Season Features Powerful Personalities, Real-life and Legendary The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance (DPAA) is ready to electrify Southwest Ohio with the 2016–2017 Excite Season for Dayton Ballet, Dayton Opera and Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. The new season was announced on New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2015, to over 2,000 patrons at the Schuster Center in Dayton, Ohio and to the region at large.

The three DPAA Artistic Directors, Thomas Bankston, Dayton Opera; Karen Russo Burke, Dayton Ballet; and Neal Gittleman, Dayton Philharmonic, as well as DPAA President and CEO Paul Helfrich, were on stage to make the announcement.

Subscriber Ticket Packages for all eight DPAA Excite Season traditional series are on sale now. All four Signature Events (Vive la France!, Dracula: Bloodlines, New Year’s Eve: American Vistas, Carmen) and the Special Event, Handel’s Messiah, may be purchased only by DPAA series subscribers until the single ticket on-sale date scheduled for June 1, 2016. These five events may be ordered as Wildcard add-ons for the Masterworks Nine and Family Four packages but not as part of Create Your Own or FlexPass packages.

THE SEASON OPENS WITH A TRIBUTE TO THE CLASSICAL ARTS HERITAGE OF FRANCE

The excitement kicks off on September 17, 2016 at the Schuster Center with a powerful Season Opening Spectacular entitled Vive la France! All three art forms—Dayton Opera, Dayton Ballet, and Dayton Philharmonic, along with DPAA’s combined choral forces—come together to present a kaleidoscopic view of the French classical arts, all in one unforgettable evening! Opera and ballet take primacy in the first half of the program with excerpts from works by masters such as Camille Saint-Saëns and his grand opera Samson and Delilah, which includes dance accompanying the famous Bacchanale scene. Also included will be orchestral works, many paired with dance, from composers Gounod, Berlioz, Debussy, Offenbach and Ravel. The program will close with songs from the hit musical Les Misérables. This is a Signature Event and is part of the Dayton Opera Series season subscription ticket package. Signature Events are those programs that include significant roles for all three art forms: Ballet, Opera and Orchestra.

Throughout the season, eight traditional DPAA series provide experiences that present the classical arts with an eye toward discovery, insight, and drama.

Dracula: Bloodlines, a DPAA Signature Event

Ruggero Leoncavallo’s tragedy I Pagliacci, a classic opera touchstone beloved around the world. The opera artfully reveals, in a show within a show, how absurdity and heartbreak play out side-by-side in life. Masterpieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are woven throughout the 2016–2017 DPAA season, including the Opera season. Mozart’s buoyant The Abduction from the Seraglio comes to the stage in March. With echoes of the master’s The Magic Flute, it promises to be a real crowd-pleaser. In May, the Dayton Philharmonic and the full complement of Dayton Ballet dancers join the Opera for a big, splashy Signature Event: Georges Bizet’s beloved and brilliant masterpiece, Carmen. The Opera Series is available as a four-performance package. Carmen is also part of the Masterworks Nine.

DAYTON BALLETA WORLD PREMIERE OF GOTHIC PROPORTIONS, AN ALL-TIME FAMILY FAVORITE, AND TWO DIVERSE REPERTORY SHOWS

Dayton Ballet Artistic Director Karen Russo Burke transports the audience to fog-shrouded Transylvania and expands the vista from there. The resulting World Premiere, Dracula: Bloodlines, is truly a fantastical, groundbreaking experience. This DPAA Signature Event—performed in October at the historic Victoria Theatre—expands Bram Stoker’s original spine-chilling tale to completely new dimensions with specially commissioned music by Austin K. Jaquith, composer for concert and film. It includes operatic vocals, the DPO in the orchestra pit, completely new stagecraft and costumes by designer Ray Zupp, and, of course, awe-inspiring dance, newly choreographed by Karen Russo Burke. It is a must-see.

