networking and fellowship. It is also an opportunity to meet and hear past and future Rotary International leaders.President John Germ’s focus for the Rotary year 2016-2017 is eradicating polio, membership, opportunities and the Rotary Foundation. The president believes we have all been given an opportunity. It came in the form of a Rotarian saying, “I’d like to invite you to a meeting of my Rotary Club.” It may have seemed like a small opportunity at the time. But for whatever reasons, for each of us, it also seemed like a good idea: an interesting chance to meet some good people, do some good work, and have some fun along the way.

President John Germ encourages all of us to follow the Rotary International 2016-2017 Theme “Rotary Serving Humanity.”District 7950 is excited to have Rotary International President John Germ and his wife, Judy, attend our Multi-District Conference April 28-30, 2017 in Providence, RI. Please join us as we celebrate our year and enjoy President John and Judy’s visit.

FIRST LADY’S CHARITYRONALD MCDONALD HOUSE,

PROVIDENCE

I am very passionate about the Ronald McDonald House in Providence, RI and thought District 7950 could collaborate with them.

I had first-hand experience with the Ronald McDonald House Family Room at Hasbro Children’s Hospital. My granddaughter had surgery when she was ten days old. Our family spent plenty of time in the family room.

The family room was equipped with comfortable chairs, computer with internet access, snacks, and fresh coffee.

In April 2016 I was invited for a tour of the Ronald McDonald House. I heard a lot of stories but the one that touch my heart the most was about a family from California. The mother said her 9-year old child was unable to receive the proper treatment in California and was referred to Hasbro Children’s Hospital on the east coast in Rhode Island! They did not have family here or the means to stay in a hotel for (6) months.

This family was introduced to the Ronald McDonald House. The mother and occasional family members stayed at the Ronald McDonald House for six months. She was comfortable, safe and felt like home. The child also got better and was scheduled to go back home in a week.

Page 20: 2016 – 2017 - Microsoft · 1 Rotary at a Glance 2 Rotary and Polio Fact Sheet 4 Paul Harris Founder of Rotary 6 General Offices of Rotary International 7 RI President John F. Germ

18

There were all phases of construction going on. They now have (28) bedrooms each with a private bath, fully stocked kitchen, laundry, courtyard with playground, and day room.

All rooms are beautifully furnished with donated furniture and televisions.

A hot dinner is prepared every evening by volunteers. The majority of the food is donated. Food expense for the Ronald McDonald House is only $3,000 per year! Food from the pantry is also available anytime of the day.

Guests are asked to pay $10 per day; however no family will be turned away if they do not have the ability to pay.

The Ronald McDonald House is a Non-Profit organization that relies on donations and fundraising. The organization must raise over $1,000,000 each year. McDonald’s related sources contribute 10-15% of this funding.

There are several fundraising opportunities available. The fundraising activities I would like our district to participate in are:

Donation Box – I will provide a cardboard house for each club to deposit cash.

Wish List – I will also leave a wish list. This wish list will also be available on the District 7950 website.

Both the donation box and any items from the wish list can be brought to the House of Friendship at the Multi District Conference in April 2017. You may also contact me to arrange for a pick up. I am hoping for a pyramid of houses and a truckload of items from the Wish List.

Any questions on this charity you may contact me at [email protected] or check out the website at www.rmhprovidence.org.

Thank you for your anticipated support of this project.

DUES AND FEES

Club membership lists should be “cleaned up” prior to the middle of June and December, especially relating to former members that have not been removed from the Rotary International membership list. You will have to pay international dues for them regardless of their status with your club.

Rotary International Dues for 2016-2017 will be about $56.00 per member, plus fees for the Rotarian magazine. The exact amount your club will owe will be on the Club Invoice dated July 2016 and January 2017.

Rotary District 7950 Dues for 2016-2017 are $40.00 per member. You will receive an invoice in the mail from the district treasurer, Bruce Marquis. District dues are payable only once per year.

Any questions on the dues you may contact District 7950 Treasurer, Bruce Marquis, at (508) 245-3483 or [email protected].

DOCTOR PERCY HODGSONMEMORIAL AWARD

The late Dr. Percy Hodgson was a member of the Pawtucket Rotary Club who served as Governor of District 198 (one of our predecessors) in 1939-1940. He later went on to the position of Rotary International Director and, in 1949-1950, to President of Rotary International.

A resolution was passed at the 1989 District Conference to establish the annual “Dr. Percy Hodgson Award,” in memory of his leadership, assistance and service above self. The honor is bestowed by an Award Panel of seven members, including the District Governor, which selects a Rotarian (not a Past District Governor) who has contributed exceptional service to his or her Club or to the District during the preceding years.

THE COUNCILSThere are four Councils in District 7950, organized geographically. The councils operate independently of District 7950. Each club may appoint a delegate and one or more alternates as representatives at scheduled meetings.

Contact the Council Chair for time and place of meeting location. All Rotarians may attend and participate in Council meetings. Each Council meeting counts as a make-up for a missed Club meeting. A Council Coordinator serves as an advisor to the Councils.

The purpose of the Councils is:• Networking within a geographical area;• Inter-Club fellowship activities;• Joint service projects, cooperation as desired• To provide a forum for discussion and

HOW TO QUALIFY

To qualify for the Presidential Citation, clubs must complete two mandatory activities and additional activities in several categories. Most activities will be verified automatically throughRI's data. But some will be verified only by the information you enter in Rotary Club Central.

To more accurately capture your club's will have the entire Rotary year - from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017 - to achieve the Presidential Citation goals.

District governors will be able to track the progress of all of their clubs online, and I'm asking them to follow up with you regularly and support you in achieving these goals.

DISTRICT CITATION

I will also offer a special citation to districts that:

Have at least 51 percent of clubs earn the Presidential Citation

Contribute at least 20 percent of their District Designated Fund to PolioPlus

Increase Annual Fund giving by 5 percent over last year's total

Achieve a 3 percent increase in membership

Thank you in advance for your efforts this year to show Rotary Serving Humanity.

Hosted by Rotarians Dave Clifton and Rona Mann, Service Matters features guests who make time in their busy lives to give “ser-vice above self” locally, regionally, and globally. Interested in giving back, paying it forward, or meeting folks who do? You’ll enjoy listening to Service Matters each Friday 3-4PM, on 790 Business.

Underwritten by Navigant Credit Union, helping businesses like yours grow for 100 years, and looking forward to the next 100.