Tchaikovsky’s beloved The Nutcracker gets better every year and returns for ten dates in December. For 2017, Dayton Ballet presents two exciting repertory shows. The first, in the romantic month of February, called Daring Duets, comprises multiple works that explore the range of intimate emotions between two people in a way that only dance can express.

The second, The Female Factor, shines a bright light on the limitless ingenuity and talent of some of the most highly regarded female choreographers of our era, such as Jessica Lang and Suzanne Payne. The Ballet Series is available as a four-performance package.

Dayton Philharmonic Artistic Director and Conductor Neal Gittleman always seeks thematic threads that serve to weave a season together at a profound aesthetic level.

For starters, the Premier Health Masterworks Series places Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at the center of the 2016–2017 musical universe as we celebrate his vast impact on our musical heritage. Fittingly, his Symphony No. 1 (composed when he was eight) opens the first program and his Requiem closes the last program. Along the way, arts patrons will enjoy Mozart’s delightful Violin Concerto No. 3, performed by the poetic, imaginative Yevgeny Kutik, the brilliant and universally loved “Jupiter” Symphony No. 41, and the Oboe Concerto, persuasively articulated by our own Eileen Whalen. When reflecting on the miracle that is Mozart, one naturally thinks about musical prodigies, so we have brought three together for the May concert featuring works by Mozart and Mendelssohn. Twelve-year-old prodigy Gavin George, pianist, performs Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Mendelssohn himself made his public debut as pianist at age nine! Neal has selected Mei-Ann Chen to conduct the program. “Stunning, just stunning…” Dallas Morning News enthuses over this dynamic young conductor. On the topic of brilliant prodigies, 16-year-old wunderkind pianist Anastasia Risikov performs Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme from Paganini on the opening Masterworks program. Dayton music fans are sure to fall under her mesmerizing spell.

Along with Mozart, the procession of larger-than-life figures continues when Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade spins her exotic musical tales, Sergei Prokofiev breathes musical life into Sergei Eisenstein’s cinematic masterpiece Alexander Nevsky, and the glowing inner soul of nature is revealed via Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons with DPO’s Concertmaster Jessica Hung in the lead role. Gustav Mahler is the creative titan who took the symphonic form a giant step into the twentieth century. His Symphony No. 5 is a remarkable turning point for orchestral music and stands tall as one of the highlights of the season. The avatar of French musical Impressionism, Claude Debussy, is represented by his work Images, which paints luminous pictures of England, Spain and France in glorious orchestral sound.

Fantasy and whimsy are the hallmarks of Dayton Ballet's production of The Nutcracker.

Innovation also plays an important role in the classical season when Maestro Gittleman presents selections from Michael Gandolfi’s The Garden of Cosmic Speculation and an excerpt from Jennifer Higdon’s orchestral work City Scape, entitled river sings a song to trees. The Masterworks Series is available as either a nine- or six-concert series. The Masterworks Nine includes a Wildcard that may be used for any event. For those who enjoy their classics along with entertaining context, Neal Gittleman hosts and conducts the popular Demirjian Classical Connections Series. For two decades, Neal has built this concept into a central tradition of the Dayton arts scene. This season he takes an in-depth look at the music of Gandolfi and his Cosmic Garden, the pairing of Prokofiev’s music and Eisenstein’s movie, Debussy’s Impressionism, and finally, a whole new take on Mozart’s Requiem, featuring the music of contemporary composers Sleeping Giant. Each concert comes complete with a Q&A with Maestro Gittleman and a free scoop of Graeter’s ice cream in the Wintergarden following the performance. The Classical Connections Series is available as a four-performance package.

DAYTON PHILHARMONIC CHAMBERMUSIC TO DELIGHT THE NEWCOMER AND AFICIONADO ALIKE

The Philharmonic’s star players continue to fill the DAI Renaissance Auditorium with glorious music for the Sunday afternoon Chamber Series. “Girl power” is the watchword for the opening program, String Quartet Gems, when the all-female DPO Principal String Quartet takes the stage in November. Next, the stellar talents of DPO Concertmaster Jessica Hung and her accomplished colleagues are on display for the January concert, Concertmaster’s Choice. Dayton Opera Artists-in-Residence are accompanied by musicians from the DPO in Sound and Song, and the DPO Brass and Percussion Players take over for the series finale under the baton of Patrick Reynolds for Fantastic Brass. This series has rapidly become the region’s go-to experience for chamber music, sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, but always exceptional. The Dayton Performing Arts Alliance is dedicated to a range of education initiatives. The DP&L Foundation Family Series is the most public of its many strategies to bring the mystery and majesty of classical music, dance and song to the youthful mind. The annual PhilharMonster Halloween concert touches the imagination with entertaining stories and music that help build an awareness of the performing arts world. The series also includes a Sunday matinee of The Nutcracker, plus a highly creative show starring visiting artists Platypus Theatre Company entitled Presto, Mambo! and performed with the Dayton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (DPYO) under the baton of DPYO Conductor Patrick Reynolds. A Wildcard is provided with this package so that the family may select a fourth event from the entire season list. The Family Series is available as a four-performance package.

Singer Steve Lippia, in a glittering SuperPops opening program honoring the 100th Birthday of Frank Sinatra, takes his musical cues from the songbook of the world’s greatest popular singer, along with selections from Frank’s legendary inner circle for the program Sinatra and Friends. For Hometown Holiday, the DPO assembles a Holiday Festival Choir made up from the finest church singers in the region. Accomplished local guest artists such as Moment’s Notice also add to the festivities.

Forget the Grammys! It’s the Oscar-winning movie music and lyrics that we carry in our hearts. Vocalists Marie Danvers, Teri Hansen and Sean McLaughlin join the Orchestra for Lights, Camera… the Oscars! There’s a rising star in the entertainment firmament who is stealing the mantle of “heartthrob” from the Bublés and Grobans of the world. His name is Mark Masri, and he’ll be bringing his romantic program Once Upon a Love Song to the Schuster Center in spring. If you think Star Wars fever will cool by next year, think again. The SuperPops season closes with Women of Song, bringing a trio of top-notch singers to perform the hits of Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Etta James, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and more! The SuperPops Series is available as a six-concert package on either Friday or Saturday nights.

DAYTON PHILHARMONIC ROCKIN’ ORCHESTRA THE MUSICAL CROSSROADS WHERE ROCK MEETS ORCHESTRA

The Dayton Freight Rockin’ Orchestra Series will spark and rekindle appreciation for favorites from the wide world of rock ’n roll. For the opening concert in October, the Dayton Philharmonic welcomes Michael Cavanaugh with his tribute to the Piano Man, Billy Joel. You already know Michael from the Broadway musical Movin’ On, for which he was handpicked by Billy Joel to play and sing Mr. Joel’s hit songs! November brings Landslide: The Music of Fleetwood Mac. These are the same musicians who brought the house down for the popular Legends of Classic Rock program this past season. Dayton favorites Jeans ’n Classics return for Soulful featuring Gavin Hope, an evening filled with soul classics made famous by Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes and many others. Guest rock ensemble Windborne brings a polished new show to the Rockin’ Orchestra Series: The Music of Whitney Houston, which features the versatile and beautiful vocalist Rashidra Scott in the lead role. The Music of Queen rocks into the Schuster Center to close the Rockin’ Orchestra season. The Rockin’ Orchestra Series is available as a five-concert package.

Subscribing to a series offers a sizable savings over single-ticket prices. Subscriptions for Dayton Ballet are $76 to $288 and for Dayton Opera are $132 to $321. DPO Masterworks 9 (which includes Carmen with full orchestra and a Wildcard ticket to any performance in the Excite Season) is $108 to $450, and Masterworks 6 is $77 to $321. Rockin’ Orchestra is $128 to $350, SuperPops $145 to $393, Classical Connections $56 to $138, and Chamber and Family Series (the latter of which includes a matinee performance of The Nutcracker) are $80 each.
